OCTOBER 2012 FLY LINES

Reeling Stoner

Greetings Fellow Anglers...

Greetings!

All this rain and wind has sure made a mess of things. Hope you all survived with little or no damage. The photos of the Kenai River in the Cooper Landing area are unbelievable! I went out and took photos of our local creeks and thought they looked like rivers! I'm hoping to do a little more fishing if the weather would cooperate. Remember the AFF buddy list if you're still aching to go and want someone to go fishing with.

We had a successful Kenai River Clean Up event last month before all the rain washed the trash away this year. As in the past few years, the amount of trash we collect has decreased, which I take to mean that anglers and campers are becoming more environmentally aware and not "trashing" the place. The food was good, the music entertaining, the fire warm, the fishing so-so. Thanks to all who participated in cleaning up the river and road, thanks to our generous donors for facilities, food and raffle prizes, and especially thanks to those who worked the event to make sure everything ran smoothly.

Join us Monday night, October 1st, at the fish hatchery for a special monthly meeting when we get tours of the new facility. Then we're back at the Millennium hotel for the November 5th meeting.

Hope you still find the time to get out there and fish before the lakes and rivers freeze!

October Program - Tour of New Fish Hatchery

Andrea Tesch- October Speaker

Our October Meeting on October 1st WILL NOT BE HELD AT THE MILLENNIUM! Repeat - will NOT be held at the Millennium Hotel!

Rob Riopelle, our Vice President and Program Chair, has made arrangements for the club to visit and tour the new State of the Art William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery near Elmendorf AFB on Reeve Avenue.

We will meet in the Second Floor Conference Room. Please arrive early because the tour will start at 7:00 PM sharp and will be limited to the first 60 people who arrive. Andrea Tesch from ADF&G will be our host.  We will split into groups of 20 for the tour and it will take approximately 1 hour. When entering the controlled fish tank area, everyone will have to wear Alaska Fish and Game special sanitized knee-high boots.

SPECIAL NOTES:

NO SMALL BOOTS. The hatchery doesn't have boots in small sizes so please do not bring children under the age of 16. Individuals who wear small sizes might want to bring extra socks for the large boots.

PLEASE DO NOT WEAR ANY ACTUAL FISHING APPAREL INTO THE HATCHERY. They are very concerned about introduction of contaminates into the system.

Come join us for this interesting and informative meeting and see the new system in operation!

FISH TALK by Bill Hauser
Felt and Foes

Hauser book front

Earlier this year, I was asked to present a seminar about the fish in the Susitna River. Luckily, I soon discovered a large collection of research reports from the early 1980's to help me learn more the system. Before long, I discovered the great importance of slough (pronounced "slew" and sometimes called "off-channel") habitat for fish, especially chum and sockeye salmon.

So what is a slough and why are sloughs are important? And what are the other habitats?
