PRESIDENT'S PEN:

AFF's 2011 Annual Meeting and the Holiday Season....

Greetings!

 Mark Huber

At the November 2011 annual meeting, we elected Officers and Directors for the coming year. AFF also made history in electing our first female president. It has only taken the club 40 years, but we got there! Please congratulate and thank the following individuals who were elected:

Jennifer Caldwell   President           Mike Harsh      Director

Rob Riopelle         Vice President   Steve Lambert  Director

Mark Huber          Treasure            Jan Schnorr      Director

Jolynne Howard    Secretary           Bob Wallick     Director

Art Peck              Ghillie

Mark Huber          Past President

You will see that not only did I move to the position of Past President, but also was elected as Treasure. As Jennifer was willing to serve as President if we could fill the Treasure position, I volunteered to serve as Treasure until another qualified candidate could be found. Please contact me if you have computerized book keeping experience and would be interested in serving the club as its Treasurer.

While we welcome the new Officers and Directors, we also owe a big THANK YOU to two out going directors. Pat Speranza joined the Board two year ago and served as Vice President. Pat has been responsible for arranging meeting speakers since joining the Board. Pat has also helps out at the merchandise table and with many AFF events. Keven Kleweno has served on the Board for many years. I always sought out Keven for his thoughtful insight as when issues came before the AFF Board. Keven also organized the AFF Annual Auction for the last two years. Additionally, Keven runs the fly of the month drawings at our meetings, helps out in a big way to organize the Kenai River Clean Up, cooks burgers and dogs at the picnic and judges the science fair. You get the picture; Pat and Keven will be missed at our Board meetings.

During the meeting, I also gave a special recognition fellow board member and Secretary, Jolynne Howard. Jolynne works extremely hard to keep AFF running in top shape. From maintaining the memberships, keeping minutes at Board meetings, to publishing the newsletter, Jolynne is a tremendous recourse. You can always find Jolynne at organizing meetings and events doing whatever needs to be done to have the event a success. The next time you see Jolynne, be sure and tell her how much we appreciate everything she does for AFF.

Our December 5, 2011 we will have our monthly meeting at 7 pm at the Millennium Hotel. This is our annual Christmas gift exchange meeting. Bring a gift valued at $25 or less to receive a gift from under the Christmas tree. AFF elves will add a few gifts with a little more value to add additional excitement to the gift exchange. There will also be a couple of short presentations. Jennifer Caldwell will update us on her year guiding George Cook and a second presentation from our friends at Project Healing Waters.

Best wishes for the holiday season!

Mark

FISH TALK

by Bill Hauser

Salmon Spawning Habitat

Some years back, I flew to Homer to help with some field work on a fish habitat project. Our work task was to set up monitoring equipment to evaluate the depth of groundwater and whether it might freeze during winter. The goal of the project was to create or re-establish spawning habitat for chum salmon.

This work site was located in an old streambed on the south side of the Kenai Peninsula at the head of the West Arm Port Dick Bay, which opens to the Gulf of Alaska. The stream, Port Dick Creek, did, at one time, sustain a run of chum salmon, but some years prior, a small landslide filled the streambed with gravel and we suspected that the water still flowed below the surface.

All salmon and trout require moving, well oxygenated freshwater for spawning and successful hatching of eggs. The water supply must be continuous and the eggs cannot freeze. But each of the five species of North American Pacific salmon prefer to spawn in different parts of a drainage and each has different requirements for successful rearing of the juvenile life stage.  Click here to read the rest of Fish Talk.
