Dear Friend of Liberty,
The Nigeria camp came full of surprises. But the best came in the dynamic package of Mr. Adedayo Thomas. Dayo, as he is casually known, is an acquaintance I made through Atlas Network. I suggested to our Nigeria camp local partner, Adedeji Akintayo, that he contact Dayo as a possible source for students, teachers or donations. Adedayo is the publisher and Director of Outreach of AfricanLiberty.org. This cooperative venture with the Ghanaian think tank IMANI and with Atlas strives to bring African voices for liberty to the wider world and to work with African media to disseminate policy ideas for a new century of peace, freedom, and prosperity. His complete resume is impressive, but what is startling is that his educational background is theater. After the usual beginning-of-camp logistics and settling in, what I've come to expect as typical soon became anything but. Dayo was scheduled to open with a lecture on classical liberal philosophy. Though this lecture is a camp staple, it was never delivered in this way --- Loud. Theatrical. African-centric! Over the six years that I've been organizing Liberty Camps, largely in central Europe, our historical context has always been European. In fact, what I know about African history and educational tradition wouldn't fill a tea cup. But it was amazing to have a topic I know so well taught through different examples, different metaphors, and different events (such as colonialism). I'm sure I learned as much as our students did. And Dayo fully utilizes his theater background to break barriers and engage his audience. He was definitely a tough act to follow. Although this camp was a bit shorter than usual, our students left energized and eager to spread the philosophy of freedom throughout Nigeria -- thanks, in large part, to our new friend Dayo.
Launching a camp in a new country and culture is always a challenge. To leverage our efforts, we've forged a new alliance with AfricanLiberty.org and its student group African Liberty Students' Organization (ALSO) to promote the ideas of liberty across Africa. As we prepare for our camps next year, the Language of Liberty Institute's name will be in good company and under good stewardship with Dayo. Yours in liberty, Glenn Glenn Cripe, Executive Director

My Experience at the LLI Conference
Olumayowa Okediran
It is difficult to look back at Language of Liberty Institute's Liberty and Entrepreneurship Conference and not entertain the possibility of a 'replay' of events. So much has already been said about the organizers, much more about the activities that took place during those few days at Badagry.
My experience at the conference was not my first with the philosophy of liberty - which is rather uncommon in this part of the world. However, it provided me with an opportunity to broaden my understanding of liberty.
The methods of delivery were an excellent combination of fun and learning especially with Adedayo Thomas's approach - using African history to explain the tenets of classical liberal thought. This was very useful to me. It helped to reconcile my prior knowledge of African history with possible solutions to the political and economic problems facing the continent.
Ross Kenyon's introduction to Austrian Economics, though brief, provided me with a different way at looking at life, in particular our discussion of Bastiat's essay on the seen and the unseen.
Astrid's sessions were loaded with practical experiences as an entrepreneur; the videos also did assist in explaining the challenges faced by entrepreneurs around the world and their importance to innovation and the economic engine.
It was wonderful having Glenn Cripe speak on several subject areas from Rand's origin of rights and proper role of government, to Bastiat's "Candlemaker's Petition"; the clarity of his explanations were convincing and realistic.
I left the conference with renewed energy to contribute to the promotion of classical liberal thought on campus via the African Liberty Students' Organization (ALSO), as I am also grateful to AfricanLiberty.org for sponsoring me to four days of wonderful experiences.
Olumayowa Okediran is Vice President (Strategy), African Liberty Students' Organization, University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria and Delegate at the maiden Language of Liberty Institute's Liberty and Entrepreneurship Conference in Badagry, Lagos, Nigeria.

Summer Liberty Odyssey by Astrid Campos Summer is the height of camp season for LLI, and this summer is no exception. The Slovakia camp kicks it off June 26 - July 2 from the lovely hamlet of Vrútky. Located at the confluence of the Váh and the Turiec rivers and near the Malá Fatra mountain range, Vrútky has remained a small town despite its location on an important railway line. Biking and hiking are favorite summer recreational activities and you can anticipate warm weather. Our reliable and experienced local partner for this camp, for the fifth year, is Radovan Ďurana and his Institute of Economic and Social Studies (INESS). Then it is on to our new camp in Albania August 21 - 27. Sisters Fjoralba and Jonida, alumnae of our Poland camp last fall, have selected a lovely venue on the shores of Lake Ohrid in Pogradec. One of the premier tourist resorts of Albania, Pogradec has an excellent climate, extraordinary scenery, and ample opportunities for recreation. This beautiful location will be an excellent backdrop for a vibrant camp experience. This summer also marks the much anticipated return of the ISIL World Conference August 29 - September 2. Its location on the beautiful Aeolian island of Vulcano will challenge our focus on the world-class lineup of intellectual heavy-hitters and exciting, provocative thinkers of all ages and reputations -- Antonio Martino, Tom Palmer, Mary Ruwart, Ken Schoolland, Mark Pennington, Nicola Ianello, Josie Appleton, Valérie Hartwich, and Detlev Schlichter.
ISIL will push the boundaries, explore radical scenarios, and explode ideas into your life. After the intense sessions, take in the magical beauty of Vulcano, Lipari, and Stromboli, which the Ancients believed hid the forge of the gods. The other bookend to our Liberty Odyssey is our fourth annual visit to Poland September 4 - 10. This year the Polish Liberty Camp will be located in Tąpadła, a tiny agricultural village situated in the rolling hills between Wrocław and the Czech border. This area is rich with history from the Bohemian empire to the Mongol invasion. This is also the warm belt of Poland, so we anticipate balmy temperatures and generous hospitality, as well as another dynamic and friendly group of students and staff. Once again, we partner with Paweł Toboła-Pertkiewicz and his Polish-American Foundation for Economic and Social Studies (PAFERE). If you feel like " chasing liberty" and want your next vacation to make a difference, consider joining us as a voluntourist. Share your life experience with young people eager to learn about freedom. You can elect to give a lecture, lead a discussion, or just interact with the group casually. The fee of $1500.00 covers your week stay at camp, and helps sponsor camp activities and subsidize students. Knowledge is the best gift we can give to the future. We hope you'll join us or consider donating any sum if you cannot.
ODYSSEY PACKAGE $2200.00 You may have noticed that we've strategically arranged camps on either side of the ISIL World Conference. We want you to take advantage of this scheduling with the 2 week Odyssey Package. Either the Albania Camp plus the World Conference, or the World Conference plus the Poland Camp. The price includes conference fees plus your lodging and meals at the conference. Ready to go on your own personal odyssey? Click here to get started.

Seeds for Change
by Roman Goerss
In the modern age, we're rapidly growing used to investments we can monitor at all times. Websites provide us the value of our stocks 24/7, we know how our sports teams are doing before they even finish their games and virtually any information we may need can be found instantly on Wikipedia, Amazon or Google. We live in the now, we want it now. Right now.
But change doesn't always happen that way. Real, positive, sustainable change is often slow. We must take the long view.
I'm reminded of the fable of Johnny Appleseed, based on a real man, in which he wandered the land planting seeds for both his own future and the prosperity of his children. Contrary to the legend, his seed scattering was far from random. Indeed, he sought specific locations that would favor his crop and planted whole orchards, and returned every year or two to monitor their progress and cultivate his investment.
At the Language of Liberty Institute, we aspire to be Johnny Appleseeds for freedom. We go to countries that yearn for freedom and sow the ideas and principles that will grow into new Edens. This type of investment also takes time to mature, but that is precisely why we must move now, to ensure that future generations can harvest the fruit of liberty.
The seeds we plant at our camps grow in the minds of people who create new think tanks, become policy advisors to governments, become rights advocates and political activists, become the next generation of business leaders, civic leaders and political leaders.
Like gold, go long on Liberty. It is just as precious, and an investment worth making.

LLI Here and There

April 15, Glenn went to see the new movie of Atlas Shrugged in downtown Tempe, which he really enjoyed. Astrid worked the Tea Party Tax Day event on the Phoenix Capitol lawn for Campaign for Liberty.
Glenn and Astrid attended the Atlas Experience April 27 & 28 in Dallas, hosted by Atlas Economic Research Foundation. Our agenda was packed, with International attendees to meet and panels on the "Arab Spring" and the freedom movement in Latin America. We're still digesting it all. But it was exciting to meet people from Egypt, Morocco, Peru, Ecuador, Tibet, Mozambique, Argentina, and Venezuela. Don't be surprised if you see us launch camps in these countries very soon!

Why Support the Language of Liberty Institute?
We all receive multiple solicitations to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Compassion fatigue is real and common (and understandable). Yet there are two good reasons why supporting the Language of Liberty Institute makes sense.
1) Ideas are the most important gift you can give to people in nations not blessed with our traditions of liberty, free enterprise and rule of law.
Especially when traveling, many of us are moved with pity at the conditions in which other human beings live. Yet billions of dollars of foreign aid have proved that money alone provides little, if any, permanent relief. Even medical care, while relieving instances of personal misery, leaves unchanged the poverty and oppression in which so many live.
By giving young people in developing countries the intellectual tools to develop free and prosperous societies, we are providing them with the keys to profoundly change their future.
2) Your dollar given to LLI goes a long, long way. This is an extremely frugal organization, historically volunteer-driven by individuals happy to make personal sacrifices for the cause they love. Moreover, the entire budget of LLI is still small enough that a contribution which would be nearly insignificant elsewhere can make a big difference.
$1000 can help us send a teacher to a distant camp; $100 can help a student attend; even a $20 donation helps us ship books overseas that students will treasure their whole lives.
Spreading liberty. Huge bang for your buck. That's smart giving.
Please consider Donating Now. Summer is our prime camp season, so you can ensure maximum exposure of the message of freedom to eager young people.
You can donate securely via credit card and e-check at the Language of Liberty Institute's website. You can also mail checks to us at 7801 N. 44th Dr. #1010, Glendale, AZ 85301 USA.
We are a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, for the benefit of Americans wishing to deduct their contributions.
Thank you again for your support, and stay tuned for more news from the Language of Liberty Institute!
