PRCI recently expanded and accelerated its comprehensive research and development program aimed at enhancing current in-line inspection (ILI) tools and developing the next generation of technology to ensure pipeline safety, integrity, and reliability. The PRCI ILI Research Program is directly aligned with the ongoing initiatives of both the natural gas and hazardous liquids pipeline industries to achieve the goal of zero pipeline incidents. This objective relies heavily on the performance of ILI tools and technologies. While the current ILI technologies provide high resolution data that forms the backbone of most integrity management programs, additional enhancements will be a key aspect for achieving the zero incident target, including improvements to sensors and sensor delivery platforms and data processing methods and techniques to better understand the signals/data being collected. PRCI Continues to Advance R&D Roadmap, Sponsors Third R&D Summit

As communicated in prior editions of Throughput, PRCI has been leading the industry in an effort to unify and promote convergence of the pipeliRoadmapne integrity R&D agenda. Consistent with our initiative and commitment, PRCI sponsored its third (and final) R&D Summit in support of its Collaborative Pipeline Integrity R&D Roadmap on May 14, 2012. The R&D Summit was held in Barcelona, Spain in conjunction with PRCI's Spring 2012 Pipeline Technical Committee Meetings. The summit was scheduled to provide the opportunity for inputs and perspective from European pipeline operators that did not have the opportunity to attend and participate in the two prior R&D Summits that were held in North American venues, including the first summit in December 2011 (Houston, TX) and the second summit in February 2012 (Phoenix, AZ). (read full story)

Welcoming New Members to PRCI

PRCI is pleased to announce that Kinder Morgan and Energy Transfer are now Pipeline Operating Members of PRCI. Also new to PRCI in 2012 is Mears Group, Inc. who joined as a Technical Program Associate Member in the Corrosion Technical Committee.

Kinder Morgan As of Summer 2012, Kinder Morgan has assumed El Paso's membership in PRCI. Kinder Morgan is the largest midstream and the fourth largest energy company (based on combined enterprise value) in North America. They own an interest in or operate approximately 75,000 miles of pipelines and 180 terminals. Their pipelines transport natural gas, refined petroleum products, crude oil, carbon dioxide (CO2) and more. Kinder Morgan also stores or handles a variety of products and materials at their terminals such as gasoline, jet fuel, ethanol, coal, petroleum coke and steel. We would like to welcome

Vice President - Operations & Engineering - Natural Gas Pipelines, Dwayne Burton, who will represent Kinder Morgan on the Board of Directors.

Energy Transfer As a result of the recent acquisition of Panhandle Energy, Energy Transfer has assumed Panhandle's membership in PRCI. Energy Transfer owns and operates a diversified portfolio of energy assets. Their operations include the gathering, treating, processing, marketing and transportation of natural gas and natural gas liquids. In 2013, Energy Transfer will declare nearly 19,000 miles consisting of Panhandle Energy, Transwestern, Tiger, and Fayetteville Express. Transwestern will maintain a separate membership through the end of 2012 and then it will be included under Energy Transfer. The current Chairman of the Board, Eric Amundsen, Vice President of Technical Services for Energy Transfer, will represent them on the Board of Directors.

Mears Mears Group, Inc. is a provider of Integrity Solutions that include Engineering, Field Testing, Construction and Pipeline Inspection services. Mears provides Direct Assessment, In-Line Inspection, and Corrosion Control Engineering and Testing services, including remediation activities consisting of pipeline repair, pipeline recoating, anodeflex design and installation, and AC mitigation and operates a NACE-certified Training Facility. We would like to welcome Sr. Vice President, Alan Eastman, who will serve as the Voting Representative for Mears on the PRCI Corrosion Technical Committee.

New Compressor & Pump Station Technical Committee Chair
Whelan & Couch
Mike Whelan, PRCI's Director of Research Operations and Bill Couch

PRCI would like to welcome Curt Pedersen of TransCanada as the new Chair of the Compressor and Pump Station Technical Committee. Mr. Pedersen replaced William (Bill) Couch of El Paso. At its recent Technical Committee Meeting in June 2012, PRCI and the Committee honored Mr. Couch for his years of service to the organization.

New Design, Materials & Construction Technical Committee Chair

Tom Zimmerman (middle) with DMC Vice Chairs Arti Bhatia and Rick Gailing

David Horsley of BP has recently been elected as Chair of the Design, Materials & Construction Technical Committee. Mr. Horsley has been serving as acting Chair subsequent to the resignation of former Chair Tom Zimmerman, triggered by added corporate responsibilities. Mr. Horsley will continue as acting-Chair until the September Board Meeting at which time he will be formally installed as Chair and begin his three year term. PRCI recognized Mr. Zimmerman for his service to PRCI at its recent Research Exchange Meeting in February 2012.

New Director of Pipeline Programs

Mark PiazzaIn July 2012, Mark Piazza has been promoted to the position of Director of Pipeline Programs. He has earned this promotion through his leadership role in developing the industry's pipeline integrity roadmap, his implementation of non-traditional, high-impact research initiatives, and his stewardship of complex programs involving extensive member interaction. In this position, Mark assumes responsibility for the execution of the PRCI Pipeline R&D program, and will have the current pipeline staff of Max Toch, Hans Deeb and Carrie Greaney reporting directly to him.  This will enhance our ability to provide a more integrated planning and execution approach to pipeline integrity R&D management, and facilitate coordination across the Technical Committees.

We have initiated a search for candidates to fill the now open position of Program Manager, Pipeline Operations & Integrity, which will also report to Mark and have responsibility for the O&I Technical Committee.

Please join us in congratulating Mark in his new role, as we work to successfully deliver key technologies and information that continue to improve pipeline system integrity and reliability.
