Pipeline Industry R&D Summit Led by PRCI
In support of the current initiatives and high level of interest in the pipeline community on research and development (R&D) programs, PRCI hosted an R&D Summit in Houston, Texas on December 7 & 8, 2011. The R&D Summit was organized to establish consensus and unified agreement of the top priorities for pipeline R&D and developing a process by which the top priorities can be addressed in a more efficient and more collaborative manner by the industry stakeholders. The R&D Summit provided the forum needed to solicit input from industry experts with a diverse range of needs and interests, develop a framework to achieve better collaboration to meet the needs of the industry, and focus energy and resources on activities that have the greatest impact and benefit. Another objective of the R&D Summit was to bring together and align two separate initiatives of the liquids pipeline industry, AOPL/API Pipeline Safety Improvement Areas (or PSIAs) and INGAA Integrity Management Continuous Improvement (or IMCI), each of which has identified pipeline research as a core component to further improving pipeline safety and achieving the ultimate goal of zero incidents. The R&D Summit was an initial step to developing the pipeline industry R&D Roadmap, which is part of PRCI's Strategic Plan. ( read full story) |

Pipeline & Gas Journal Article Highlights PRCI Research on Cathodic Protection Criteria
The December 2011 edition of Pipeline & Gas Journal included an article on Cathodic Protection criteria that is based on research completed by PRCI's Corrosion Technical Committee. The article, titled "Review of CP criteria in Five Standards," was authored by Dr. Fengmei (Frank) Song and Dr. Hsu Yu of Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) and was based on the research completed by SwRI for PRCI Project EC-3-5, Variable CP Criteria. The topic of CP criteria and the use of the -850mV "On" criterion has been a topic of substantial discussion within PRCI and NACE, which is continuing to work on revisions to NACE Standard Practice (SP) 0169-2007 (Control of External Corrosion on Underground or Submerged Metallic Piping Systems). The article addresses the issue of multiple global/international CP criteria and selection of which is most appropriate for a given set of operational and environmental conditions. The full article can be accessed here. Please contact Mark Piazza, PRCI Program Manager with any questions regarding Project EC-3-5. |

Welcoming New Members to PRCI
PRCI is pleased to announce that Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. has joined PRCI in 2012 as a full Associate Member. Also joining PRCI in 2012 is CNPC Tubular Goods Research Institute, as a Technical Program Associate Member in the three Pipeline Program Technical Committees: Corrosion; Design, Materials & Construction; and Operations & Integrity.

Baoshan Iron & Steel, a subsidiary controlled by Baosteel Group, was established by Baosteel Group as the sole sponsor in February 2000. Mining, smelting and processing of ferrous metallurgy, iron & steel trade, metallurgical engineering technology service are the main business of Baosteel. Baosteel mainly produces the strategic products including automotive sheets, electric steel, stainless steel, special steel, steel tubes and pipes, and maintains the dominance in domestic flat and tubular product market. Since starting production in September 1985, Baosteel always regards steel as the core business, pursues the target of ranking among the top 3 in global steel industry in terms of comprehensive competitiveness, keeps growing stronger and larger, and develops itself into the most modernized super-large premium steel production base with the most state-of-the-art process technologies and the most complete varieties and specifications in China. The steel output of Baosteel ranked No. 3 in the world in 2010. We would like to welcome Zhang Jinwei, who will be representing Baosteel on the PRCI Board of Directors.
CNPC Tubular Goods Research Institute (TGRC) is located in the southern suburb of Xi'an,China, an ancient city in northwest China. Founded in 1981 and affiliated to China National Petroleum Corporation, TGRC is Chinese only institution specializing in scientific research and technical services in regard to oil tubular goods engineering. The main business of TGRC includes scientific research on Oil Country Tubular Goods (including transmitting pipeline, refining Pipeline, tubing, casing ,etc.), quality and technological supervision and engineering technological services. The basic research projects of TGRC involve such areas as oil well pipe and string mechanics, line pipe and high performance pipe line steel, integrity assessment of pipeline, corrosion and prevention of oil tubular goods and so on. We would like to welcome Luo Jinheng, Ji Lingkang, and Bai Zhenquan, who will be representing CNPC TGRI on the Pipeline Technical Committees.
