Nutrition News

Good nutrition is vital to brain health.  This includes eating an adequate number of fruits and vegetables as well as drinking 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water daily.  Protect your brain and your body by filling it with good foods.

If you're having trouble getting in all the servings of fruits and vegetables each day, check out this link for fruits and veggies in capsule or gummy form.  They are considered a food, not a nutritional supplement.

ReportCards Report Cards Are Coming Boy at Desk
If you or your child are currently taking classes, report cards should be coming soon.  When they arrive if they are less than wanted, you need to ask yourself if tutoring or brain training is needed.  If it's subject specific due to missing school or concepts then we can help find a tutor, but if  it's overall struggling or something that is long term, then brain training is most likely the solution.

RollTongue

Can You Roll Your Tongue?

You can't "teach" yourself to roll your tongue into the shape of a tube.  Either you're born with the ability to do it or you're not!  Certain things about your body (like tongue rolling and eye color) are written in the code of your DNA. You get what you were born with. No upgrades or tweaking allowed.

Thank goodness your brain isn't one of those things!

Brain Training Principle #1:

Thanks to something called "neuroplasticity," intelligence and brain skills are NEVER set in stone. They can ALWAYS be upgraded.

Years ago, brain science was a mystery. Today, we understand so much more about the amazing organic computer between our ears. For instance, today we know that:

  • Our brains have the lifelong ability to reorganize, reroute and strengthen neural pathways (and even create brand new ones!)
  • These neural pathways collect and process information, make up the IQ, and determine how well we learn and perform in every area of our lives.
  • Because the brain can always adapt (and even create) neural pathways, our mental abilities (and even IQ!) are never "set in stone"-they can always be upgraded and improved!

The scientific word for all this is "neuroplasticity," which refers to the brain's ability to adapt and create. What it means in practical terms is very simple:

Anyone can have the benefits of a faster, smarter brain.  When people truly grasp the significance of neuroplasticity and what it can mean for them personally, the results can be dramatic.

Daniel Kish, for example, has been blind since the age of 13 months as a result of a retinal tumor. Remarkably, Daniel is able to use sound to "see" his surroundings, much like a bat does. By clicking his tongue, Daniel sends echoes to his brain, which then creates a "picture" for Daniel of his surroundings. What amazes scientists is how Daniel's brain has rewired itself to use sound to activate the visual cortex! Daniel's brain does this so effectively that, he rides his bicycle through a busy park, navigating flawlessly around people and trees.

Over the next few days, I'll continue to introduce you to folks who have reinvented their lives as a result of the brain's neuroplasticity.

The brain is a dynamic organ with an amazing lifelong ability to adapt, change and grow. What does neuroplasticity mean for you and those you love? Maybe you can't change the color of your eyes or teach yourself to roll your tongue into the shape of tube, but you can have a faster, smarter brain!
