 | Sacred Harp Singing | We are starting a new Sacred Harp Singing, a form of shapenote singing, in Nelson. Sacred Harp is an older form of choral singing which originated in New England in the 18th century and is enjoying a resurgence among those interested in folk forms, sacred music and/or just the sheer joy of singing with a group. It is not "performance" music and it is sung as a group, unaccompanied by any instrument. More information and examples may be found at the website www.fasola.org or on YouTube (look for sacred harp).
The first sing will take place on Sunday, October 14, from 2 pm to 4:30 pm at Nelson Congregational Church. NO experience is necessary. If you think this sounds interesting, we'd love to have you come listen and give it a try, hopefully this will become a monthly event. We will have several extra books to lend for the session. If you've sung shape-note songs in the past and are ready for more singing close to home, we're eager to meet you and have you join us, too. If you have any questions, please email Eric.

 | Library Book Discussion Group | At 10:30 am on October 15th in the Olivia Rodham Memorial Library, we will be discussing "The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature, and Fowl Obsession" by Mark Obmascik
About the novel: Every January 1, a quirky crowd storms out across North America for a spectacularly competitive event called a Big Year-a grand, expensive, and occasionally vicious 365-day marathon of birdwatching. For three men in particular, 1998 would become a grueling battle for a new North American birding record.
Copies of this book is available at the library. We hope you will join us in this monthly reading group. For more information, simply call the library at 847-3214.

 | Welcome Julia Lennon! | NEW DEPUTY TOWN CLERK/TAX COLLECTOR Teri Upton Please join me in welcoming Julia Lennon as the new Deputy Town Clerk/Tax Collector. Julia comes to the job with a strong background not only in business, but also in human relations. She is upbeat, happy and competent, and as clerk I am very happy to welcome her to our office. I look forward to working with her and I hope she will choose to run for my position in March. Many of you already know Julia as clerk to the planning and zoning boards, and as an active member of the Trails Committee, an offshoot of Moving in Step. At least for the immediate future, Edith Notman, Deputy Town Clerk/Tax Collector for more than ten years, has graciously agreed to continue to provide necessary coverage in my absence, though she wasn't interested in running for the position in March. As you may know, the hiring process began this past July when I posted the position of deputy town clerk/tax collector on the town website, sent the information to Candyce Fulford for the Moving in Step newsletter, and posted the position on the town bulletin boards. In that posting, I indicated that I would choose and present a candidate to the selectmen in early September. Per RSA 41:18, "a deputy shall be appointed by the town clerk with the approval of the selectmen." Before meeting with the selectmen, I met with Julia to discuss the position and explain what I would be proposing to the board, and we discussed the requirements of the position. I did meet with the selectmen on September 5, 2012 at 6 p.m., presented my choice, and received their approval. Julia Lennon was hired as deputy town clerk/tax collector at that meeting. On September 26, 2012, at the selectman's meeting, Maureen Lord presented a print-out of a page from Julia's Face Book account showing that Julia had posted my appointment of her to the position on her website shortly after 2 p.m. on September 5, hours before the selectmen met to confirm her application for employment. It was an innocent expression of pleasure in anticipation of her new position. There has been no ill intent, nor was there any collusion or any other malfeasance on the part of anyone associated with your town office. Teri Upton Town Clerk/Tax Collector |
 | 'Seconds' from the 'Minutes' | Here are some snippets, or 'seconds', from a recent Select Board meeting. To read the Minutes of the entire meeting, you may do so by following this link.
David Voymas came before the Board to present names of two people, Judi Lang and Jacqueline Roland, to fill vacancies on the Agricultural Commission. Jacqueline is sixteen and therefore will not have voting privileges. David Voymas indicated that he discussed this matter with an attorney at the LGC and was informed that her attendance could still be considered when needed to meet the criteria for a quorum. Judi's term will expire in 2013 and Jacqueline's term will expire in 2014. Congratulations to these outstanding citizens!
The Select Board reported that the State does not intend to paint the stripes on the newly paved Nelson Road. There are no funds available for these projects throughout the State.
The position of Traffic Study Coordinator was created upon a motion by David Upton. Their duties would be to Coordinate and facilitate the Traffic Studies in accordance with RSA 265 section 63 between those requesting the study and the Nelson Police Department, assemble and analyze data, report and make recommendations to the Board of Selectmen. The term of the appointment would be one year to run from one Town Meeting to the next. Barry and Karen Tolman were invited to fulfill this position. They have accepted the challenge.
The Minutes of each of our town offices are available on the Town of Nelson website, and all are an interesting read. Need the link? Click here.
