Greetings!
What a refreshing week we've had! The rains have been most welcomed by gardeners, allergy suffers, and firefighters alike, I'm sure. Hooray!
This weekend is another busy one. We begin on Friday evening with a free movie at the Chapel By The Lake, and then gear up for a Vernal pool exploration on Saturday morning and the 5th Annual Nelson School Auction in the afternoon and evening.
See you there!

 | "How Violins Are Made ~ a presentation" | Don't forget! "How Violins are Made: A Marriage of Art and Science", a presentation with Hunt Smith will be held at the The Olivia Rodham Memorial Library this evening at 6:30 pm. The method of making violins was largely complete before the end of the eighteenth century, and while there have been developments as a result of the machine and computer ages, the violin may well be one of the only direct links to the time of the Renaissance. Come spend some time with Hunt as he demonstrates the concepts, philosophies and tools used in this ancient art. Read more >>

 | "Dolphin Tale" Movie Night | You are invited to attend Movie Night at the Chapel By The Lake, beginning at 7:00 pm on Friday, April 27th. Everyone is welcome! "Dolphin Tale" was inspired by the true story of Winter, a bottlenose dolphin that was rescued in December 2005 off the Florida coast and taken in by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Winter lost her tail after becoming entangled with a rope attached to a crab trap and was fitted with a prosthetic one. Refreshments will be offered.

 | News from Nelson School ~ AUCTION!!!
| It's Nelson School Auction Week! We are all so excited. For weeks we have been looking at all of the fantastic things which have been donated. We've looked longingly at all of the items that were donated specifically for our first ever Children's Auction. In our classrooms we've been learning about auctions ~ how they are run and how we should bid on the items we want to win! Of course we are learning new Math skills as we practice our best Auction behavior.
The 5th Annual Nelson School LIVE Auction will be on Saturday, April 28, beginning at 6:00 pm at the Nelson Town Hall. The Children's Auction will begin at 5:30 pm sharp, and move along very quickly, with many laughs and giggles.
Nelson's own Chris Wallenstein, auctioneer, will again emcee the event, donating his time and expertise to help the students of Nelson School.
So many different and exciting items are being offered this year! We hope you will take the time to preview all of the items and make note of your favorites on Saturday from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm at the Nelson Town Hall!
The students and the staff of Nelson Elementary School invite you to attend this year's event. We also thank the many residents of Nelson who have donated so many items to ensure that the 5th Annual PTO Nelson School LIVE Auction is a mighty success!
There will be even MORE auction items on display the day of the auction! See you there!

 | Town Offices Seek Temporary Quarters
| The Town of Nelson is looking for a new "home' where town business can take place as usual during the Town Buildings Renovation. Before renovations can begin, the town needs either a set of rooms, or a small cottage, where the Town Clerk and Tax Collector can do business, the Selectmen can hold meetings and gatherings, the town office employees can work every day, AND somewhere 'official' that the residents of Munsonville and Nelson can still go for their necessary dealings with the town. During the past few Selectmen's meetings, (read the minutes here), suggestions were discussed including renting space in Harrisville, using the small building on the hill just across from the Town Office owned by Wally Francis, Mobile office units, and the Nelson School. One recurring theme was how to make the temporary quarters handicapped accessible. It was noted that the board must act very soon to get a location for the Town Offices as there is a lot of work to do just to get ready for the renovations. And the burden could be made easier if there were someone in town with a building or a set of rooms that might be rented for the duration. Are you such a person? Do you know of someone who has space to rent that might be made handicapped accessible rather easily? If you have any thought or ideas, please contact Maury Collins, Selectman, either via email or by calling him at 847-0047 (Town Offices, or call 847-3321 at home. |
 | "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" a Big Success | Karen Tolman When Judi Lang and I compared notes after our first "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" had been served and eaten, we were pleased to hear that it was a very successful evening. There were four host homes and 33 participants. None of the "guests" had ever sat at the tables around which they had gathered for dinner. Many had never been in their host's home. And, there were people who had never met each other before. Everybody reported that they had either met someone new or gotten to know someone better.
The hosts had been given the number of guests and the amount of food to expect ~ but no names; and the guests had been given an address and a food assignment ~ but no names. None were to divulge their role in this event. While most guests had figured out where they were going several days before their date, some waited until the last minute. They wanted to save the surprise!
Some requested gluten free meals, and we easily accommodated them ~ by assigning them the main course, of course! The hosts were also very adaptable in "filling in" for the unexpected: one last-minute cancellation, not enough guests to fill out the menu, etc. They were splendiferous!
So, all in all, we're very pleased with the response. What a great way to get to know our neighbors. We'll do it again in the fall. Let us know if you are interested. Call Judi Lang at 847-3277 or me at 827-3226.

 | May Day in Nelson!!! | No one knows the true origin of the celebration of May Day. Some say it is as old as time itself. What we in Nelson and Munsonville know is that May Day is a day of casting off the cares of winter, and to enjoy the beautiful New England spring. We come together on the Town Common, some to dance and others to visit with those we may have not seen since the first snowflake fell. The children are delighted with the bright colors of the May Pole ribbons, waiting their turn to help weave the ribbons when it's time for the May Pole Dance. But first, we are treated to the trumpet sounding of Jack In the Green as he heralds the arrival of another beautiful Spring in Nelson. The Jack In the Green Morris Men and the Harrisville Morris Women will be dancing, of course! And we'll have the Cake Walk for the children. Read More >>>
Our May Day celebration will take place on May 6th, beginning at around 11:00 am. We hope to see you there! Folk of all ages look forward to this annual community event. |
 | "A Night to Remember" Book Discussion | She was the world's biggest-ever ship. A luxurious miracle of twentieth-century technology, the Titantic was equipped with the most ingenious safety devices of the time. Yet on a moonlit night in 1912, the "unsinkable" Titantic raced across the glassy Atlantic on her maiden voyage, with only twenty lifeboats for 2,207 passengers. "A Night To Remember", Walter Lord's 1955 classic novel, is the gut-wrenching, minute-by minute account of her fatal collision with an iceberg and how the resulting tragedy brought out the best and worst in human nature. Some gave their lives for others, some fought like animals for survival.
The Library Book Discussion Group meets on May 21st at 10:00 am. "A Night to Remember" may be borrowed from the Library.
