Greetings!

The month of April seems to be the start of 'everything' in Nelson and Munsonville!  The gardens are starting.  The bird nests are starting.  People are starting to get out of doors more and more often.  And the line-up of social gatherings and goings on is starting to get longer and longer.  This April is no exception!

On our calendar this month we have tons of things to do, everything from spaghetti dinners to hiking to area vernal pools to examine the beginnings of tadpoles and the like.  The usual monthly meetings will be held, as well as a special gathering for the Agricultural Commission.  And the NELLS will hold their final luncheon of the season this month, too.

However, so that those folk who wish to attend the Tenebrae Supper on Maundy Thursday may do so, the Pot Luck Supper will not be held this month.

We will begin this week's newsletter with a re-print of last week's message from Linda.
Nelson Neighbor Needs Our Help
Dear Family and Friends,

I have recently been diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, better known as POTS. Standing up is something most of us take for granted; we've been doing it since childhood. However, the simple act of standing up is a challenge for me. My body is unable to adjust to the pull of gravity, and this often makes me lose consciousness and remain unresponsive for up to 30 minutes.

My doctor has recommended that I get a medical service dog to keep me safe - to protect me when I fall and call for help. The training of a medical service dog is very costly.

I am raising money for a Guardian Angel Medical Service Dog to keep me safe. The only option is to secure funding for this project through fundraising, sponsors, and donations.  Will you help?

I am asking you to consider any size donation. For more information about POTS:

Thank you,
Linda Scanlan

Your donation is tax deductible.
Please make checks payable to:

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?
April 20:  "GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER IN NELSON?"
How about you?

Judi Lang and Karen Tolman are orchestrating a fun informal way to gather around the table, share a potluck meal, get to know one another and enjoy the evening.  Have we piqued your interest?  The entertaining element of mystery to this evening is this:  The host's address is provided to the guests, but the host doesn't know who's coming to dinner.  The guests show up at the address, but don't know who else will be there.  In fact, they may not even know their host - even in a small town like Nelson.  A fun and relaxing event - that's it!

You bring a potluck dish and show up or you share your table. So guess who's coming to dinner?  Will it be you?  Curious?

Call Judi 847-3277 or Karen 827-3226 today to find out more and to sign up - either as host or guest.

News from Nelson School
Nelson Elementary School
Today was Spirit Day at Nelson School!  The students enjoyed carrying their baskets while being dressed in lovely spring colors.  Bunny ears were even provided by Ms. Benner to add to the festivities!

It was standing room only at the Spring Concert held last week in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Nelson School!  The students all did such a wonderful job performing several musical selections.  Several students played their instrumental accompaniment with gusto and delight!  This year's Concert also featured the Strings Program, led by their instructor, Sarah Kim.  The entire evening was a delight!

On Friday of last week the students at the school were all introduced to the owls of New England when "Eyes On Owls" came to visit. Mark and Marcia Wilson from Dunstable, Massachusetts, came to share their rescue owls (from small to huge) up close. Everyone participated in a hooting lesson and learned some very wise owl tips.  "Eyes on Owls" is an educational program for schools and community groups that travels throughout New England with their rescued owls.  The owls in the program are those which have been disabled and simply would not be able to live in the wild.  For more information on the program, you can visit their website.

Next week's activities at the school include Ms. Benner's K-2 class's Young Author Teas, the Ferry Beach Parents' Meeting, a meeting of the After School Auction Club, and then ending the week with the Library Classes on Friday.
Last NELLs of the Season on April 11th
NELL's LuncheonAlas!  The last NELLs Luncheon of the season will be held on Wednesday, April 11th, at 12:30.  We'll gather together at The Thai Garden on Main Street in Keene.  This is one of our favorite places to hold our NELLs Luncheon.

We hope that you will make plans to join us this month, as we won't be getting together again until September.  Remember to make reservations by Tuesday, April 10th, by calling Bert Wingerson at 847-9945 or Priscilla Walter at 847-3264.  You can also email Bert at this address.

Now Is the Time ...
... to be a part of something BIG on a small scale!
If you are between the ages of 10 and 14, and love to play, The Game Of Village may be right up your alley.

In The Game of Village, you'll join other children to create, design and build a Village in miniature... complete with miniature characters (Peeps) to live in the Village.

Your Peep can be anyone or thing you like, such as a pirate queen, computer whiz, rock star or skateboarder. All Peeps are welcome in the Village.

The Game of Village will be played at the Village Field Farm, 836 Nelson Road, Nelson, New Hampshire 03457.  The Town of Nelson voted to create three scholarships for the children of Nelson to enable them to attend.  If you would like to apply for this scholarship, please Sign Up!

Please send email to village2012@thegameofvillage.org or call Sarah Bollinger at (603) 876-4328 with any questions.

Auction Update!
Please join us on Saturday, April 28th, for the Fifth Annual PTO auction at the Nelson Town Hall.  As you know our community is fortunate to have many hard working members and gifted artists who donate their services and work.

This year the PTO is hosting a Children's Auction from 5:30-6:00 and is providing each child who attends the auction with $10.00 to spend.  Now is the perfect time to do some spring cleaning of games, books, videos, toys, etc. that your children have outgrown that are still in very good condition. We hope these ideas will get you started.

Family items have begun to trickle in and with each and every new item displayed, excitement grows.  Please remember to send yours in to us so that it can be cataloged, displayed, and included on the amazing auction website

Farmers' Market Vendor Info Meeting
The Agricultural Commissions of Nelson and Harrisville are collaborating to bring you a local Farmers' Market this Summer.

For all interested vendors, there will be a public meeting on Saturday, April 14, from 10:00 to 12:00 at the Nelson Town Hall. Members from both Agricultural Commissions will be present to review the respective bylaws, distribute vendor applications, and answer questions.
(Interested potential customers may attend, too!)

For more information, call David Voymas at 847-3137 or Scott Oliver at 827-3973.

"Cleopatra ~ A Life" Book Group Discussion
If you think two millennia of dusty research and hoary legend have told us all we need to know about this woman, you're in for a surprise. Stacy Schiff, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author of three highly praised biographies, has dug through the earliest sources on Cleopatra, sorted through myth and misapprehension, tossed out the chaff of gossip, and delivered up a spirited life.

This is the novel that will be under discussion this month when the Library Book Group meets on Monday morning, April 16th, at 10:30 am.

Cleopatra ~ Her palace shimmered with gold but was richer still in political and sexual intrigue. Cleopatra, the wealthiest ruler of her time and one of the most powerful women in history, was a canny political strategist, a brilliant manager, a tough negotiator, and the most manipulative of lovers. Although her life spanned fewer than forty years, it reshaped the contours of the ancient world.

Point to ponder:  Stacy Schiff writes, "It is not difficult to understand why Caesar became history, Cleopatra a legend". What are the differences between the two?

We hope you will come to the library and sign out a copy of this amazing book, read it, and then join us at the library on the 16th.
