Greetings!
Town Warrant and Election Results! This was certainly an election season to be remembered. It was invigorating, exciting, and definitely different from other election years. Many community residents were on the ballot seeking positions in our town government. Congratulations to all of the candidates. Win or lose, you each brought an interest and energy to this year's contests.
Many thanks go out to the folk who remained so late counting ballots and enabling those of us in the 'media' to get those results out to the public as soon as possible.
Thanks, too, to Gordon Peery who, with laptop in tow, posted each of the results of the Warrant Articles in real time. You can read the results on the Town of Nelson website.
As for the elections, thank you very much to Teri Upton for emailing the results so quickly.

 | Library Book Discussion Group | The Library Book Discussion Group will be meeting on Monday morning March 19th, 2012 at 10:30 am to discuss the book "Born on a Blue Day" by Daniel Tammet.
This unique first-person account offers a window into the mind of a high-functioning, 27-year-old British autistic savant with Asperger's syndrome. Tammet's ability to think abstractly, deviate from routine, and empathize, interact and communicate with others is impaired, yet he's capable of incredible feats of memorization and mental calculation.
Besides being able to effortlessly multiply and divide huge sums in his head with the speed and accuracy of a computer, Tammet, the subject of the 2005 documentary 'Brainman', learned Icelandic in a single week and recited the number pi up to the 22,514th digit, breaking the European record.
He also experiences synesthesia, an unusual neurological syndrome that enables him to experience numbers and words as "shapes, colors, textures and motions." Tammet traces his life from a frustrating, withdrawn childhood and adolescence to his adult achievements, which include teaching in Lithuania, achieving financial independence with an educational Web site and sustaining a long-term romantic relationship. As one of only about 50 people living today with synesthesia and autism, Tammet's condition is intriguing to researchers; his ability to express himself clearly and with a surprisingly engaging tone (given his symptoms) makes for an account that will intrigue others as well.
We encourage you to join us at the Olivia Rodham Memorial Library on Monday morning, March 19th, at 10:30 am for this fascinating discussion.

 | Meals on Wheels Delivers to Nelson | You may not be aware that Meals on Wheels, a nation-wide community service, also delivers to the residents of Munsonville and Nelson. A hot, delicious meal is delivered to their door Monday through Friday. The friendly driver also provides a daily safety check on those participating in the program.
Meals On Wheels are available for seniors and individuals with disabilities who are home-bound, and not able to prepare a meal. For those with special needs, breakfast bags, weekend meals and special diets are also available. If you or someone you know is in need of this service, please contact Rev. Dawn Garrett-Larsen.
If you have been considering becoming a Meals On Wheels driver for the community of Nelson and Munsonville, we'd love to have you come on board! It just takes a few hours a month of your time. You'll be thoroughly trained for your position as well as given a quick health check up by the marvelous folks at HCS. | It's Auction Season Once Again! | When we returned from February vacation, the staff, students, and members of the PTO turned their collective attention to the 5th Annual PTO Auction, scheduled to be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012, at the Nelson Town Hall. As you know, the auction is the PTO's fundraiser for the year and all monies raised by this event benefit the students of Nelson School. Once again, we consider ourselves to be fortunate to have the auctioneer services of Chris Wallenstein!
In years, past, the PTO has requested that each (school) family provides two donations - one from an area business and the second being a family donation. This year the PTO has made the decision to ask each (school) family to make one donation knowing that some families may choose to contribute additional items. Once again each classroom teacher will create a project for the students in her class that will be included in the auction.
Each year our auction has evolved to include a new component and this year is no different. Our new feature this year will be a Children's Auction held from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm. Each Nelson School student in attendance at he auction will be given $10.00 from the PTO to purchase items from the children's section. As you will recall, interspersed amongst adult items last year were student items and these items will be culled and supplemented with home donations for the children to bid. This presents a wonderful opportunity for each of you to repurpose, rehome, or recycle gently used children's items that are no longer used. This could be games, puzzles, toys, crafts, furniture, etc.
Nelson School will begin accepting auction items on Monday, April 9th. Once the items are received, they will be on display at the school and categorized on the school's auction website, Nelson School Auction.
Here's looking forward to another exciting evening! All my best, Sheila Vara
Editor's note: You may begin sending us your Auction donations today. If you need a copy of the Donation Form for 2012, please visit this Nelson School Webpage.

 | Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? | April 20: "GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER IN NELSON?" How about you?
Judi Lang and Karen Tolman are orchestrating a fun informal way to gather around the table, share a potluck meal, get to know one another and enjoy the evening. Have we piqued your interest? The entertaining element of mystery to this evening is this: The host's address is provided to the guests, but the host doesn't know who's coming to dinner. The guests show up at the address, but don't know who else will be there. In fact, they may not even know their host - even in a small town like Nelson. A fun and relaxing event - that's it!
You bring a potluck dish and show up or you share your table. So guess who's coming to dinner? Will it be you? Curious?
Call Judi 847-3277 or Karen 827-3226 today to find out more and to sign up - either as host or guest.
