The Extended Care Committee of the Nelson School Board asks you to participate in a survey. This will help us anticipate the needs of the school-age population in the coming years. Surveys can be found at the library, town offices, and Nelson School. As an incentive, all surveys received by March 8, will be entered in a drawing for a free pizza dinner! For more information email or call school board member Allison Aldrich , phone: 209-3304. Thanks! |

 | Annual Nelson School District Meeting | The Annual Nelson School District Meeting will be held this Friday evening, March 9th, beginning at 7:00 pm in the Nelson Town Hall. The evening will begin with a short presentation by the students of Nelson school.
Following the students' presentation, the Annual School District Meeting will begin. For more information on the 2012-2013 School District Budget, the Deliberative Warrant, or the Election Warrant, please visit the SAU29 webpage. It is quite possible that School Board Member candidates Jessica Walker and Maureen Lord may be on hand as well. They are seeking election to the position which will be left after the retirement of Michael Cornog after this year's meeting. To Mr. Cornog we offer our heart-felt thanks and gratitude for being such an outstanding Nelson School Board Member over the years. Your dedication to the students, the faculty and staff of Nelson Elementary School, as well as to the Nelson School community has been extraordinary, and we all wish you well in your retirement. |
 | Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner | Wear your best 'green' and come to the Annual Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner to be held this weekend on Saturday, March 10th from 5 pm until 7 pm at the Nelson Congregational Church.
Many leprechauns will be about kickin' up their heels and doin' their shenanigans - and you'd not want to miss out! Of course, most of them will be kept very busy helpin' out the Leprechaun-In-Chief, Charlie O'Lang as he prepares for us all a tradition fare of Corned Beef, Cabbage, Carrots, Potatoes, Turnips, Onions, Irish Soda Bread, Desserts and more!
The cost is just $9.00 for adults and $6.00 for the wee ones under 10 years of age. See you there!

 | Celticladda to Perform This Weekend | Luke Donev [Donforth] and Celticladda will be performing this Saturday, March 10th at the 2nd Saturday Contra Dance sponsored by the Monadnock Folklore Society.
Luke started contra dancing a decade ago in New York, and has called and shared his love of contra dancing from California to Texas to Vermont. He's an emerging choreographer of new dances, and draws on the wealth of dances and dance traditions from everywhere he travels. Celticladda performs exciting tunes from the Irish, Scottish and New England music traditions, played with joy and drive. Based in New Hampshire, Celticladda is a band of devoted and experienced instrumentalists who will inspire both dancers and musicians alike. They are Randy Miller, fiddle, Bill Thomas, flute and Uillean pipes, and Gordon Peery, piano. Dancing begins at 8:00 PM, with a short workshop beforehand. Beginners and singles are welcome and all dances are taught throughout the evening. Admission is $8 or $6 for students and seniors. The dance takes place in the historic Town Hall in Nelson, NH. For more information call 603.762.0235 or visit the Monadnock Folklore Society. |

 | Library Book Discussion Group | The Library Book Discussion Group will be meeting on Monday morning March 19th, 2012 at 10:30 am to discuss the book "Born on a Blue Day" by Daniel Tammet.
This unique first-person account offers a window into the mind of a high-functioning, 27-year-old British autistic savant with Asperger's syndrome. Tammet's ability to think abstractly, deviate from routine, and empathize, interact and communicate with others is impaired, yet he's capable of incredible feats of memorization and mental calculation.
Besides being able to effortlessly multiply and divide huge sums in his head with the speed and accuracy of a computer, Tammet, the subject of the 2005 documentary 'Brainman', learned Icelandic in a single week and recited the number pi up to the 22,514th digit, breaking the European record.
He also experiences synesthesia, an unusual neurological syndrome that enables him to experience numbers and words as "shapes, colors, textures and motions." Tammet traces his life from a frustrating, withdrawn childhood and adolescence to his adult achievements, which include teaching in Lithuania, achieving financial independence with an educational Web site and sustaining a long-term romantic relationship. As one of only about 50 people living today with synesthesia and autism, Tammet's condition is intriguing to researchers; his ability to express himself clearly and with a surprisingly engaging tone (given his symptoms) makes for an account that will intrigue others as well.
We encourage you to join us at the Olivia Rodham Memorial Library on Monday morning, March 19th, at 10:30 am for this fascinating discussion.

 | It's Auction Season Once Again! | When we returned from February vacation, the staff, students, and members of the PTO turned their collective attention to the 5th Annual PTO Auction, scheduled to be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012, at the Nelson Town Hall. As you know, the auction is the PTO's fundraiser for the year and all monies raised by this event benefit the students of Nelson School. Once again, we consider ourselves to be fortunate to have the auctioneer services of Chris Wallenstein!
In years, past, the PTO has requested that each (school) family provides two donations - one from an area business and the second being a family donation. This year the PTO has made the decision to ask each (school) family to make one donation knowing that some families may choose to contribute additional items. Once again each classroom teacher will create a project for the students in her class that will be included in the auction.
Each year our auction has evolved to include a new component and this year is no different. Our new feature this year will be a Children's Auction held from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm. Each Nelson School student in attendance at he auction will be given $10.00 from the PTO to purchase items from the children's section. As you will recall, interspersed amongst adult items last year were student items and these items will be culled and supplemented with home donations for the children to bid. This presents a wonderful opportunity for each of you to repurpose, rehome, or recycle gently used children's items that are no longer used. This could be games, puzzles, toys, crafts, furniture, etc.
Nelson School will begin accepting auction items on Monday, April 9th. Once the items are received, they will be on display at the school and categorized on the school's auction website, Nelson School Auction.
Here's looking forward to another exciting evening! All my best, Sheila Vara
Editor's note: You may begin sending us your Auction donations today. If you need a copy of the Donation Form for 2012, please visit this Nelson School Webpage.
