Greetings!
Happy Snow Day! Happy Leap Day! Be safe today and tomorrow and have fun with this extra day this year.
Today's Quote: "We need artists to help us come together and share our voices and build community around powerful issues concerning our roles in the world and our planet's survival. Compassion must be translated into action." ~ Natasha Mayers
March of 2012 is shaping up to be a very busy month here in our community. Hope to see you at one or more of the fun events this month!
Please be sure you see the list of events at the end of this newsletter. To write about each one separately would make this newsletter very, very, long! Don't forget that Sarah Cucchi will be competing in the State Spelling Bee on Saturday. Best of luck to you, Sarah!
The PTO will be meeting on Monday, and the First Tuesday Tea will be at the home of Sally Ripley on Tuesday at 10:00 am.

 | And the Survey Says ... | Attention, Nelson parents of children ages 0-12!
The Extended Care Committee of the Nelson School Board asks you to participate in a survey. This will help us anticipate the needs of the school-age population in the coming years. Surveys can be found at the library, town offices, and Nelson School. As an incentive, all surveys received by next Wednesday, March 8, will be entered in a drawing for a free pizza dinner! For more information email or call school board member Allison Aldrich , phone: 209-3304. Thanks! |
 | Weather Cancels 1st Thursday Pot Luck | Ah! The wonders of a New England winter! Especially THIS winter! Due to the storm, the 1st Thursday Pot Luck Supper that would have been held tomorrow will be cancelled.
Also, please note that we are not meeting in April because of a Maundy Thursday event at the church.
We will resume in May with a dessert meeting. Hopefully we can invite some of our new town officials who might be willing to meet with us for conversation and dessert.

 | Tim Eriksen in Concert | The Monadnock Folklore Society is very excited to present Tim Eriksen in concert on Friday, March 2nd, 8:00 PM at the Nelson Town Hall. Admission is $12/$9(seniors, youth, & advance internet). Tim Eriksen is acclaimed for transforming American tradition with his startling interpretations of old ballads, love songs, shape-note gospel and dance tunes form New England and Southern Appalachia. He combines hair-raising vocals with inventive accompaniment on banjo, fiddle, guitar and bajo sexto - a twelve string Mexican acoustic bass - creating a distinctive hardcore Americana sound that ranges from the bare bones of solo unaccompanied singing on his album Soul of the January Hills (Appleseed 2010) through the stripped-down voice and bajo sexto Christmas album 'Star in the East' to the lush, multi-layered arrangements on Josh Billings's 'Voyage', an upcoming album of northern roots American music. Eriksen's own compositions, which NetRhythms UK described as "strange and original works," have been featured in films like the Billy Bob Thornton vehicle Chrystal and the upcoming documentary Behold the Earth. Eriksen's other notable work has included extensive contributions to Anthony Minghella's 2004 Oscar-winning film Cold Mountain as well as collaborations ranging from hardcore punk and Bosnian pop to symphony orchestra and the 2010 Grammy-nominated album Across the Divide with Afro-Cuban world-jazz pianist Omar Sosa. While Eriksen's curiosity and passion have led him on many musical journeys besides American roots - from punk rock and shape-note gospel through South Indian classical music and Bosnian pop to world jazz and contemporary symphonic music - all his explorations are linked by the qualities of intensity, directness, and authority which combine in a music that captures a truth about human experience and expresses it without apology.

 | GaMe NiGhT @ the LiBrArY!!! | Ah! Another fun Tuesday evening is before us as we gather for GaMe NiGhT @ the LiBrArY on the 6th of March. We'll have the usual set up of games .... Scrabble, Bananagrams, Dominoes, Mexican Train Dominoes, Trumpet, and assorted other games like cribbage, chess, and checkers.
This month we'll have a special treat in store for you! If you would like to learn origami, come to the library for game night on March 6th at 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm. Papers of differing sizes will be available, but feel free to bring papers that you may like or have, such as magazine covers or paper from your recycling piles. There will be instruction on how to make boxes or a bowl for beginners, and, if time allows, to work on a geometric form.

 | It's Auction Season Once Again! | When we returned from February vacation, the staff, students, and members of the PTO turned their collective attention to the 5th Annual PTO Auction, scheduled to be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012, at the Nelson Town Hall. As you know, the auction is the PTO's fundraiser for the year and all monies raised by this event benefit the students of Nelson School. Once again, we consider ourselves to be fortunate to have the auctioneer services of Chris Wallenstein!
In years, past, the PTO has requested that each (school) family provides tow donations - one from an area business and the second being a family donation. This year the PTO has made the decision to ask each (school) family to make one donation knowing that some families may choose to contribute additional items. Once again each classroom teacher will create a project for the students in her class that will be included in the auction.
Each year our auction has evolved to include a new component and this year is no different. Our new feature this year will be a Children's Auction held from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm. Each Nelson School student in attendance at he auction will be given $10.00 from the PTO to purchase items from the children's section. As you will recall, interspersed amongst adult items last year were student items and these items will be culled and supplemented with home donations for the children to bid. This presents a wonderful opportunity for each of you to repurpose, rehome, or recycle gently used children's items that are no longer used. This could be games, puzzles, toys, crafts, furniture, etc.
Nelson School will begin accepting auction items on Monday, April 9th. Once the items are received, they will be on display at the school and categorized on the school's auction website, Nelson School Auction.
Here's looking forward to another exciting evening! All my best, Sheila Vara
Editor's note: You may begin sending us your Auction donations today. If you need a copy of the Donation Form for 2012, please visit this Nelson School Webpage.
