Community Quote:
"A machine has value only as it produces more than it consumes - so check your value to the community."

Our community has been running like a well-oiled machine this past week!  And next week proves to be even better ... and the week after that, too!

Nelson School Holds Open House
Line drawing of the Nelson School
Last Saturday afternoon from 12:30 until 2:30 the faculty, staff, and students held an Open House for the interested members of the Sullivan community.  Each of the Nelson School students was a wonderful ambassador for their school, from the youngest Kindergartener (who spoke regarding learning Spanish in the school), to the eldest 6th Grade 'statesman'.

Ms. Vara, teaching principal, and her teachers and staff were on hand throughout the Open House to answer questions posed by the many Sullivan parents and grandparents who arrived.  The school itself was shined and polished to a "T" with lots of informational stations showcasing the many facets of the educational programs offered at Nelson Elementary.  The School Board was well represented, with each School Board member in attendance, as well as the Nelson School PTO, and other Nelson community members with ties to the school.

The afternoon was a huge success and all of the visitors left with a deep and warm impression of our school, and a feeling of awe at the amount of and display of community offered by our Nelson residents.

If it's been a while since you have touched base with the Nelson Elementary School, you may want to visit the school website.

Pot Luck Supper Follow Up
Many interested community members arrived at our last 1st Thursday Pot Luck Supper armed with many questions to put to our guests, Mike Sarro of Resident Power, and Lucy McVitty Weber and Tara Sad, State Representatives.  Each of the Representatives spoke of the upcoming redistricting which will move Nelson to Senate District 10 along with Keene.

Rep. Weber has also sent along an email to the community addressing more fully some of the concerns that were shared that evening.  Gordon Peery has graciously published her email in full at the Town of Nelson website.  Lucy has also invited anyone interested in being on the email list to email her at  lwmcv@comcast.net.

The next 1st Thursday Pot Luck Supper will take place on March 1st, at 6:30 pm in the Melville Fellowship Hall of the Nelson Congregational Church.  We invite you to attend.

Book Discussion Group @ the Library
The Library Book Discussion Group will meet Monday morning at 10:30 on February 27th.  We will be discussing the book "Tiger's Wife" by Tea Obreht.

Book Synopsis:  In a Balkan country mending from years of conflict, Natalia, a young doctor, arrives on a mission of mercy at an orphanage by the sea. By the time she and her lifelong friend Zóra begin to inoculate the children there, she feels age-old superstitions and secrets gathering everywhere around her. Secrets her outwardly cheerful hosts have chosen not to tell her. Secrets involving the strange family digging for something in the surrounding vineyards. Secrets hidden in the landscape itself.

Books may be taken on loan from the Olivia Rodham Memorial Library to be read in preparation for this discussion.  We hope you will be able to join us for this monthly event.

Johnny Trombly Scholarship

Applications are now available for the 2012 Johnny Trombly Scholarship.

The Johnny Trombly Memorial Scholarship was established by the Monadnock Folklore Society in 2001, at the request of Bob McQuillen who provided an initial endowment. Named in honor of Bob's mentor, the Scholarship is awarded annually to an individual under the age of 18 who would like to study traditional New England contra dance music.

The scholarship provides up to $500 for students to use for lessons, mentoring, music and dance camps, etc. The money is intended to be used directly for fees related to these opportunities, not for music, instruments, or other tangible items. In considering applications, the Monadnock Folklore Society board is open to creative ideas within these parameters.
