Greetings!
Can You Spell 'Twinkly'?
[I didn't even know there was such a word, unless it came from the 'Twilight' series!] 'Twinkly' and over 100 other words in more than twenty rounds were spelled correctly during yesterday's Nelson Elementary School Annual Spelling Bee held in the Multi-Purpose Room. Students in grades 4 through 6 had been practicing for weeks. At one-thirty in the afternoon the entire school as well as guests had gathered to begin the Bee which was led by Mrs. Roach, 3rd and 4th Grade teacher. By two-ten, only four students remained of the over a dozen who had begun. These four students battled back-and-forth for several more rounds while the tension grew in the room. No one dared miss a word, as each of them had already missed one word in previous rounds.
Finally, just before the buses were to arrive, the Bee was over! We are very happy to let you know that the winner was 6th grader Sarah Cucchi. Molly Gray, from the 4th grade, came in as the runner-up and may be the 'stand-in' for Sarah if Sarah cannot attend the State Bee. We know that Sarah will be a very fine representative from Nelson School when she goes to the State Spelling Bee next month to be held in Concord. But what is so remarkable about Sarah's triumph is this ... just three weeks ago Sarah had undergone major surgery to remove a tumor from her head. This tumor was caused by a disease called Langerhan Cell Hystosis. It is rare and they don't fully understand what causes it, but at least they know how to treat it! Congratulations to both of the girls, Molly and Sarah. Fantastic performance!

Mostly women attend the First Tuesday Tea, but occasionally men come and join join us as well.
We gather for tea and coffee and goodies on the First Tuesday morning of each month at 10:00. There is a different host(ess) each month. The host usually makes tea and coffee and makes one "goodie" but the people who come also show up with all sorts of food, muffins, coffee cake, fruit, cheese and crackers. You don't have to bring something to come, but most people do so there is usually a feast! If you'd like to join us, just give Sara a call at 847-9123, or drop her an email. Want to know more? |
 | GaMe NiGhT @ the LiBrArY! | Join us Tuesday, February 7th, at 7:00 pm for another GaMe NiGhT @ the LiBrArY! Everyone is invited. Refreshments will be served.
In January a record breaking crowd of 26 people turned out for Game Night at the Library. We played Scrabble, Quiddler, Mexican Train Dominoes, Rummikub, and assorted other games. A good time was had by all. We encourage you to join us this month. Please come and bring your favorite game if you like, or get your favorite card game going. We'll just see what develops.
Let's make use of the Library as a space for Nelsonites to gather during the dark of the winter. We hope to see you there!

 | Johnny Trombly Scholarship | Applications are now available for the 2012 Johnny Trombly Scholarship. The Johnny Trombly Memorial Scholarship was established by the Monadnock Folklore Society in 2001, at the request of Bob McQuillen who provided an initial endowment. Named in honor of Bob's mentor, the Scholarship is awarded annually to an individual under the age of 18 who would like to study traditional New England contra dance music. The scholarship provides up to $500 for students to use for lessons, mentoring, music and dance camps, etc. The money is intended to be used directly for fees related to these opportunities, not for music, instruments, or other tangible items. In considering applications, the Monadnock Folklore Society board is open to creative ideas within these parameters.
