Greetings!

Christmas reminds us we are not alone.  We are not unrelated atoms, bouncing and ricocheting amid aliens, but are a
part of something, which holds and sustains us.

May the good times and treasures of the present become the golden memories of tomorrow!
We wish you lots of love, joy and happiness in this happy time.
Pancake Breakfast Time!
Pancake Breakfast'Twas the morning 'fore New Year's
And all though the school
Came the aroma of Charlie's pancakes
Sure does make your mouth drool!

The flapjacks are stacked
In a glorious manner
Served by the amazing young students
Of the class of Ms. Benner.

On butter! On syrup!
Pour juice and hot tea!
Add breakfast meat and potatoes,
And 'cakes gluten-free!

So we hope you will come
To our breakfast this time
From 8 'till 11
We'll treat you just fine!

OK.  So this part won't rhyme.
Just make plans to come to the next Pancake Breakfast at the Nelson Elementary School, Saturday morning, December 31st, from 8:00 am until 11:00 am.  Each plate is just $7.00, and yes, there will be gluten-free options as well.

This pancake breakfast is being sponsored by and will benefit the
K 1 2 class of Ms.Benner.  See you there!
Thank You, Nelson School Pen Pals!
Anne of Green GablesThe Second Annual Pen Pal Project will take place once again this year at the Nelson Elementary School.

Last year we were treated to the classic The Secret Garden. It tied into our school theme of gardening. You may have noticed our beautiful flower beds in front of the school and bouquets of flowers distributed around town.

This year our Pen Pal theme is "Making the World a Better Place". We will be reading Anne of Green Gables together.  This bestselling novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery was published in 1908. Set in 1878, it was written as fiction for readers of all ages, but in recent decades has been considered a children's book. Montgomery found her inspiration for the book on an old piece of paper that she had written at a young age, describing a couple that were mistakenly sent an orphan girl instead of a boy, yet decided to keep her. Montgomery also drew upon her own childhood experiences in rural Prince Edward Island. Montgomery used a photograph of Evelyn Nesbit, which she had clipped from New York's Metropolitan Magazine, and pasted the framed clipping on the wall of her bedroom, as the model for the face of Anne Shirley, the book's main character.

Since publication, Anne of Green Gables has sold more than 50 million copies!  This year our Pen Pal Project will begin on January 3rd, extending  to  mid-February.  Community book pals will have the opportunity to exchange several  letters  about the book before meeting their students pals at our culminating extravaganza. Last year was such a success!  This year will be even better!

Remember When?
Remember the Nelson Community Forum?  Remember that dream we all shared about having a Resources Directory so that we could all trade our talents and skills with one another?

Well, you have that opportunity!

Barter Central is now live at the Marketplace!  Trade something you know for something you need. Trade something you have for something you'd like to know.  Offer your skills to whomever needs them.  Or post a message that lets the community know that you are looking for a particular skill.  Who wouldn't love to have a plate of brownies from your kitchen in exchange for a few hours' worth of weed-pulling?  Or what about those carpentry skills?  You just never know what someone might need.

Start listing at the Marketplace.  Let's make those neighborly connections!

Game Night at the LibraryBack By Popular Demand!!!!
Game Night at the Nelson Library, on the first Tuesday of January, February and March; 7 to 9 PM.

Everyone is invited. Refreshments will be served.

Even in bad weather, a good group turned out each month last winter for Game Night at the Library. We played Scrabble, Bananagrams, Dominoes, Mexican Train Dominoes, Trumpet, and assorted other games. A good time was had by all.

We encourage you to join us this winter.  We'll also have cribbage, chess, checkers and other games available. Please come and bring your favorite game if you like, or get your favorite card game going.  We'll just see what develops.

Let's make use of the Library as a space for Nelsonites to gather during the dark of the winter. We hope to see you there!
