 | Be A Nelson School Pen Pal | The Second Annual Pen Pal Project will take place once again this year at the Nelson Elementary School. This comes as very exciting news to everyone who took the opportunity to participate last year. If you missed this great opportunity last year, be sure to let us know that you want to be a participant this year. We would love to have you sign up to be a book pal to one of our students. Please sign up with Kim Keating at the Nelson School before December 16th to become a Pen Pal Participant. You may also call the school at 847-3408.
Last year we were treated to the classic The Secret Garden. It tied into our school theme of gardening. You may have noticed our beautiful flower beds in front of the school and bouquets of flowers distributed around town.
This year our Pen Pal theme is "Making the World a Better Place". We will be reading Anne of Green Gables together. This bestselling novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery was published in 1908. Set in 1878, it was written as fiction for readers of all ages, but in recent decades has been considered a children's book. Montgomery found her inspiration for the book on an old piece of paper that she had written at a young age, describing a couple that were mistakenly sent an orphan girl instead of a boy, yet decided to keep her. Montgomery also drew upon her own childhood experiences in rural Prince Edward Island. Montgomery used a photograph of Evelyn Nesbit, which she had clipped from New York's Metropolitan Magazine, and pasted the framed clipping on the wall of her bedroom, as the model for the face of Anne Shirley, the book's main character.
Since publication, Anne of Green Gables has sold more than 50 million copies! This year our Pen Pal Project will begin on January 3rd, extending to mid-February. Community book pals will have the opportunity to exchange several letters about the book before meeting their students pals at our culminating extravaganza. Last year was such a success! Don't miss out this year to make a difference in the life of a Nelson School student.

 | Mayhem & Merriment - December 17
| On Saturday, December 17 we'll hold our Annual Solstice Party starting at 7:00 PM. The Monadnock Folklore Society brings this community event to the Nelson Town Hall each year, admission is $5, and treats are appreciated for the dessert potluck. This year the evening will begin with a holiday concert featuring a selection of traditional and original seasonal music; as part of the concert 2011 Johnny Trombly Scholarship recipients will entertain us with their musicianship. The Folklore Society invites you to bring along your favorite holiday dessert and we'll supply the beverages for the intermission. After the concert the chairs and benches are cleared to make way for a traditional New England Contradance.
Unfortunately, or not, the dance is often interrupted by various groups of unsavory characters presenting their idea of seasonal entertainment. These diversions, sometimes involving costumed individuals making complete fools of themselves or performing ancient ritual dances to help us through this dark time of the year, are generally tolerated as once they are applauded and fed we can return to dancing the night away.

 | Library Book Discussion Group | On Monday morning, December 19th at 10:00 am, we will be discussing "The Floor of Heaven: A True Tale of the Last Frontier and the Yukon Gold Rush"by Howard Blum Books may be borrowed from the library. This is a narrative history set before, during and just after the rush. Blum traces the lives of three storied men - a prospector, a cowboy turned Pinkerton detective and a notorious conman - whose fates intersected in an armed confrontation over a stash of gold in 1898. That incident comes fairly late in the book and could even be viewed as somewhat anticlimactic, but getting there is so much fun that it hardly matters. The face-off between Blum's three principals in the harbor of Skagway, Alaska, is really just a pretext for spinning yarns about three remarkable American characters. The Library Book Discussion Group meets in the Olivia Rodham Memorial Library on the third Monday morning of each month at 10:00 am. |

 | The Greenhouse Project
| Sheila Vara, Nelson School Principal Last year the Nelson School PTO and members of the Nelson School staff worked collaboratively to identify needs and/or long term projects at Nelson School. After considerable brainstorming and careful deliberation, the decision was made to work with the land which would include beautifying the school, planting a school garden, and the acquisition of a small green house. April's auction of 2011, generated $6,928.50 for the PTO and a portion of this money was allocated to the greenhouse project which we realized would be a multiple year endeavor.
In the winter of 2010, the staff generated a three to five year plan that began with the building, planting and maintenance of flower boxes to both beautify the school as well as to share with the community. Using grant money, the materials for this project were purchased and five flower boxes were constructed by Don Carlisle and his father Dale. In late spring, the staff of Nelson School researched plantings that would thrive in the established location, spent a staff meeting at the local nursery choosing plants, and the students planted them before heading off for summer vacation. The flower boxes required little maintenance over the summer, and when we returned in the fall, the flowers were cut and vases sent to the Town Offices. It is our intent that in years to come, flower vases will also be shared with the church, library, and community members.
During our second year, we will continue with our efforts to beautify the school and are hoping to plant day lilies on the perimeter of the chain link fence. This fall the town generously supplied us with daffodil bulbs which the children enjoyed planting. We have a composting program in place and will be using our rich humus to fortify our plantings in the spring of 2012. Our next step is to grow pumpkins on the hill and establish a small school garden from which the students will be able to pick lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and beans that will enhance the school lunch program.
Once each of these steps has been established and becomes sustainable, we look forward to the acquisition of a small greenhouse in which students will plant flats of flowers and vegetables to sell to the community for their spring garden needs. We know that each of these activities create real world learning opportunities for students in the areas of mathematics and science.
We envision working hand in hand with members of the community as this multi-year project evolves and we intend to bring in speakers and those with expertise to help guide us to make our dreams possible.
