New Hours for the Town Offices
The Brick Schoolhouse

Teri Upton, Town Clerk

As of December 6, 2011, the office hours for the Selectmen and for the Town Clerk/Tax Collector will be Tuesday and Thursday mornings 9am until Noon, and Tuesday evenings 5pm until 8pm.  The office will not be open to the public on Wednesdays.

Due to state budget cuts, the state Municipal Agent desk (vehicle and boat registration desk) will not be available during all of our open hours.  They are open Tuesday evenings, therefore we are changing our hours so that we will have back up if we need to call them.  The Selectmen agreed that we should be open the same evening, not two separate evenings, and have agreed to change their hours as well.

As well, in November, the office, both the Selectmen and the Clerk/Collector, will NOT be open Wednesday evening Nov. 23, or Thursday Nov. 24, Thanksgiving Day.

Thanks so much,

 Teri

Pot Luck Supper Update
It was so nice to meet with so many of you last Thursday evening at the monthly Pot Luck Supper.  So many relevant topics were brought forward to the group and there was a lot of good news to share!

Lisa Sieverts, representing the Town Buildings Committee, let us all know that our new Town Sexton, Bob Jones, was able to repair the underpinnings of the Town Hall floor, making it safer and more stable for all.  The Town Buildings Committee (TBC) is looking further into obtaining grant monies to fund future repairs.  We also heard of at least one group who might be willing to fund a portion of the over-all project.

Allison Aldrich, Nelson School Board member, spoke extensively about the planned School Forum that had been planned for December.  Unfortunately the Forum has had to be canceled due to holiday commitments.  Allison has invited interested persons to get in touch with her about the various committees.

During the Pot Luck Supper's 'Open Forum' it was decided to plan each future Pot Luck around a specific topic or need.  Kathy Schillemat has offered to give Wildlife Theme Presentations, UNH Cooperative Extension style, and there was a lot of talk about continuing the school discussions such as we have been doing with the TBC discussions.

We also decided to invite everyone interested in food to the Pot Luck Supper at 6:30 p.m., and then to invite all those interested in hearing the speaker or the planned program for the evening to arrive at 7:00 p.m.  Sound like a plan to you?

Betsey Church informed us that the Welcoming Committee is doing great, having welcomed several new families to Nelson.  The group is in the process of putting together Welcome Baskets to take to each new resident.  The Activities Committee is looking for a new Chairperson.  Anyone interested could contact Betsey Church.

Next month's Pot Luck Supper will be held on December 1st!  Hard to believe that it's just three weeks from tomorrow!

As the date gets closer, we'll inform you what the specific need or topic for the evening will be.
Nelson School Forum

Dear Nelson friends and neighbors,

Many of you had expected a meeting to be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, with the Nelson School Board concerning the Nelson School Forum Follow-Up.  We regret to announce that, due to scheduling, this meeting cannot take place.

We are still working on the formation of our committees, with willing volunteers. These were chosen out of many of the possible options from the forums, as being the most time-sensitive, and needing a concentrated group willing to study in detail a way to help continue the school in our town.

The committees will:

*Research the application process and the pros and cons of forming a charter school.

*Track the current legislation at the state government level re the voucher system of school funding, with an eye to drawing non-resident students to tuition at Nelson school.

*Develop an effective marketing campaign to draw families to our Blue Ribbon School (and town!).

*A liaison group to work with the town of Sullivan as they decide where to send their students, pending their possible departure from Monadnock Regional School District.

If you have an interest in any of these committees, or would like to be kept informed as to the progress of the Nelson School Board, please email Kelly French or Allison Aldrich.
Scouting For Food
Boy Scouts - Good Turn for AmericaScouts in New Hampshire are answering the call by collecting food and supporting community agencies that assist those in need.  We need your help with our annual Good Turn project for New Hampshire's less fortunate families.

Last weekend the Scouts in Nelson went door to door delivering door knocker reminders to the members of the community. This Saturday, November 12th, the Scouts will return to collect your donations.

Please place non-perishable food and household items in plastic bags or in boxes and leave them in a visible location outside your front door or by the base of your mailbox (please do not hang on your mailbox.)  Avoid glass containers. Please place them outside by 8:30 a.m.

For more information about this food drive, or about Scouting in Nelson, visit nhscouting.org, or call Elaine Giacomo.

What's Going On with the PTO?
Nelson School PTO 2011The Nelson School PTO met last Monday evening, November 7th, at 6:45 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room of the School to discuss the many ideas brought forward by the Nelson School Staff and from interested school parents.

All-school enrichment activities will be woven into the PTO budget for this year, a very exciting proposition!  We will also be working very closely with Ms. Vara, the school staff, and the students to bring their dream of owning a greenhouse to fruition.  To this end, we have drafted an Action Plan:
   *  Information gathering
   *  Create the Vision
   *  Marketing to the community

You can obtain further information about the projects, or the Nelson School PTO in general by emailing Joy Birdsey.

If you would like to join us, you are most welcome to do so.  We meet the first Monday evening of the month in the Multi-Purpose Room at the School at 6:45 p.m.   We'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas.
November at the NCC
Nelson Congregational Church
Over the summer we lost one of the pillars of our church, Dorothy "Dot" French.  A memorial fund has been established in her name that will help support the church for many years to come.  If you would like to make a donation to the Dot French Memorial Fund, no matter how large or small, please send your check to:  Nelson Congregational Church UCC, 830 Nelson Road, Nelson, NH 03457.

We invite you to bring to church donations of healthy foods with which to help fill our Thanksgiving Baskets and to help stock our food pantry.  We will be filling the Thanksgiving Baskets after the Worship Service on Sunday, November 20th.  Please consider your donations carefully and bring healthy items that will help to make a meal.  If you bring a can of tuna, consider bringing noodles and a creamed soup with which to make a casserole.  Or, if you bring pasta sauce, how about some pasta to go with it, or a cornbread mix with some rice or beans.  We are so very grateful for any and all donations from our community.  Remember, even '1' can fight hunger!

As is the custom for the church, there is a list of items needed for this year's Thanksgiving Baskets posted on the Church Bulletin Board.  You may also email the church at  nelsonchurchucc@gmail.com

November Meals On Wheels
Meals on WheelsThis is just a quick reminder to our Volunteer Drivers and our 'Lunch Guests'.

There will be no delivery of the Meals on Wheels Program on Friday, November 25th, the day after Thanksgiving.  We will resume regular deliveries on Monday, November 28th.

Keep in mind, too, that as winter approaches, and the snow falls heavily on the Hills of Nelson, that we may have to cancel a day or two here and there.  Stay tuned to WMUR TV and if they annouce "No School" for our area, then there will be no Meals on Wheels delivery on that day.

greenhouseHow Green Can We Grow?
Peace rocks in the GardenSheila Vara, Nelson School Principal

Last year the Nelson School PTO and members of the Nelson School staff worked collaboratively to identify needs and/or long term projects at Nelson School. After considerable brainstorming and careful deliberation, the decision was made to work with the land which would include beautifying the school, planting a school garden, and the acquisition of a small green house April's auction of 2010, generated $6,928.50 for the PTO and a portion of this money was allocated to the green house which we realized would be a multiple year endeavor.

In the winter of 2010, the staff generated a three to five year plan that began with the building, planting and maintenance of flower boxes to both beautify the school as well as to share with the community. Using grant money, the materials for this project were purchased and five flower boxes were constructed by   read more >>
