Greetings!

It is Fire Prevention Week October 9-15.

Please check out the United States Fire Administration's website to obtain information on how to protect your family from fire.  Home safety inspections should be a part of a weekly routine - checking electrical cords, dusting and checking the batteries in smoke alarms, keeping kitchens free from clutter around the stove, and cleaning dryer vents are just some of the ways we can reduce the risk of fire.
One important item that many people do not think about is to make sure you have up-to-date insurance.  If you rent, check on how to purchase renter's insurance.  Too many times renters find out they have no insurance to cover the destruction caused by a fire.

It's Fire Prevention Week this week.  Be safe!
Supervisors of the Checklist
The Supervisors of the Checklist will be meeting at the Town Offices on Friday, October 14 at 7:00 PM.

This will be to register new voters, make additions/changes to the checklist and voters may change their party affiliation at this time.

This will be the last time that anyone can change their party affiliation before the Presidential Primary. The primary date is not set yet as NH is trying to be first and they are waiting to see about some other states.

Flu Shots
Jane Kirk visited HCS last week and inquired when Home Health Care Services would be coming to the Old Brick Schoolhouse to give flu shots this year.  Well, they are not coming this year to Nelson, so those people who have planned on getting their flu shots at the Old Brick Schoolhouse (the Town Offices) should make plans to go elsewhere.

It is felt that it is due to budget cuts that HCS will not be traveling to Nelson this year.  If you, or someone you know, might need a ride to town where Flu Shot Clinics are being held, visit our Marketplace, and list your ride-share need.

Thank you, Jane, for helping get this information out to the community.

1st Thursday Pot Luck Supper Update
Many friends joined us last Thursday at the 1st Thursday Pot Luck Supper held in the Henry Melville Fellowship Hall.  The warmth was all around as we partook of some really delicious foods ad enjoyed each other's company.

Following the 'dinner', we heard an update from Lisa Sieverts of the Town Buildings Committee.  It sounds as if great strides forward are being made as this group works hard to get repairs made to the Town Hall, Library, and Town Office buildings.  They will be meeting with Bob Jones, Town Sexton, soon.

We also learned that Kris Finnegan, our librarian, had done all of the work to get our town buildings certified for eligibility to be listed on the Historical Registry.  Kudos to her for undertaking this project!

On behalf of the Nelson Trails Committee, Dave Birchenough brought the two mailboxes which will grace each end of Trail #1, "The Old Road to Dublin", open to the public in October.  These mailboxes are unique in that each student at the Nelson Elementary School had a hand in decorating them!  You can read more about the Trail Opening Celebration below.

We also spoke about the upcoming Halloween party to be held at the Nelson Town Hall on the 30th.  This will be held in the afternoon with lots of treats and games for the children, as well as a 'trick-or-treat' in the Village.  We hope to include every child in town at this event.

Our next Pot Luck Supper will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall on November 3rd.

Rummage Sale Saturday
Nelson Congregational ChurchThe Nelson Congregational Church will hold a Rummage Sale on Saturday, October 15th from 9 until noon.

One of the great things that makes our rummage sale so unique is a "Donation Box" for your free-will offering when you purchase items.  So, take what you will use and give what you can.  Proceeds will be used to help local families in need.

This year we will be doing something a little different in that we will be accepting clothing for all seasons, and any clothing not taken during the Rummage Sale will be donated to InterAct, a KHS organization, to take on one of their mission trips.

For more information on the Rummage Sale, please email the church:  nelsonchurchucc@gmail.com

First Walking Trail to Open In Nelson
Jeanette Baker

The Trails Committee of Moving in Step and the Conservation Commission invite the people of Nelson to an event to celebrate the opening of our first walking trail.

The event features a talk by Jeanette Baker on her Appalachian Trail Hike last year. The following afternoon there will be on a walk on the Old Road to Dublin, oldest documented road in Nelson. Mrs. Baker's talk is at the Town Hall at 7PM, Friday October 21st. The walk will take place Saturday the 22nd at 1:45PM.

The Trails Committee has been working to layout and mark trails for the people in Nelson to able to walk and appreciate the natural and cultural richness of our town. Detailed trail guides and maps will be available for these walks. The Old Road to Dublin is the first trail to be completed by the committee ...

Nelson School Forum
Line drawing of the Nelson School

Hello, neighbors!

Although it's been some months since the School Forum, the Nelson School Board has been thinking and planning about ways to continue the discussion. Whether or not you were present at the forums, we would like invite you to meet with us to discuss some of the ideas generated by the forum, and seeing if there are other thoughts about the best ways to plan for the future of the students of Nelson.

Please reply to me, or call me at 209-3304, or let Kelly French or Mike Cornog know of your interest and availability. The School Board is meeting for a retreat next week and will then propose a time and place for this discussion.

Thanks to all for your continued support of the Nelson school!

Recent Loon Rescue on Center Pond
Entangled Loon on Center PondKathy Schillemat forwarded a newsletter to us containing an article written by Mike Sharon, 2009-2010 Umbagog Field Biologist, of the Loon Preservation Committee out of Moultonborough.

In the article, Mike writes of the rescue of an adult loon entangled in fishing line left in Center Pond in Nelson.  It' a heart-warming story, so we're passing it along to bring a smile to your day.

"I received an email from Susie Burbidge asking if anyone could respond to a call about a possible tangled loon on Center Pond in Nelson, NH. I happened to be in Keene that day and had just

finished studying, so I decided to check it out.  Upon my arrival, I found a man named Bud with a dog crate that I could use in the event the loon needed to be transported to a rehabilitator. He told me Buzz (the man who called LPC to report the loon) was at the boat launch waiting for me with a row boat.

After a quick introduction, Buzz paddled me out to meet his son Evan who was keeping an eye on the loon.  Buzz then dropped me on shore and he and Evan started to drive the loon closer to my position. I was now in the water with net in hand, waiting for a chance to scoop up the bird.  The loon cooperated well and in no time I had captured it.

I used my shirt to cover its' head (this helps calm the bird) and explained to Buzz how to carefully hold the head to avoid injury to both of them.  I proceeded to get control of the loon's wings and legs and then asked Evan to start (gingerly) cutting the large amount of monofilament line away from the birds head, neck and wings.  Some of the line around the neck was very tight, but Evan gently got his finger behind the line and kept cutting. After removing all of the fishing line, I checked the loon again for any other injuries or signs that it had swallowed some fishing tackle.  Thankfully, I concluded that the bird was just severely tangled and could be released right away.  Buzz set the bird in the water and I released the head. The loon immediately dove and swam out about 50 feet before it popped up. It wailed a few times and then settled down and started preening.

My hat's off to Buzz and Evan Laughlin for their patience, care and hard work. Thanks to Bud for providing the carrier and to the loon for being so cooperative. I hope it has a safe flight back to the ocean this fall.

Lastly, I want to wish Buzz a Happy Birthday (his birthday was the next day)!"

NH Open Doors
NH Open Doors is an annual cooperative statewide touring and shopping event designed to showcase New Hampshire's outstanding artists, craftspeople, retail shops, specialty food producers, farm stands and orchards, wineries, restaurants, and lodging properties, as well as our cultural events and attractions.

This year, NH Open Doors will take place November 5 - 6. The weekend is a great opportunity for your community to promote the talented people who live and work there.

New Hampshire's historical organizations can participate in NH Open Doors-and raise their own profile-in many ways: by offering programming that demonstrates your mission; by inviting an artist, performer or craftsperson to use your space; by showcasing a local food producer; or through many other creative, community-building activities.

As key members of your community, you best know the local talent whose work is most admired. NH Open Doors can help shine a spotlight on their work-as well as on your own.

NH Open Doors is becoming an event that visitors and residents look forward to, tell their friends about and build their fall schedules around. Last year, more than 150 locations across New Hampshire, covering every region and county, participated in NH Open Doors, and they reported anywhere between 10 and 300 visitors over the course of the weekend.

More information about NH Open Doors, including how to register and an updated list of participants, is available at www.nhopendoors.com.
