Nelson Cub Scout News
Nelson Cub Scouts

A revitalized Cub Scout Pack 530 invites all boys in Grades 1-5 to join and share in the fun of scouting this year.

Our pack, chartered to the Nelson Congregational Church, has been in existence almost 25 years, and has produced a prodigious number of successful young men, as well as a disproportionate number of Eagle Scouts.

After an eleven year break, Elaine Giacomo is once again the Cubmaster. The pack is also looking for interested adults who might be able to lend a hand as a leader or committee member.Anyone having any questions should contact Elaine at 847-9019

Coach Durand - 2011 BBQ
'Chef', not 'Coach' at the grill
The annual Nelson School BBQ and Open House went well last evening, thanks to the great weather and the fantastic turn-out of the parents and relatives of the Nelson School students.

The evening got underway with 'Chef' Durand holding court at the BBQ grill while mounds and mounds of delicious foods were brought to the table by the families and staff.

Students on the ceiling!
Following the BBQ, everyone gathered in a circle outdoors and the new Nelson School instructors were introduced.

Joy Birdsey-Smith also spoke a bit about the Nelson School PTO and urged parents to become involved.

Then, all were invited inside to visit the classrooms.  The students were thrilled to be able to point out their favorite aspects of school and their classrooms to their parents.

There were even students on the ceiling in Ms. Benner's class!

Lissa Schneckenburger in Concert
LissaWorld class fiddler and local hero Lissa Schneckenburger and Boston-based guitarist Bethany Waickman come to the Nelson Town Hall on Friday, October 7th for an 8 PM concert. Admission is $12/$9
(senior, youth & advance internet).

The traditional music of New England can be as warm and comforting as a winter fire or as potent and exhilarating as a summer thunderstorm. Fiddler and singer Lissa Schneckenburger is a master of both moods, a winsome, sweet-voiced singer who brings new life to old ballads and a skillful, dynamic fiddler who captures the driving rhythm and carefree joy of dance tunes old and new.

Whether playing for a folk club audience or a hall full of dancers, Lissa brings to the stage enthusiasm, energy, and the bright future of New England's musical traditions.

Rummage Sale October 15th
Nelson Congregational ChurchThe Nelson Congregational Church will hold a Rummage Sale on Saturday, October 15th from 9 until noon.

One of the great things that makes our rummage sale so unique is a "Donation Box" for your free-will offering when you purchase items.  So, take what you will use and give what you can.  Proceeds will be used to help local families in need.

This year we will be doing something a little different in that we will be accepting clothing for all seasons, and any clothing not taken during the Rummage Sale will be donated to InterAct, a KHS organization, to take on one of their mission trips.

For more information on the Rummage Sale, please email the church:  nelsonchurchucc@gmail.com

Anyone Up for a Halloween party?
Shortly after Halloween last year it was mentioned that this holiday was rather overlooked as an opportunity for everyone to have some spooky fun!  A group of parents and friends thought that Halloween this year could be different.

Plans and ideas are still rolling in and are being discussed, but, this group would like to know what YOU think.  Some folk met recently to discuss the idea.

Here's just a taste:
*  The Halloween event would be held at one location, allowing more children to participate (location to be determined)
*  Each and every child in each of our various neighborhoods would be encouraged to be a part of the evening's fun.
*  There would be food, or course, and treats for all of the children.
*  How about a costume contest for the different age groups?
*  Who has ideas about music, games, prizes, or a program of events?
*  Who is willing to be chaperones, or take part in other volunteer opportunities?  Who can tell spooky stories?

Anyone with any comments, ideas, suggestions, or a wish to volunteer is asked to contact Candyce  or  Joy.

So ... what do YOU think?

Hannaford Helps Schools
Hannaford Supermarket

Do a little "Hannaford Helps Schools" math - then imagine the possibilities!

From September 4 to December 3, 2011, when you purchase participating products in the Hannaford Helps Schools program, and you'll earn "school dollars" that our school can use to purchase sports equipment, art supplies, computers, books, musical instruments ... whatever our school needs most!

It's easy to donate - just deposit the school dollars into collection towers at our Keene Hannaford or submit them at your school.

Nelson School is a participant in the program, so look for our school on the collection tower.  You don't have to be a parent or relative of a Nelson School student to earn "school dollars".  Everyone who shops at Keene Hannaford can collect them and deposit them in the tower for Nelson School.

And, at the end of the program, our Keene Hannaford store will grant an additional $1,000 to the school in this area that earns the most money.  Nelson Elementary School has a long history of being the first.  We can do it again - with your help.

Mt Monadnock

You can help protect nearly 400 acres on the slopes of Mount Monadnock!

The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests is working to conserve 390 acres in Jaffrey and Marlborough that would add to more than 5,000 acres of protected land.  why, you may ask?

Protecting these lands will guarantee that important sections of active hiking trails will continue to be maintained and open to the public under Forest Society stewardship. One of the two parcels that we seek to conserve includes a key section of the Marlboro Trail, one of the main routes to Monadnock's summit.
The other parcel, which is surrounded on three sides by Forest Society land, abuts two class 6 roads that are heavily used as hiking trails, including part of a cross country ski trail that begins from the state park headquarters.

The conservation of these lands will also protect the panoramic forested mountain views of Mount Monadnock, which are widely visible from across the region.

With their forests and wetlands, these lands enhance the varied wildlife habitat that the region is renowned for. Several seasonal streams flow through one of these properties, converging into a single tributary that forms the headwaters of Mountain Brook, which supports a population of brook trout and other cold water fish. These lands also include several wetland complexes that provide important waterfowl nesting and feeding areas, as well as habitat for amphibians and reptiles. The waterways also serve as key travel corridors for mammals and birds, while the nut-producing trees provide food for black bear, deer, moose, turkeys, and many smaller animals.

The conservation of these lands will protect the panoramic mountain views of Mount Monadnock that are widely visible from across the region.

To ensure the permanent protection and stewardship of this land, we must raise $760,000.
Your gift of $50 or more by November 15 will guarantee that it will remain open to the public and continue to provide food and shelter for moose, bear, and other wildlife.
