Greetings!
Beginning with next week's issue, this Calendar of Events newsletter will be published at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoons, rather than the 12:30 p.m. as it is now. The change of publication time is to allow for a few more of the 'last minute' articles and event notifications to be announced.
It seems like there may have been a few Internet gremlins at work last week as many of our subscriber's newsletters bounced back to us. As this was more than just a handful of subscribers it's thought that it must have been the gremlins at work, warming up for some Halloween pranks! If you missed reading last week's issue, you can find it in the Newsletter Archives.
Shortly after Halloween last year it was mentioned that this holiday was rather overlooked as an opportunity for everyone to have some spooky fun! A group of parents and friends thought that Halloween this year could be different.
Plans and ideas are still rolling in and are being discussed, but, this group would like to know what YOU think.
Here's just a taste: 1. The event would take the place of the traditional door-to-door trick or treating 2. The Halloween event would be held at one location, allowing more children to participate (location to be determined) 3. Each and every child in each of our various neighborhoods would be encouraged to be a part of the evening's fun. 4. There would be food, or course, and treats for all of the children. 5. How about a costume contest for the different age groups? 6. Who has ideas about music, games, prizes, or a program of events? 7. Who is willing to be chaperones, or take part in other volunteer opportunities? Who can tell spooky stories?
Anyone with any comments, ideas, suggestions, or a wish to volunteer is asked to contact Candyce or Joy.
So ... what do YOU think?

 | A Year of Progress
| Moving In Step, a Community Project, met recently for their Annual Membership and Board meeting at the home of Dave Birchenough.
Moving In Step president, Rich Popovic brought the meeting to order and gave a short accounting of the progress made by your community group since last September. The Forum held in September, 2010 was singled out as the major achievement with its success due to the collaborative efforts of the townspeople of Nelson and Munsonville.
Quoting from the Minutes: 'Going ahead, Moving in Step has the challenge of staying relevant now that our "big event" is over. What is our role in the town and the surrounding communities from point onward? What can we do to ensure the viewpoints expressed at the Forum do not get lost? How can we take this community within a community we have built and expand it to include even more people? These challenges and many more lie waiting for us and I will be interested to see what our creative and dedicated group can do to meet them.'
New members were added to the Board of Directors for Moving In Step, these being: Maury Collins, Ruth Lemay, Karen Tolman, and Pamela White. Other Board Members include: Rich Popovic, president; Dave Birchenough, Treasurer; Karen Hersey, Secretary; Susan Hansel, Candyce Fulford, Kathy Schillemat, Rick Church, and Michael Iselin, members.
Chairpersons from the various Committees were invited to report on the progress made over the past year and to announce any plans and goals they may have for the year going forward. Dave Birchenough spoke on behalf of the Trails Committee, the chairperson not being present. Judith Putzel spoke on behalf of the Activities Committee, the chairperson not being present, and Candyce Fulford spoke on behalf of the Communications Committee. Each report was positive and filled with the achievements from the past year, as well as ideas for moving forward.
What can our community expect in the year ahead? Many new and exciting events for sure, and the implementation of many wonderful ideas.
We promise to keep you posted on the progress and the challenges that lie ahead. If you are interested in any of the Committees and what they do, there is a listing on the Moving In Step website, under the 'Community' link.

 | Lissa Schneckenburger in Concert | World class fiddler and local hero Lissa Schneckenburger and Boston-based guitarist Bethany Waickman come to the Nelson Town Hall on Friday, October 7th for an 8 PM concert. Admission is $12/$9 (senior, youth & advance internet). The traditional music of New England can be as warm and comforting as a winter fire or as potent and exhilarating as a summer thunderstorm. Fiddler and singer Lissa Schneckenburger is a master of both moods, a winsome, sweet-voiced singer who brings new life to old ballads and a skillful, dynamic fiddler who captures the driving rhythm and carefree joy of dance tunes old and new. Whether playing for a folk club audience or a hall full of dancers, Lissa brings to the stage enthusiasm, energy, and the bright future of New England's musical traditions.

 | Rummage Sale October 15th | The Nelson Congregational Church will hold a Rummage Sale on Saturday, October 15th from 9 until noon.
One of the great things that makes our rummage sale so unique is a "Donation Box" for your free-will offering when you purchase items. So, take what you will use and give what you can. Proceeds will be used to help local families in need.
This year we will be doing something a little different in that we will be accepting clothing for all seasons, and any clothing not taken during the Rummage Sale will be donated to InterAct, a KHS organization, to take on one of their mission trips.
For more information on the Rummage Sale, please email the church: nelsonchurchucc@gmail.com |
 | Hannaford Helps Schools
| Do a little "Hannaford Helps Schools" math - then imagine the possibilities! From September 4 to December 3, 2011, when you purchase participating products in the Hannaford Helps Schools program, and you'll earn "school dollars" that our school can use to purchase sports equipment, art supplies, computers, books, musical instruments ... whatever our school needs most!
It's easy to donate - just deposit the school dollars into collection towers at our Keene Hannaford or submit them at your school.
Nelson School is a participant in the program, so look for our school on the collection tower. You don't have to be a parent or relative of a Nelson School student to earn "school dollars". Everyone who shops at Keene Hannaford can collect them and deposit them in the tower for Nelson School.
And, at the end of the program, our Keene Hannaford store will grant an additional $1,000 to the school in this area that earns the most money. Nelson Elementary School has a long history of being the first. We can do it again - with your help.
