Pot Luck Supper Update
The Brick SchoolhouseOur first Pot Luck Supper for the season was held last Thursday evening, September 1st.  We were so very happy to have Lisa Sieverts in attendance.  As a group we asked her several questions concerning the recent Town Buildings Walk Through conducted last month by the Town Buildings Committee

Lisa happily answered all of our questions and remarked that quite a few townspeople had participated in the Walk Through.

It is hoped that a proposal can be obtained concerning the work that needs to be done to repair the character defining features of the Nelson Town Hall, the Brick Schoolhouse (the Nelson Town Office building - which is listed on the National Registry), and the Olivia Rodham Memorial Library.  And, it is hoped that pains will be taken to insure that the proposed work meets the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Historic Preservation.

Our next 1st Thursday Pot Luck Supper will be held on October 6th, at 6:30 pm.  Our discussions with the Town Buildings Committee and some invited guests will continue.  We hope you will mark this date on your calendar and plan to attend.
Library Book Sales Report
Many hands helped to make this year's library book sale a huge success. Thanks to the help of many Nelson residents, the sale on Old Home Day made $1343.75 to enable the Friends of the Olivia Rodham Library to donate $1000.00 for new books, pay for the Summer Reading Certificates for the children and provide money toward children's programming.

Books are donated year round so that there is always a good selection for sale. The Friends also encourage everyone to become members of the Friends knowing that the money goes back to benefit the library.

Carol Heath and Betsey Church, co-chairs, worked all summer sorting the donated and discarded books, DVDs, and videos with the help of Donna Kidd, Russ Thomas, Sandy Ferguson, Sara Sandberg and Susan Hansel. Lots of help was needed moving the books upstairs to the Town Hall, then boxing them and taking them back to the storage space beneath the library.  Rick Church, Pamela White, Owen Iselin, Joy Birdsey, Betsy Street, Eric Sandberg, Elaine Giacomo, Alex Mednick, Janie Lindberg, Barrie Tolman, Martha Collins, Maury Collins, Bob Jones, Trisha Jones, Ian Frederick, Dave Bower, Kyle Jones, Julie Meerifield, David Meneses, Andreas Meneses, Taylor Meerifield, Lee Germeroth, Josie Frederick, Jonathan Weis, Katie Kasper, and Josh Sturk gave a hand in one or all of those endeavors.

An organization called "Got Books" came recently to collect all the boxes of left-over books to distribute them to schools, prisons and homeless shelters. We encourage everyone to go to their web site Gotbooks.com to see how the books are distributed. A small group helped to load the truck: Jennifer Fraser, Kris Finnegan, Alie Weis, Donna Kidd, Linda Cates, Eric and Sara Sandberg. They did it in 8 minutes! What a great climax to a successful event.

Once again, thanks to all who participated, especially those who came and bought books, videos and DVDs!
Meals On Wheels
When Should I Contact Meals On Wheels?

Meals on Wheels are often needed for a short period of time after a hospitalization.  We have a very active group of volunteer drivers who deliver Meals On Wheels to several of our Nelson residents on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  These volunteers sign up for delivery days which fit into their schedule, and we do it all online and in emails!  We are perhaps the only town in the county whose Meals on Wheels program is coordinated completely online.

Meals on Wheels can help seniors and individuals with disabilities stay independent at home by providing good nutrition.

Typically, an outreach worker or nurse from Home Healthcare, Hospice and Community Services makes a home visit to explain the program and determine eligibility.  If you would like more information concerning becoming eligible for Meals On Wheels, you can visit the Services section of the HCSS website.

To download a copy of this month's menu, here's a pdf.
Volunteers are still needed to sign up for delivery on September 14th and September 30th.
MiS Quarterly Board Meeting
The Quarterly Board Meeting for Moving In Step will be held on Thursday evening, September 15th, at 7:00 p.m.  Once again, Dave Birchenough had generously offered to host this meeting.

All MiS Board Members are encouraged to attend, as well as any Committee Chairs who may wish to do so.  If there are any Committee Chairs who may be planning to request funding from MiS before our December Quarterly meeting, then these Committee Chairs are strongly encouraged to attend, as the Board will be discussing the application process.
