THE GAME OF VILLAGE
a letter from Mike Iselin
June 2011 Dear Friends:
Forty years ago my mother Cia Iselin and I conceived the idea of organizing grade school children to play a simulation game. Village '71 was the result: a Nelson, N.H. Summer camp in which 8-13 year olds exercised their collective mind to make theater and build scale models with their hands -- both at once. Some local folks have heard the jargon that evolved: "peeps," "minifairs," "homesteaders," etc. Now "The Game" has been played far and wide and in many forms. Children immerse themselves in it and are inspired and learn multi-dimentionally as they create new personalities, buildings, landscapes, careers, and eventually stories in miniature. Instead of clicking their way through someone else's "great graphics" and preconceived plots, in Village the story unfolds as "homesteaders" invent a society of their own, with unpredicted events and a multitude of twists and challenges. It's real rather than virtual. The Game of Village is being played at Marlboro Elementary School right now.
A year ago we reconstituted the board of The Game of Village, Inc. (a nonprofit) and envisioned returning the summer camp to our area, since Sue Martin stopped offering it in New Boston. We are sure it will always be popular and have sanguinely geared up for the revival at Mackenzie's "Village Field Farm" in Nelson Village July 2011! But, help - there is a problem. Only a few kids are signed up because money is so tight. Inquiring around I find out that kids everywhere are missing summer camp and other enrichment experiences this summer because their parents can't afford them. The central theme of The Game of Village, in summer camp, school, or other social formats, is creating community, so it has to be a natural for Nelson. Our town too is working to find new identity in this day of globalized society. I'm asking friends and neighbors to help us seize the opportunity by
*suggesting a likely child aged 9-14 who can afford $500 and might like to be a "homesteader" *sponsoring a child (we know at least fourteen already) who needs several hundred dollars to sign up *suggesting another friend or neighbor who might sponsor a homesteader

Greetings!
To the men who raised us, taught us how to fish and how to fiddle, how to ride a bike (two-wheeler or motorcycle), gave us a deep appreciation of the land and the knowledge needed to bring forth its bounty ... to the men who loved our moms ...

 | Nelson Elementary is a New Hampshire Blue Ribbon School
| |

If you have "Liked" I Love Nelson NH on Facebook, then you already know about the honor that was recently given to Nelson Elementary School by the New Hampshire Department of Education.
"On Wednesday, June 8th, the New Hampshire Department of Education awarded Blue Ribbon School status to Nelson Elementary School.
"Each year this honor is bestowed upon three New Hampshire Schools. We (Nelson Elementary) earned this recognition because of our consistently high test scores and the closing of the achievement gap with the children we teach." ~ Principal Sheila Vara
You can send your congratulations to Nelson Elementary School via email. We are so proud of all of the faculty, staff, and each of the students at Nelson Elementary! Also read: Ms. Vara's end of the year Newsletter |

Shifts are from 8:30 pm to 12:45 am, 12: 30 am to 5:00 am, and clean up after that, possibly until 10 am. |
