Greetings! Ever wonder how legends get started? Take a glance at the photo above. Do you see the golf ball? As legend would have it ...
"It was in the month of April 2011, and Spring just seemed to ever arrive. An enterprising lady by the name of Sara decided that enough was enough. Spring needed to be here and she knew just what to do about it!
"By April 15th, the ice had barely loosened its winter grip around the edges of Granite Lake here in Nelson, so she whistled for her trusty kayak and put a golf ball in her pocket. But, this was not just any ordinary golf ball. This was Sara's favorite, "Winter Buster"!
"Paddling cautiously along the shoreline, Sara gripped Winter Buster tightly in her hand, closed her eyes, made a wish and a prayer, and threw that golf ball as far as she could! A mighty crack appeared! Then another. And still another! Could it be that Sara and "Winter Buster" was the cure to a very long winter?
"Now, you all know that I am not one to spin yarns, or to tell stories that might not be true. So, cross my heart and believe me when I tell you that in just two more days, the ice was finally out on Granite Lake for good and Spring was on its way.
And that's the legend of Sara and "Winter Buster."

 | Moving Forward - A Celebration
|
On Saturday evening, April 16, a celebration was held in Town Hall to mark the six month anniversary of the Nelson Community Forum held at Apple Hill last September. The evening began with socializing and a finger food potluck. The committees formed at the Community Forum gave brief updates on their activities.
Then on to the main attraction - music from some of Nelson's finest.
John Cucchi led off with some excellent guitar and vocal work. Young Kaitlin Schillemat sang beautifully. Next up was Alouette Iselin with some great songs for sing along. Warmed up by Alouette, the sing along continued with an excellent performance by Allison Aldrich and Hunt Smith, backed by Tom Murray on bass.
A good time was had by all.

 | Lunches Needed
| The re-building of Mary Des Rosiers' home is in full swing! A crew of 4-5 people are working almost daily to build the new house. These workers need lunch! If you would be willing to pack lunch for the crew (one time or occasionally), please call Amy Bright at 827-9808 or Allison Aldrich at 209-3304.
If you can pack a lunch but can't deliver it, arrangements can be made. Thank you!

 | Coming SOON!
| Meals On Wheels will be starting in Nelson in early summer, but your help is needed to get the program rolling!
Volunteers are needed to deliver noontime meals to the homes of Nelson seniors on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. So far eight volunteers have stepped forward, but we're looking for at least four more. So, if this is something you've been thinking about doing, follow the link below.
Deliveries will typically take an hour and a half to two hours time, depending on the number of deliveries. People who are interested use their own vehicle and must attend a two hour training session to become a volunteer.
Volunteers may choose to deliver once a month or more; substitutes are also needed. The Nelson service will be part of the Cheshire County Meals On Wheels program sponsored by Home Healthcare, Hospice and Community Services (HCS).

 | Remember to Register Fido!
| It's April, and time once again to make that trip to the Town Offices to register your dog. As of this year, the Town of Nelson will no longer be providing the "Inventory Report", that nice little piece of paper that we all would receive this month, get to fill out, and return. It's proven not to be cost effective.
In any case, the laws have not changed. All dogs residing in the community are required to be registered in April. You can take care of this very quickly by visiting Teri Upton (Town Tax Collector) at the Nelson Town Offices.

May Day Celebration 2011
|
| |
Come join us for the annual May Day Celebration.
We'll come together at about 10:30 am on Sunday, May 1st, on the Town Common, some to dance and others to visit with those we may have not seen since the first snowflake fell. The children are delighted with the bright colors of the May Pole ribbons, waiting their turn to help weave the ribbons when it's time for the May Pole Dance. But first, we are treated to the trumpet sounding of Jack In the Green as he heralds the arrival of another beautiful Spring in Nelson.
