Weekly Community Quote
"Without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It's important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It's the way in which we ourselves grow and develop."

Planning the 4th Annual PTO Auction
Nelson PTO AuctionIt's that time of year.  Time to plan for THE school event of season ... the 4th Annual PTO Auction!  This community event is the largest fund raiser and has in the past financed improvements to the school playground and purchased a brand new slide and brand new swings.

We, the members of the Nelson School PTO, need your help to pull off another great auction.  We need your donations!  This is a great time to begin those spring cleaning chores and donate to the auction.  Email the Nelson PTO for a donation form.

If you'd like to help get this auction 'in gear', we'd love for you to join us at our next meeting, 6:45 pm on Monday, February 7th, in the Multi-Purpose Room.  Whatever your skill or talent, we'll be very thankful for your help.
Nelson Strings
by Val Van Meier

Grins, giggles and excited chatter greeted Sarah Kim, the Nelson Strings teacher on the first day of lessons.  Ten eyes looked eagerly at six cases sitting on a table. Minutes later Nelson Elementary School's first violin students were learning proper standing position, the name and function of parts of the violin and how to care for and hold their instruments.  Five students are learning finger positions, pizzicato (also known as plucking the strings) and their first song.

Guest Speakers Featured @ Pot Luck
Join us on Thursday, February 3rd at the 1st Thursday Pot Luck to hear Susan Ashworth of HCSS and the Reverend Dawn Garrett-Larsen speak on the possibility of bringing the Meals on Wheels program to Nelson.

Meals on WheelsThe Pot Luck Supper begins at 6:30 pm in the Henry Melville Fellowship Hall of the Nelson Congregational Church.  It's always a fun gathering of friends and neighbors who bring lots of good food to share.

At this Pot Luck we will be mindful of those in our community who could benefit greatly from a program such as Meals on Wheels.

Susan and Dawn both see a need for this service and wish to discover if there is a potential volunteer base to help with such a program.  As a community, we are aware of some who might qualify/need this service.

The Meals on Wheels Program is designed to provide nutritious hot meals daily to anyone in need of them delivered to their home.  Tonight's program will focus on learning about the program and seeking out those interested parties who might serve as organizers and volunteers.

We hope you will join us at this very special 1st Thursday Pot Luck.
Benefit for Mary Desrosiers February 5th
Benefit Contra Dance
On November 30, 2010, a devastating fire destroyed the home of internationally-known dance caller and musician Mary DesRosiers in Harrisville, NH. All of the contents of the house were destroyed.

On February 5th, the Monadnock Folklore Society will present a benefit contra dance.  The benefit will take place at the Peterborough Town Hall at 7:30 pm.

Admission is $10 with all proceeds going to Mary DesRosiers.

For information about related benefits, visit http://www.marydesrosiers.com.  Read her story and the blog.
Nelson School's Winter Concert
Barring the arrival of yet another Wednesday snowstorm, the Nelson School Winter Concert will be held at the Nelson Town Hall on Wednesday evening, February 9th, at 6:30 pm.

This evening's performers will present an original arrangement of "It's Raining" on voice, recorder other instruments; a "three-star" (Elvis times three, that is!) number on the water cycle; a Native American round about the beauty which surrounds us; French gardening songs; and a wide variety of other numbers that highlight student accomplishments on voice and instrument.
