MBOT Featured in Toronto Star
Mississauga Board of Trade (MBOT) President and CEO, Sheldon Leiba was featured in the Toronto Star article "Hurontario Street: multiple personalities" on August 7th, 2012. The article discusses the identity of Hurontario St. (or lack of) and what opportunities it could offer the city in the future.
What's missing is a "vision for Hurontario to be a 'great' street" that would help define Mississauga as a "world class city,'' says Sheldon Leiba, president and CEO of the Mississauga Board of Trade.
"The street has developed in a piecemeal way as our community evolved from a series of disconnected villages to a large city. It does not reflect the high standards and features of what a 'Main St.' should be - aesthetically pleasing, pedestrian-friendly, abundance of mixed uses - a place where people want to be and go.''
However, Leiba notes, the street does host one of the city's most recognized and internationally lauded developments, the curvy condo complex (officially "Absolute Towers'') better known as the Marilyn Monroe buildings.
The 50- and 56-storey undulating towers were designed in 2006 by Beijing-based architect Ma Yansong and his firm, MAD Architects.
"It is amazing how much the architechural [sic] design of a building can become an iconic symbol for a city,'' says Leiba. "The Absolute Towers is such an example of what a higher standard of creativity can do to make your city globally identifiable.''
