Economy growing at gradual pace says top economist Craig Alexander at Mississauga Board of Trade event
Mississauga's business community gained valuable insight into the current economic environment as Mississauga Board of Trade welcomed Craig Alexander, Chief Economist with TD Financial Group, to the third annual Economic Outlook Breakfast on Thursday, November 3, 2011.
Surpassing expectations, this sold-out event was held at Mississauga Convention Centre, and was sponsored by TD Commercial Banking and Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC). After a brief introduction by TD's District Vice-President, Mississauga Branch, Dero Sabatini, Craig began his presentation. He first commented on the global recession and recovery, and then focused on the U.S., ending his remarks with his thoughts on Canada's economy.
Alexander spoke to the fiscal crisis in Europe, mentioning that it was, "not a simple story to tell." He went on to speak about the dire financial situation currently plaguing Greece, a possible bailout and the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF).
"Greece cannot pay their bills or depreciate their currency," said Alexander. "They (Greece) are caught in a vicious downfall and will have to default approximately 71% of their debt." He also stated it is difficult to predict what will happen in Greece in the future.
After speaking on the world economy and leading emerging markets following the recession, he then commented on the U.S. and Canada, specifically touching on issues with growth and the unique recovery process we are facing.
Alexander spoke about the current state of the United States Government. "The problem is not the U.S. deficit; it's the projection of where the country will be in the next few years if they don't take action."
Predicting that the U.S. economy will grow at a gradual pace, Alexander shared his thoughts on the impact businesses will face, as the economy picks up.
He then mentioned his largest concern; the U.S. housing market. Sales are slowly rising but the real problem is supply. "Home prices are falling but due to the high number of U.S. residents defaulting on mortgages, they are riskier to give out, which impairs willingness to lend."
Alexander discussed the future growth of the economy, saying that, "it will grow at a moderate pace, similar to last year." He also touched on the Canadian exports tied to the U.S., stating that the Canadian dollar could fall, but in five years, currency could be at par.
Stating that Canadian governments are turning their attention to deficit fighting, Alexander added that, "Canada is not adding to the economy/growth, but won't see a drag like the U.S. or Europe."
Wrapping up his speech, Alexander touched on some key take away points: the European fiscal crisis is not resolved, U.S. is facing fiscal challenges, inflation is becoming a risk in developing nations and, the economic recovery is advanced nations is very fragile.
"How do businesses deal with this environment? Don't let it paralyze you; you cannot base your plans off of the U.S. or Europe."
Some other points included:
- U.S. recovery spending halt
- Fractured state of Republican Party in U.S.
- European fiscal crisis problems
- Fragility of U.S. economy and housing market
- Comparison between U.S. and Japanese economies
Members and guests were then encouraged to ask questions and share concerns. Some topics included: the standard of living in China, possible export opportunities and the likelihood of a political shift in the U.S.

MBOT, BDO, BDC and RICC host
"Competitiveness Starts With Innovative Entrepreneurs" luncheon
Mississauga Board of Trade (MBOT), along with Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), BDO, and Research Innovation Commercialization Centre (RICC), hosted a Small Business Week luncheon event, focusing on informing and inspiring small-to-medium sized businesses to become more competitive and successful through innovation.
Ian MacFadden, Vice President, Financing & Consulting, GTA West for BDC and 2011 MBOT Chair, welcomed guests with opening remarks emphasizing the importance of innovation in business and introduced Keynote Speaker, Jene-Rene Halde.
Mr. Halde discussed how innovative entrepreneurs can shape the future of business and their individual companies. Local entrepreneur and panelist, Larry Cox, Polaris Transportation, was praised for innovative thinking, which created new products and business opportunities. More importantly, Mr. Halde said these products and opportunities solved problems people didn't even know they had; a point that was stressed during the keynote speech. Mr. Halde highlighted the importance for business to be proactive; "you can't wait for customers to come to you with problems...you must see it before they do." "This was one of the key advantages Steve Jobs had as an entrepreneur," said Mr. Halde. "He knew what we wanted before we knew we wanted it."
Robert Cherun of UCIT Online Security Inc. and Christohper Johnsen, BDO Solutions, were also panelists for the event, facilitated by John Switzer, Chair of RICC.
One suggestion for business made by Mr. Halde was to focus on one specialty your company will be good at and become a world-class competitor. Mr. Halde left the event with one piece of advice for everyone, "Think Big, Act Small, Fail Fast, and Learn Rapidly."
Paul Boucher, Associate, BDO, brought the event to a close, commenting on the day's topic: innovation. "What we see is that innovation results in many great successes but also many fails. But if you never try, you won't succeed." Asking the crowd what they had learned, Boucher stressed the importance of taking away the fact that we need to choose to innovate and keep innovation as the core of our business. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
MBOT Seminar, "Hiring Immigrants Makes Good Business Sense," with Mayor Naheed Nenshi, Mayor of Calgary, a great success
On October 26, Mississauga Board of Trade (MBOT) hosted, "Hiring Immigrants Makes Good Business Sense," at The Living Arts Centre. The event, part of MBOT's ITSinMississauga program, was funded by the Ontario Government through an initiative of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) and featured keynote speaker, Naheed Nenshi, Calgary's 36th mayor.
MBOT President & CEO, Sheldon Leiba, welcomed members and guests to the event, stressing the importance of effective employment integration of immigrants to our local and national economy.
Mayor Nenshi, a strong advocate for international professionals, stressed the importance for an open and welcoming society and cited it as the key reason Calgary has been successful - quashing myths that it is due to the tar sands, "The core of success of a city is the willingness to work together, to ensure everyone is successful," said Nenshi.
He spoke to the importance of focusing on language training to overcome barriers, adding that, "change is very possible," but affirmed that skills should be the main focus. As an example, Mayor Nenshi directly related to personal experience with an international professional whose language was not the best, but based on his skills he was recommended to the Mayor's office as a temporary employee. Turns out the gentleman was a Mayor in his native land of Columbia. It is thanks to such local programs that enable internationally trained professionals reach their true potential.
Local business leaders in HR, Ellen Austin, BDC and Laura Artibello, Mailennium, echoed Mayor Nenshi's message. Ellen pointed out that we exist in a global, not local, world and urged all HR professionals to be on top of global HR trends, noting that international professionals bring a wealth of knowledge to our businesses. Laura finished off the business panel with the message that "we benefit from each other's skills & expertise."

Buy America Causes Concern for Business in Canada
Mississauga Board of Trade (MBOT) echoes The Ontario Chamber of Commerce's deep concern about the negative consequences of a proposed Buy American provision in President Obama's American Jobs legislation.
In order to contribute to a sustainable trade relationship and foster a prosperous economy on both sides of the border, MBOT believes it is necessary for the Canadian and American governments to reach an agreement on the Buy American provision in the American Jobs Act.
MBOT calls on the Canadian and U.S. governments to reach an agreement that will promote free and open bilateral trade and help revitalize the economies on both sides of the border.
The OCC has drafted a submission to Ambassador Ron Kirk in response to the legislation which can be viewed here. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Discussion Paper Thinks Differently About Low-Skilled Jobs
A new discussion paper released by the Ontario Literacy Coalition suggests that as a result of emerging technology, increased productivity and consumer expectations, jobs that were once assumed to be 'entry-level' or 'low-skilled' are under-going massive changes which require new sets of skills.
Menial No More: A Discussion Paper on Advancing our Workforce through Digital Skills proposes that in order for the current labour market to thrive, radical changes are needed to enhance the skills of workers in these positions.
While one solution to this problem lies in training, workforce training systems are based on jobs that were once assumed to be 'low-skilled' and have not been updated to reflect the changing needs of the economy. The report suggests that Ontario's adult education system could be enhanced by incorporating digital skills, basic science and job-specific training into essential skills education.
Other jurisdictions are finding success by mixing essential skills, with digital skills and science, technology, engineering and math to bridge the gap between the education system and the 21st century digital economy. Results to date have been positive with workers moving to employment more quickly and earning higher wages.
Menial No More invites us to think differently about how employer groups, government and the training community can design an education and training system that supports the growth of Ontario's workers and key sectors. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
