No Excuses took 18 months to write, but a lifetime of experience in life and leadership. I had planned to announce it properly along with my new, improved website via newsletter way before now. But the website is still "under construction" and I'm still wrestling my email contacts lists to the ground.
So I decided to follow my own advice. Number #3 of the 9 Ways reminds me to use what I've got:
My publisher, Seal Press, made a very cool postcard that gives you a sneak preview of the book. Please enjoy and share it far and wide.
- People like you, who understand stuff happens, or doesn't, and are very forgiving. Thank you. And please help me out here: what do you do when the linchpin of your project is behind schedule?
- A cheering section of supportive sisters at SheWrites.com, where I'm chronicling my "Countdown to Publication." Go there if you want more gory details. And definitely go join up if you're a woman and a writer--a richer trove of resources for writers can't be found anywhere.
- My passionate belief that this is a hopeful and historic moment for women. From the boardroom to the bedroom, nobody is holding us back now except ourselves. The 9 Ways give specific power tools and tips women can use to lead unlimited lives. I'm looking forward to sharing them all with you over the next months with this newsletter and on my website and Heartfeldt blog.

I'm usually a pop culture illiterate, but these two situations begged me to write about them. Drop me a note and let me know your thoughts on them:

Aniston-O'Reilly Tiff Mirrors Gender Disparities on Women's Equality Day
August 26 wasn't your run of the mill Women's Equality Day; it was the 90th anniversary of the 19th amendment to the Constitution giving all American women the right to vote. Opponents of women's suffrage charged it would lead to promiscuity and the demise of the patriarchal family. The underlying culture wars continue, while larger equality issues go unaddressed. On 'Friday Night Lights,' a Brave and Honest Abortion Story
Some human stories repeat themselves in every generation, sex and pregnancy being one. But how often do you see an honest TV portrayal of a young woman considering her options and choosing abortion in a straightforward, mature way, with empathy rather than hype? Kudos to FNL for their courage--and their public service--in telling Becky's story. Writing this essay required me to tell my story too. Read it in the Washington Post. |
