Learn More About Urban Prep's 100% College Acceptance Rate

Dear Friend,
When we launched Urban Prep, the country's first all-boys public charter high school, we always knew that the world would be watching.
Now, five years later, the country's first all-boys charter high school has become the country's first all-boys charter public school network. Our three schools are impacting students all across Chicago and we are looking forward to further growth across the country.
A key element to Urban Prep's success has been our interest in learning from other excellent schools and sharing our promising practices with educators. After all, the real promise of charter schools lies in their ability to incubate new ideas and share those ideas so that they can be implemented more broadly. A new section of this newsletter titled "Speaking-UP" describes our efforts in sharing the work of Urban Prep. I encourage you to take a look at it. You can also Follow UP and Keep UP with us via Facebook and Twitter.
As always, thanks for your ongoing support. I hope you know that your generosity is impacting more than just Urban Prep; you're helping change the educational landscape of this entire country.
We Believe,

Tim King

Friends & Partners Help UP "Discover Our City"

Juwuan Warren, Class of 2014, takes in a birds-eye view
atop the Tribune Tower during Discovering Our City
|
Recently, Urban Prep students from each campus participated in our annual Discovering Our City field trip. Over forty businesses, not-for-profit organizations, and cultural & educational institutions across the Chicagoland area came together to help make the event a success.
In groups of 20, students visited sites such as The Art Institute of Chicago, City Hall, IMC Financial Markets, Perkins Coie LLP, and U.S. Cellular Field. At the locations, students received guided tours, engaged in career focused discussions with employees, and even worked on small projects designed to give them a glimpse into a day in the life of professionals.
Because many students never get a chance to venture outside of their communities, Discovering our City provides a valuable opportunity for them to explore new parts of the city, meet folks working in exciting industries, and broaden their worldview. To read more about Discovering Our City, view pictures from the event, and see a list of all the organizations that participated, please click here.

Ed Chief Praises UP at Teach For America Event
| | |
Secretary of Education Arne Duncan gave Urban Prep a big "shout-out" during his closing address at the Teach for America (TFA) 20th Anniversary Summit in DC recently. To the delight of more than 10,000 on-lookers--including Urban Prep TFA corps members--Secretary Duncan spoke of Urban Prep's successin gaining a 100% college acceptance rate.
Among other things, Duncan mentioned the culture of achievement and high expectations that have become a hallmark of Urban Prep schools. Hats off to TFA for twenty years of success and hats off to Secretary Duncan for continuing to support programs that work--like TFA and Urban Prep!

Basketball Team Soars to New Heights
| | |
This is the time of year when we all go mad for college basketball, but the Urban Prep Englewood Varsity team whipped us into a frenzy recently with their own version of March Madness.
When the Lions faced off with Hinsdale Central in IHSA Regional playoff action, they earned a victory and a spot in UP history, becoming the first-ever Urban Prep athletic team to win a state playoff game. Led by Senior guard Damien Mack's 23 points, the Lion's notched a 72-62 victory in the historic match up. The Lions were eventually ousted from tournament play, but we're proud that they took us further than we have ever been on the court. Congratulations Lions on a fantastic season! |

Class of 2010 Alum Carlton Yarber has been a busy young man as of late. As if he were not busy enough studying Interactive Arts and Media at Columbia College, Yarber recently found time to design the cover of Harambee, the college's African-American Cultural Affairs newsletter. In an interview published in that issue, Yarber reflects on his time at Urban Prep and explains how his high school experience prepared him for college and life.
