You Can Help Urban Prep Students Discover Our City
Several years ago, during a conversation with a group of students, one told me that he'd never been downtown; another said he'd never been in a "real" office; and a third said he'd never seen the Lakefront. From that conversation, Discovering Our City (DOC) was born.
Each year, we take our students to "discover" Chicago. During this all-school field trip, students travel in small groups of about twenty-five to cultural institutions, businesses, Chicago landmarks, universities, nonprofits, etc. The goal of DOC is to expose our students to the wonders that Chicago has to offer and allow them to be inspired by the people--like you--who are making our great city work.
Please consider hosting a group of students for this year's DOC on Wednesday, February 23, 2011. Perhaps you work in or are affiliated with a law firm, bank, museum, hospital, sports stadium, tourist attraction, university, studio, nonprofit organization, etc. Or maybe you know about a really cool building or other Chicago landmark that would be worth seeing.
Since this year's DOC occurs in February, your company/organization might consider hosting our students as part of its Black History Month activities.
To host a group, we ask that you spend 90 minutes (from 10:30am to Noon) on February 23 with the students. In the past, students have had tours, enjoyed "career-day" type panel discussions, met with organizational leaders, worked on projects, etc. while on DOC.
If you are interested in hosting a group, please click here to complete the DOC host form. Please this email to anyone who you think might be willing to host a group of Urban Prep students. Feel free to contact me or DOC coordinator Troy Boyd (tboyd@urbanprep.org; 312-276-0259, ext. 1113) with any ideas, suggestions or questions about DOC.
We hope that you will be able to help Urban Prep students Discover Our City.
Thanks!

About Urban Prep Academies
Urban
Prep
Academies was founded in 2002 by Tim King and a group of
African-American education,
business and civic leaders who wanted to improve the
educational
opportunities available to urban
boys. In 2005, this nonprofit organization was approved under Chicago's
Renaissance 2010 initiative to
open Urban Prep Charter Academy for Young Men-- Englewood Campus. Urban
Prep
is the country's first charter
public high school for boys. Since accepting its first class in the fall
of
2006, Urban Prep has been recognized internationally for its success in
improving
the academic, social and emotional development of urban young men. In addition to the Englewood campus, Urban Prep operates two other schools: the East Garfield Park Campus and the South Shore Campus. 100%
of Urban Prep's graduates have been admitted to college.
