Dear Friend,
Welcome to The UPdate, our new format for delivering
you monthly news on Urban Prep. As you will
read in this month's issue of The UPdate, one word has come up a lot at Urban Prep in the
last few weeks: Inspiration.
Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts selected
Urban Prep to be featured as part of GMA's "Be Inspired" series. Harry
Caray's Restaurant was inspired to celebrate our students' gaining
admission to college by hosting Signing Day. Nike was inspired to
create a sneaker in honor of our first graduating class. And the clothes
our students (and their dates) wore to their first Senior Prom required
A LOT of inspiration (and more than a little courage)!!
Everyday, I am inspired by our students. Their promise and potential
are so incredible to me. But I'm also inspired by you and countless
other supporters of Urban Prep. Without people being engaged and
involved in what we're doing, our students' success would not be
possible. You help our students prove that with hard work,
determination, and support, success will come. In short, you help our
students believe. And lest you doubt the limits of your inspiration,
Urban Prep senior Tyler Beck made clear how inspired he is when he said
on Good Morning America: "Don't tell me the sky's the limit when I
know that there are footprints on the moon."
We Believe,
Tim

Seniors Choose Colleges at Signing Day

| Harry Caray's Hosts & Nike Surprises at Urban Prep's College Signing DayHarry Caray in UP gear.

The bronze bust of iconic Chicago Cubs announcer Harry Caray
sported a red and gold striped tie and a UP cap to join in the celebration of Urban Prep's College Signing Day.
Taking a cue from the sports world, the
students at Urban Prep participated in a College Signing Day luncheon
hosted by Harry Caray's Italian Steakhouse. At the event, each student stood to
publicly announce and don a baseball cap from the college or university he will attend, signed the
Credimus Book, and received a
special surprise from Nike.

 | Signing Day kicked off with Urban Prep founder and CEO
Tim King welcoming the packed house of students and supporters. Among
the celebrity guests at the event were Chicago Cubs
legend Ernie Banks, multimedia personality Richard Roeper, Harry
Caray's Restaurant
Group managing partner Grant DePorter, Dutchie Caray, and former Chicago
Bear Chris
Zorich.
Cecil Coleman & Ernest Sawyer along with several other members of the Midwesterners,
a social fraternal organization of professional African-American men, presented
Urban Prep with a $10,000 donation.
Later, Chris Zorich delivered an
emotional keynote address praising the graduating class for displaying the
dedication, commitment and focus that define Urban Prep students, and urging
them to continue pursuing excellence in college. UP's future Fighting Illini Cameron Barnes, Reggie Hinds and Esko Peterson at Signing Day with Karina Padilla from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
 | The highlight of the
afternoon came when each of 107 graduates listed the colleges to which they
have been admitted, and publicly declared which school they've decided to attend
in the fall. Upon announcing their college choice, the students put on a hat from that school. Representatives from
Denison University, Georgetown University, Indiana State University, Northwestern University,
Purdue University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Rochester, and University
of Virginia were on hand to cheer on students who would be attending their schools. UNCF and the Gates Millennium Scholarship Program also attended in support of their students.

 | commitments, the mood reached a fever pitch when Nike Central Territory General Manager Reginald Hamlett and his colleagues unveiled a custom designed Urban Prep sneaker featuring Urban Prep's Crest, Creed and school colors. Making the moment even more special, Nike announced that they have only produced these commemorative shoes as gifts to the members of Urban Prep's Class of 2010.
In all, Urban Prep students have been admitted to over 100 colleges and received close to $4 million in scholarships and grants. For Signing Day pictures please click here. To read the Chicago Tribune's coverage of the event, please click here.
Big thanks to Harry Caray's for sponsoring the event (for a special offer from Harry Caray's, see below) and to Nike for honoring our students.

Red Carpet Glitz & Glamour at Prom |
| Seniors Shine at First Prom
UP Senior Anthony Hubbard and date enter Prom.
 | This has been a year of incredible firsts at Urban Prep including Urban Prep's first Senior Prom.
While the young
men of Urban Prep are always dressed to impress in school issued blazers
and
ties, their suits and tuxedos dazzled all on-lookers.
When Seniors arrived at the Doubletree Hotel ballroom, they were announced with their dates and walked the red carpet as their classmates applauded and the "paparazzi's" cameras flashed. Following this grand entrance, seniors enjoyed an elaborate buffet and an evening of dancing.

Urban
Prep Academies was founded in 2002 by Tim King and a group of African-American education,
business and civic leaders who wanted to improve the
educational
opportunities available to urban
boys. In 2005, this nonprofit organization was approved under Chicago's Renaissance 2010 initiative to
open Urban Prep Charter Academy for Young Men-Englewood Campus. Urban Prep
Charter Academy is the country's first and the state of Illinois' only charter
public high school for boys. Since accepting its first class in the fall of
2006, Urban Prep has been recognized internationally for its success in improving
the academic, social and emotional development of urban young men. Urban Prep
opened an additional school in East Garfield Park in Fall 2009 and will open a third in Fall 2010.
