The Cattery Newsletter - The Scratching PostSeptember 2011

Dear Friends,

Wow! What a month!  We are very excited to announce that we had our 1000th adoption!  We are thankful that this monumental adoption could be Hank, an adult cat that had been at the shelter since he was a kitten!
As if our 1000th adoption wasn't enough, we got a big dose of inpiration by attending American Pets Alive and Austin Pets Alive first No-Kill Convention.  These groups worked with the city of Austin to begin saving over 90% of animals that reach the city pound.  Before their efforts, about 50% of animals entering the city shleter were euthanized.  Last month an astounding 96% were adopted or transferred to rescues.  We learned about how they accomplished this seemingly unattainable goal and hope to use the tools we learned to increase Corpus Christi's save rate (currently at a dismal 10%).

We are also busy getting the last minute details together for our Oktoberfest this Saturday!  Help us celebrate all we have accomplished in the past, and all we will accomplish in the future!
Sincerely,

Samantha Person
Shelter Director

Kitty of The Month
Suzie

Suzie is a very special kitty.  She was surrendered to the shelter when her mom went into hospice for cancer.  Suzie loved her mom so much that she grieved for several months and wouldn't let staff or volunteers touch her.  One day she decided to join the world again and has been a darling girl ever since.  That was 3 1/2 years ago.  Suzie has been adopted and returned twice.  Her first adopter returned her because she could no longer take care of her.  The second adopter returned her because she was too affectionate and she was was looking for a cat that is more of a loner.

Suzie has two little quirks that keep her from getting adopted.  She has an enlarged heart.  She takes 1/2 of a tiny pill each day and is very easy to medicate.  She also has to be an only cat.  Suzie is a princess and is above sharing the spot light with other felines.  She doesn't mind sharing her home with a dog.

She is, as stated above, very affectionate.  She will want to hang out with you at all times and keep you company.  She loves laps and isn't afraid to hop up in an empty one.  She also loves to talk and share her opinion on just about anything!  Suzie is about 10 years old and her adoption fee has been sponsored.

This girl deserves a real home.  If you aren't able to adopt, please share Suzie's story with your friends!

About The Cattery

The Cattery offers an alternative to traditional animal shelters in providing a no-kill, cage-free haven for homeless, abused, or abandoned cats.  From there, we seek permanent, loving homes for these animals.  In addition, our organization promotes public awareness regarding the value of animals and their welfare, the dangers of pet overpopulation, and the benefit of quality human-animal companionship.

Virtu-Adoption Program

The Cattery's Virtu-Adoption program is a great way to support The Cattery with an ongoing monthly donation!

There are six cats in the program that will likely live out their lives at the shelter because of medical needs, age or temperament.  You pick the kitty you want to support and each month you will get an email and picture of your kitty telling the insider secrets of life in the shelter and general shelter news!  Your donation goes into the general operating fund which ensures all off the current kitties in the program have their forever home at The Cattery and that thousands of other cats will have a temporary home while they wait to be adopted!  Sign up HERE to help us continue providing our cage-free haven!

Volunteer!

The Cattery always needs volunteers!  Find out more about our volunteer program by clicking HERE! Under the volunteer tab you can also fill out an application!
Volunteer orientation is Saturday, October 8th - 10:30am for youth volunteers and 11:30am for adult volunteers!
