The Cattery
The Cattery Newsletter - The Scratching PostAugust 2010
Dear Friends,

We continue to be astounded at the number of adoptions we have had this summer and are so thankful that so many of our kitties are finding their forever homes!  That's the good news.  The bad news is, donations have been down this summer.  Things are slowly picking up, but we need so much more help to continue with the standard of care we feel our kitties deserve.  Did you know that before every cat is adopted, they are spayed or neutered, are current on vaccines, have been tested for Feline Aids and Feline Leukemia, are microchipped, treated for parasites and come with a 10 day health certificate, a starter bag of Hill's Science Diet and 30 days of pet insurance?  The adoption fee only covers a portion of the cost.  Now include any treatments if they come to the shelter with an illness or some sort of injury.  On top of that there's the operating expenses of the shelter - food, utilities, electricity, office supplies, LITTER(!!), cleaning supplies, etc.  It's enough to make your head spin! We also have so many plans for programs that will help the kitties of our community even more, but haven't been able to get them off the ground.  Please consider a donation - wether it's a one time donation, a monthly donation, or an item from our wish list - everything helps and any amount helps!
Since opening in 2007, we have had 576 adoptions!  576 kitties, off the streets that are safe and in loving homes.  We couldn't do it without you!

Sincerely,

Samantha Person
Shelter Director

Volunteer Spotlight
Denise Briggs and Belle Jo: our Sunday Morning Dynamic Duo

This month we want to take the time to spotlight Denise Briggs and Belle Jo.  They both started volunteering about the same time, and while they didn't know each other before, they quickly developed a rapport.  Together they have become a cat room cleaning team, their routine like a well oiled machine.  Not even the cats of the teen room can get them off track...well, maybe I shouldn't go that far. Some of those teens are relentless.

Both Denise and Belle are a huge help to the shelter staff and the cats.  Sundays at the shelter would be very sad without them. Very sad, indeed.

PS  Thank you to Belle's mom, Jennifer for feeding us when we don't have time to get lunch.  Belle was right when she said her mom's mac & cheese was the best ever!

You too can be a volunteer!  Please see our website for more details!

About The Cattery
The Cattery offers an alternative to traditional animal shelters in providing a no-kill, cage-free haven for homeless, abused, or abandoned cats.  From there, we seek permanent, loving homes for these animals.  In addition, our organization promotes public awareness regarding the value of animals and their welfare, the dangers of pet overpopulation, and the benefit of quality human-animal companionship.
