The Cattery
The Cattery Newsletter - The Scratching PostApril 2010
Dear Friends,

Welcome to our new email newsletter!  We hope you enjoy the new format for receiving updates and news about our shelter.

It's been a great year so far!  We've received grants from two foundations - The Ed Rachal Foundation and The Coastal Bend Community Foundation.  Our monthly Fine Wine and Felines events have been well attended and our Meow Mixer was a huge success!  We've also gained many new supporters and volunteers and have adopted almost 6 cats per week into loving homes!  We hope the rest of this year will be successful and that we can increase the number of cats and people that we can help in our community.

As always, thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Samantha Person

Volunteer Spotlight
Bill Thornton and Helga Kohlstedt

In December a group of volunteers helped construct our Quarantine and Isolation buildings. Since then it has taken us several months to finish out the inside of the buildings so they would be useable for housing sick kitties and kitties waiting to come in to the shelter.

While there is still a bit of cosmetic work to be done, our last major hurdle was being able to afford to run electricity to the buildings!  Luckily for us and the cats, Bill Thornton came to the rescue!  He not only donated all of this time, he was able to get most of the materials donated!  The Cattery's out-of-pocket expense was only $67 when it easily could have cost us thousands!

We applaud Bill for taking the lead in this project and getting the job done so timely and efficiently!

Helga started volunteering at The Cattery in early 2008 and has been one of our biggest assets ever since!  She has volunteered weekly at each of our 3 shelters and even while we were in transition and only doing adoptions at Petsmart!  In addition to being our most thorough adult cat room cleaner, she has formed bonds with some of our adult cats that haven't bonded with any other volunteer or employee.  In addition, she repairs bedding that has been wrangled by the washing machine, repairs cat toys, helps with fundraising events and pretty much anything else we ask of her.  Helga currently volunteers at the shelter 3 days a week and is an engrained member of The Cattery family.  You know you have an excellent volunteer when the thought of them going on vacation causes immediate panic!

Volunteers like Bill and Helga are invaluable!

You too can be a volunteer!  Please see our website for more details!

Virtu-Adoption Campaign

Campaign Drive starting in May

While we find wonderful homes for most of our kitties, some of them due to temperament, health or age, are unlikely to be adopted. For these kitties we provide a permanent place for them to live out their lives in safety and comfort.

These cats offer you an opportunity to help The Cattery continue our shelter and the good work that we do for our community. Perhaps you already have so many cats that you can't adopt one more and add her to the mix. Or perhaps you love cats but your landlord doesn't. Or perhaps your spouse loves cats but you're allergic. How can you participate in creating a nurturing environment for every cat and kitten we take in?

You can Virtually Adopt a cat or kitten from our group we've designated as "maybe here forever." When you virtually adopt a cat on our list, you get an email letter from them each month as well as a cute picture! And here's the really good news: only 300 virtual adoptions @ $15 a month would completely cover the overhead* to operate The Cattery. Only 300! And covering our overhead each month would free up our fundraisers for important expenses like vet bills and special projects.

Virtual Adoption is easy. You can sign up here via PayPal or you can email us at thecatterycc@aol.com to get info on mailing a check each month or have us automatically charge your credit card. Although $4500 per month is a lot of money, spread out over 300 people (or more!), it's less than $200 per year per virtual adopter (50 cents a day).

The official campaign will run for 6 weeks and starts in May.  But you can sign up at any time!

*The Cattery's overhead expenses include employee wages (currently 4 part time kennel attendants/adoption counselors - the director position is unpaid), electricity, trash pick up, water, food, and cat litter.
Reduced Adoption Fees
For cats that have been at the shelter 6 months or longer*

Through May, any cat that has been at our shelter for 6 months or longer will have a reduced adoption fee of $35. Most of these cats have been overlooked because they are a bit shy. We are hoping the reduced fee will put them in the spotlight and have people notice them a bit more.

A complete list will be available at our shelter and on our website soon.

*Approved applicants only.

About The Cattery
The Cattery offers an alternative to traditional animal shelters in providing a no-kill, cage-free haven for homeless, abused, or abandoned cats.  From there, we seek permanent, loving homes for these animals.  In addition, our organization promotes public awareness regarding the value of animals and their welfare, the dangers of pet overpopulation, and the benefit of quality human-animal companionship.

Meow Mixer Success
This is the picture of what our new quarantine and isolation cages will look like! With the money we raised at the Meow Mixer, we will be able to buy two sets! These new cages will help us ensure that diseases are not passed between cats while they are going through the 2 week quarantine period and so kitties in isolation can recover from any sicknesses they have without catching others!
Thank you for supporting The Cattery so we can continue to do good work and improve on our practices!

Changing the luck of black cats!

It is no secret that black cats have the cards stacked against them.  Many people believe in superstitions and other people don't think black cats are as expressive as cats with more color.  A 2002 study found that black cats were only 1/2 as likely to get adopted as tabby cats and two thirds less like to get adopted as white cats (read full article here).
We would like to feature our large population of black cats during the month of June that often get overlooked for more colorful cats.  We currently have 15 black cats in the shelter, with more kittens and moms in quarantine and foster care that will be available for adoption soon.  We would like to offer an adoption package as an incentive.  We would like to include a litter box, litter, bed, toys, and a litter scoop with each donation.  If you would like to help us with this project, please use the link above to donate through PayPal or bring any of the items by the shelter during shelter hours.
Vet Tech needed!

In order to maintain that our cats are as healthy as possible, we are looking to hire a part time Veterinary Technician.

This person needs to be experienced in drawing blood for tests, giving vaccines, giving fluids, and determining dosages for medications.
