Greetings!
Talmud Torah Builds Teens' Developmental Assets in a Jewish Way
Did you know that...
- TT presented a program on Distracted Driving for 9th-10th grade students and their parents two weeks ago? We will be presenting a similar program for 11-12th graders and parents on January 18th.
- Did you know that our Hey students routinely volunteer as a class at the Sholom Home?
- Several teens have completed "Madrichim" (teacher's assistant) training and are now serving as tutors in the elementary school?
- Every Sunday morning, students in our Bet Midrash (high school) serve as companions and aides in the "Darkeynu" program a Shaarim program for students with special needs?
- Teens are learning Jewish Civics in their "Panim" class and are planning a trip to Washington DC to learn more about advocating for the Jewish community?
Selecting classes for our school is not a random activity. The process is a combination of listening to our students about what they want to learn and basing the program on a sound educational foundation. This list of "40 Developmental Assets" developed by the Search Institute is used as a resource for planning classes, curriculum and as a guide in evaluating for outcomes. In fact, there are very Jewish values in these assets. For more information you can connect to the website and subscribe to their newsletters for valuable parenting advice as well. http://www.search-institute.org/content/40-developmental-assets-adolescents-ages-12-18

Adopt A Survivor -Latkes and Love
As part of the Adopt A Survivor Class the students try to meet their survivor-partners once a month. The students suggested for the December meeting, that all the students and their survivor - partners get together in one place to make latkes. What a wonderful idea!
"I liked meeting the other survivors and I enjoyed having my family meet my survivor-partner."
"It was fun being in a happy setting celebrating the holiday with everyone."
It was so much fun and the survivors were natural latke makers." These are some of the thoughts of the students after a memorable morning of latke making and shmoozing
The "latkes and love" session was excellent. There was a natural feeling of comfort, friendship and enjoyment. In the spirit of Chanukkah, the students and their survivor-partners brought much light into each others' lives.

Hanukkah Fun in Bet (4th Grade)Classes

Students learned about the customs of Hanukkah, chanted the b'rachot, made beautiful art pieces-laminated placemats, hall and poster decorations. They read a short summary of the Hanukkah story and gained greater understanding of its significance.
In Tamar's class, particularly exciting was construction of a Human Hanukkiyah. The children had ten minutes to figure out how to build a Hanukkiyah. After much discussion, they made their Human Hanukkiyah and even lit it!
Fun was had by all! |
Etgar Tefillah Program
with Dalet (6th Grade) Classes

On November 14th and 15th the Dalet classes came together to partake in the, Meal of Many Blessings program, to kick off the Etgar Tefillah program. Students enjoyed eating different foods from six categories and recited the Brachot Nehenim (pleasurable blessings).
They studied the meanings of these blessings on a deeper level and, hopefully, will incorporate the blessings into their daily lives. |
Jordan Geller, the Baker, Shares His Talent

Yaakov (Jordan) enthusiastically told Tamar his Bet teacher, "I would love to make a Hanukkah cake for our class." On Sunday, he brought his masterpiece to class to share with his classmates, the administration and faculty. The students discussed how generous and thoughtful it is to give of oneself. Also, the life lesson of saying you will do something and then following through was emphasized. The taste of Yaakov's delicious cake will remain for a long time. Toda raba, Yaakov! |
