Welcome To Sportsman's Elite

With winter in full swing and spring just around the corner Sportsman's Elite is here for all your hunting, fly fishing and gun needs.  With our buying season coming to an end, we are excited to have a new line of apparel, hunting gear, firearms, class III weapons and bows coming into the shop this month with incredible pricing.  Last month we sponsored the Clash of the Titans featuring title fights from our local law enforcement agencies and this month we are excited to be sponsoring the Safari Club International which will be on February 19th.  Come on by and meet Jorge Garcia, the newest member to the Sportsman's Elite team.  Jorge is a tournament archery shooter and will be directing our archery department and traveling with Shane and Tim to the Mathew's manufacturing plant in Wisconsin to build bows and learn about the Mathew's bow system.  Our Archery department is set to be in full swing by March so come on by and check out our great new products.

Thanks for your support and we appreciate the business!

 2011 Spring Turkey Season

Spring is just around the corner and for the most part means warm weather is on its way which for sporting enthusiasts means "Turkey Season". If  you are like me you don't want to damage any more meat than necessary, which means a head shot. To attain a successful head shot you will probably be using a full or "turkey" choke to keep a tighter pattern and you will require a different load. Both of these adjustments will give you a tighter pattern which will mean less scatter and less damage to your game bird.

If your hunting needs lean more towards archery than we are the store for you. We have recently become a Matthews dealer and will be carrying a full line of archery equipment, accessories as well as having a Matthews trained bow tech on hand.  For a large slow moving bird they sure can be hard to find, and hit for that matter we will carry broad head tips for your arrows! So make sure your ready this season. Have Your gun clean and set up for your needs, have your bow tuned and ready, and have ammunition ready for both. We will be working hard to have these items available to you, but this time of year they go fast. We also carry "Primos" game calls for your hunting needs as well. Ask your sales associate for anything you don't see on the shelf, if we don't have it, we will work hard to get it.

Good luck and enjoy the season,
Shane Koch (Store Manager)

Fly Fishing Tip of the Month

Tip for Feb.

This winter I have been tying at some of the shows in the Southwest and I always get big response when I tie flies with blue and/or purple. People always ask why purple, why blue? In last month's new letter we had a purple midge for the fly of the month and this month we are putting an electric blue midge, flies that I have tied in these shows. These two flies have been getting a lot of attention and questions.

So why purple, blue? This has to do with the spectrum of light and how it penetrates the water. The white light we see is made up several colors and water tends to act as a light filter. Depending on the wave length of the color, the deeper it will travel through the water column. Scientists have discovered that ultra violet (UV) and blue light penetrate the deepest. So in turn, these are the last colors the trout before black darkness in the deep water. What does these mean to us as fisherman? The colors on the flies we see are actually the colors of light being reflected. When we cast the fly in to the water it will reflect that color until the water is deep enough to filter it out. If we use blue and UV colors, the fish see it much longer then say red (which is at the other end of the light spectrum) as the fly sinks.  If the trout can see the glow or flash of the UV fly longer, it gives them a better target as the water current pushes it to them. In lakes, this concept is especially true because of the deeper depths the trout hold in. You need a fly they can see, if they can't see it they won't eat it.

The other factor to consider also is the fact UV and blue are not used as offer as other colors. Check in the fly catalog companies put out, you can usually count the UV, purple or blue ones on one hand. Sometimes just changing a color on a popular fly to purple or blue can trigger takes. It is something they have not seen before. Trout do not have legs or arms to grab it and inspect it, they inspect it by grapping it with their mouths.

(It is good to note here that when I mention purple, I really mean violet. Purple was the name invented by Crayola that is commonly used now but when you look at the chart of the light spectrum, you won't see purple but violet and ultra violet.)

On your next fishing trip, if the fishing slows down, try a purple (violet), UV or blue fly. You will be surprised how it can trigger takes.
