Welcome To Sportsman's Elite
|
Greetings!

The countdown has begun to the beginning of dove season which opens up all across the country in September and the staff at Sportsman's Elite is getting geared up to help you with all your hunting needs. July and August are a great time to get out and start practicing your shot by either shooting skeet or trap. Before you go out to shoot, you should take a good look at your gun to make sure everything is functioning properly from the mechanical aspect and if you didn't clean your gun at the end of last season now is the time to make sure all parts are well lubricated and free from rust or debris. It's important to get comfortable with shooting your shot gun again before you go out to hunt dove because we all get a little rusty. Remember, Sportsman's Elite has all your gun, ammo and accessory needs so come in early while the selection is good and don't forget we sell Texas hunting licenses which will go on sale August 15th for the 2010-2011 hunting season.
Thanks for your support and come by and see us!
Sincerely, Sportsman's Elite

Monofilament vs. Fluorocarbon

I get a lot of questions about which leader or tippet material to use, mono or fluorocarbon?
I, in turn, ask them "What kind of fishing are you going to be doing? " Monofilament and fluorocarbon both have their places in the fly fishing world and each one has an application it is best for.
Mono is good for dry fly fishing because it is the least dense material use in leaders and tippet. This will help the dry fly stay in the surface film unlike fluorocarbon which is denser and will break through the surface film. This will cause the dry fly to be pulled down underneath the surface, even when treated with floatant. This property of fluorocarbon is bad for dry fly fishing but is great for nymph or subsurface fishing because it helps the fly get down to where the fish are.
Mono also has more stretch or elasticity than fluorocarbon which helps with hard strikes or when fishing in cold weather. Fluorocarbon actually will become brittle when the temperatures dip below freezing because it loses any elasticity it has. When winter fishing, mono is a better choice to absorb and hold on to fish.
Fluorocarbon also has properties that help make it a better choice in some fishing conditions. When the water is crystal clear, there is no surface action and you are force to go subsurface, fluorocarbon is the best choice. Fluorocarbon has little to no reflective properties which makes virtually invisible underwater. Mono on the other hand will reflect sunlight even underwater, in very clear water it reflects and the fish will see the shine. This causes the trout to become weary and avoid your flies.
The other property that may make fluorocarbon a better choice over mono is that at the same diameter, fluorocarbon tends to be stronger and more abrasive resistant when the temperatures are warmer (especially in topic temperatures). Take Rio's Fluoro Flex Plus (fluorocarbon) and Power Flex (mono), at a 4x diameter; the fluorocarbon has a 7 lb test rating while the mono has a 6.4 lb test rating. This means the fluorocarbon can withstand more than half a pound more pressure than the mono. It can give you a little more leverage and can make the difference between a fish in the net/boat and a fish of a lifetime breaking away.
I hope this bit of information helps with your decision when faced with the choice of the type of tippet or leader to use for your fish situation. For more information on this subject or for an updated fishing report, call me at:

The .380 Boom

Why has there been such a boom in the .380 market over the past year? Why not? There are 10 times more the amount of citizens who have concealed carry licenses than in the past decade. With the influx of all these new concealed carriers, they are all looking for lighter weight, small framed guns to put in their pocket, purse, jacket and/or pants. Carrying a gun with a higher caliber and a larger framed gun can be a real hassle and having to outside holster is just not that easy unless you are always wearing a jacket or can cover with a long shirt without printing the gun. These sub-compact and micro-compact guns are so easy to carry and most carry 6 rounds in the magazine and 1 in the chamber so you still have a good quantity of ammo in a gun that is pretty easy to shoot. In general most people think the .380 caliber is too small to carry but realistically, there isn't a gun you can hold in your hands that guarantees a 100 percent stop in one hit and once you realize that accuracy matters, a small gun is ok and a big one sometimes is not worth the extra hassle of packing it.
