Welcome To Sportsman's Elite
|
Greetings!

Come on in and cool down at Sportsman's Elite Hunting, Fly Fishing and Gun Pro Shop this summer. While dove season is only 2 months away, we are already itching to get back out there to watch our white winged friends in action. In the month of May our feathered friends hatched their eggs and all around the Valley we have seen an abundant supply of new opportunities for this September.
This past month we had our 1st Annual Rabbits and Rattle Snakes Hunt. While we were able to help the local golf courses and sod farms out with their rabbit reduction plan, there were no snakes harmed during our event. Regardless we had a great time and look forward to the next hunting event this fall. Hot, Hot, Hot! We have some HOT Specials for the month of June at Sportsman's Elite! Come in to check out our great deals on Browning and Beretta Long Sleeve Apparel, Sitka Gear and Smith Optic Sunglasses all at 25% off. We also have a great deal on all our in-stock hunting rifles and shotguns at 15% off.
Thanks for your support and come by and see us!
Sincerely, Sportsman's Elite

Tip for June

On a recent fly fishing outing I was helping guys who had never fly fished before and I realized how important the hook set is. Fishing for as long as I have, the hook set becomes second nature and it was not until I was trying to help someone who never set a hook with a fly, that I realized how hard it really is. There are two different hook sets that we use for fresh water fly fishing, a dry fly fishing hook set and a nymphing hook set.
A dry fly hook set is a delayed hook set. It is visual because we actually see the fish taking the fly. If you are too fast the fly will be pulled out of the fish's mouth before he can close it. You have to wait until the fish closes its mouth and turns away or down before lifting the rod tip straight up. I good friend of mine from England always says "God save the Queen!" before setting the hook. This gives the fish enough time to take the fly and turn away. Just remember to slow down the hook set when dry fly fishing.
When nymphing the hook set is much faster. You are watching an indicator and not the fly. There is a length of leader between the fly and the indicator and it will take the energy time to transmit from the take till it makes the indicator move. The hook set is faster because we set the hook as soon as the indicator drops or wiggles. If you wait too long the fish will get off the line or will spit the fly out. Rick Takahashi at one of his seminars, said "strike indicators don't detect takes, they show that a take has been made." On the San Juan, the take can be real light so with any unnatural movement on the indicator we are setting the hook with a quick lift of the rod tip. It is quick but not a forceful set like the BASS Pros do.
Hooks sets are crucial because that is how you secure the hook into the fish. Remember to slow down when dry fly fishing and speed up when nymph fishing in order to successfully catch a fish.

KNOW YOUR WEAPON
How many rounds does my gun carry? What grain bullet will be the best? What brand bullet does my gun shoot most accurately with? At what distance does my gun remain accurate? These are questions I would have scoffed at a year ago but in the last year have found to be rather important. I recently had the privelage of sighting in a very nice, very expensive rifle for a good friend. After one box of ammo I was shooting three inch groups at one hundred yards. I was confused because this rifle should have been more accurate than that at three hundred yards, but no matter what I tried I couldn't get any closer. After sharing my frustration with a few people, a friend mentioned trying a different type of bullet. I reluctantly agreed to try but under my breath laughed at the idea and knew it wasn't going to change anything.
I can't recall ever being more pleased to be wrong. Upon switching ammunition I was shooting through the same hole at one and two hundred yards. I couldn't believe it. It is my firm belief that every gun has a personality, no two being the same and you need to "know your weapon." You can have two people build the same target rifles using the same parts, both of them requiring different types of ammo to be accurate. The last thing you want is to find that your $5000 rifle doesn't like spiral point ammo while you are on a $10,000 hunt. More importantly you don't want to find out that your hand gun won't chamber certain hollow point ammo when your life may depend on it. So, experiment with your weapon, try different rounds at different distances then try them in different conditions, and at different altitudes. We rely on our weapons for so many things it only seems normal that we should get to know them a little bit and although ammo is scarce and expensive, I believe your life is worth it!
