Welcome To Sportsman's Elite
|
Greetings!
May marks our 1st year in business at
Sportsman's
Elite and thanks to you the customer, we are heading into our second
year well
ahead of the game. Speaking of Game, as we head into Summer, now is a
good time to assess your hunting equipment at your lease or ranch. It's
always important to know the condition of your equipment, (i.e. blinds,
stands,
feeders, trail cams) before getting into summer when it's too hot to go
out and
check. If you take proper assessment now, you can start working on your
list ahead of time because before you know it, October's here and you
don't
want to be sitting in a blind without a stool!
Thanks for your business and we hope to see you
soon!
Sincerely, Sportsman's Elite

Tips for Catch and Release
Many rivers and streams are more and more becoming catch and release only. This poses problems for people who have not done this before. Here are some tips to help ensure that the fish survive and keep you from facing fines or jail time. The most important thing I cannot stress enough is use barb less hooks. They are the law in most catch and release rivers/streams. You must smash the barb down completely or file it completely off. There are now barb less hooks commercially available at an extra cost. The game wardens will check hooks by running mono along the hook and if it snags, they consider the hook to have a barb. I met a man on the San Juan whom had this done and it cost him a $275 fine plus court costs.
The next tip I can give is playing/fighting the fish as quickly as possible. The fresher the fish the better chance he will have to survive. Never play a fish to complete exhaustion. This will kill the fish. If a fish has been tired, do not just throw them back in. Never do the bass pro release where they flip the fish back into the water. If the fish is tired, wet your hands and cradle the fish. Always try to keep the fish in the water. Point the fish into the current and push the fish back and forth to allow water to pass over the gills. When the fish is ready he will pull, and swim from your hands. Make sure the place where you release the fish has some current, do not release in still water, there is less oxygen and they cannot breathe. Also do not release fish in fast current, they are tired and cannot swim against the fast current. They will be washed down river, getting beat up on the rocks and river bottom.
The last tip I have for you is never under any circumstances handle a fish with gloves or a towel. Always take off your gloves (sun gloves in the summer and warm mitts in the winter) to handle a fish. Always wet your hands first before attempting to handle a fish. Use a rubber net, they are softer on the fish. These are tips to preserve the protective slime a fish has on its body. This slime prevents bacteria, fungus and viruses from attacking the fish (it is part of the fish's immune system). These foreign intruders can kill a fish and we must make every attempt to keep the fish healthy.

Hunting Equipment Check List
When the temperature starts rising it only means
two things at
Sportsman's Elite;
summer is coming and it's time to inventory your hunting equipment and
make sure your guns are clean and ready for September. Not many people
think about the condition of their guns or hunting equipment in May but
it's a great time to check your equipment before its put away for the
next 3 months or so.
There's nothing worse than showing up on an
opening dove day hunt to find that something is not working right or
your gun
has rusted because you didn't clean it after your last use or didn't
properly store your weapon. That's why now is the time to get your
gear together and cleaned so you can put it away and forget it until
September
without any worries.
When it comes to cleaning your hunting rifles or
shotguns make sure to completely tear the gun apart and make sure
everything is
well cleaned and lubed. Flushing all moving parts with solvent will help prevent corrosion from dirt build up, oil and
grease;
and properly cleaning your barrel will keep you shooting straight and
prevent
any potential cartridge jams. Applying a thin film of oil or a dry lube
on your gun will help prevent any unwanted oxidation that can possibly
damage
your gun.
When storing your guns, use a silicon sock or store them in a
dry closet/gun cabinet away from any air vents or water heaters as these
do
increase the humidity that is harmful to your guns. The most important
thing is always store your guns out of reach from children and always
use a gun
lock!
If you don't know how to properly clean your
gun, come
by the shop and we can show you what you need and how to do it. If you
are not interested in cleaning your gun yourself, we also do cleaning
in
house for $20 on pistols and $30 for rifles. Thanks again for your
support and call us if you need anything!
