Welcome To Sportsman's Elite
Greetings!

As the weather starts to warm, that means two things at Sportsman's Elite; it's time to gear up for fly fishing and spring turkey hunting!  With the opening of our fishing department in February we have brought in some great products to get you to the fish and have a wide array of shotguns and accessories to help you bag that spring turkey!  In February we had the pleasure of having Deward Yocum, Master Fly Tier, come for a Super Realistic Tying Demonstration, we appreciated him coming down and had a great turnout.   If you haven't already, come on by to see the changes we have done to the shop.

Sincerely,
Sportsman's Elite

Spring Cleaning

kit
Spring is always associated with "spring cleaning", people cleaning out their houses after a long winter.  This also applies to your fishing equipment. Whether you are a die hard angler that fishes all year round or a seasonal fisherman it is always a good idea to prepare your gear for the upcoming season.

As with all equipment, it is recommended to inspect and clean your gear.   The first thing you need to inspect is the crucial link between you and the fish, your leaders and tippet.  Look at the leaders and tippet and make sure they are clear. If they are cloudy, they have been weakened by heat or UV light and will become brittle. A brittle tippet or leader will not stretch and if used may break off a fish. To avoid this happening to you make sure you dispose of any old gear and restock it with new merchandise in good condition.

Next, look at the fly line and backing to check the fly line for cracks and discoloration as this may indicate the line is old and losing its floating property. Badly crack line needs to be replaced but if your line is dirty there is a solution to bring it back to life. I recommend Rio's "Line Cleaning Kit" which comes with four "Wonder Cloth" patches and a bottle of "Agent X" floatant.  After using the cleaning kit on your dirty line, you will find that your line will shoot through the guides smoother and will float higher and longer. After your line is clean make sure you inspect the backing to ensure it is soft and limp. If your backing is hard and stiff and has lost its flexibility and may break while fighting a fish.

These are just some tips to get you started. If you have any questions on getting your gear ready for this summer, just call 587-4867 or stop by the store and ask for me.

Home Defense

"Which weapon is best for defending my home?"  This is a question people have asked me more often than I can count. Should I buy an assault rifle, a hand guns, or a shotgun?

I'll start by saying that all of these items carry a strong argument for success.  Short barreled rifles, carbines, or bullpups would be considered strong candidates because of high ammo capacity, and room for accessories (lights, lasers, etc.).  Those of us with little to no combat training may find it difficult to move about the house with a long gun out in front of you. Inexperienced use of a light or laser could be compromising.   Another thing to consider is that most of these weapons fire a round capable of traveling through walls, furniture, and possibly into the neighbor's house!

Handguns provide a better ability to move freely around the house with less obstruction in front of you. There are lights and laser attachments available for some handguns as well. I would again strongly recommend choosing your ammunition carefully. I recommend he cheapest lead or the higher end hollow point bullets because full metal jacket bullets will possibly over penetrate and harm someone in the next room or home. One thing to consider when buying a handgun is that you may lose accuracy under stressful conditions and poor lighting.

If you want to simplify your options, a short barreled shotgun is probably your best choice for home defense because of its weight, ease of operation, and effective range. A light load will be plenty effective and will not over penetrate plus the sound of a round being chambered will probably be enough to deter an intruder.

If you have any other questions please come by and see me or any one of my staff. We would be happy to help.
