July is proving to be a really hot and dry month. We would like to share some tips for your lawn and gardens this month:
~Cut your grass at 3". Trim the high spots only if your grass has gone brown or dormant. Cutting at 3 inches allows the roots to grow 3 inches, allowing the roots to gain some deep moisture. There is a direct link between grass height and root depth. As a rule, the higher the grass is cut, the deeper the roots go.
~This is the time to aerate. Opening up pockets in the ground to allow for moisture and air will allow for better root growth.
~Fertilize with a slow release fertilizer. The slow release will help roots to get valuable nutrients throughout the dry season.
~On your watering day, water both in the early morning and late night. Try not to water in the scorching heat and sun. Because the ground is hard, water slowly to avoid water run-off.
~Water with a watering can your vegetable garden early morning. Cultivate before watering will help your plants get what they need.
~If you have not already mulched your gardens, mulch with composted mulch. We suggest a natural pine. Remember to cultivate and water your gardens prior to mulching, then water after mulching. Mulching will allow moisture to remain in your gardens longer.
We would also like to Congratulate Blake Kroetsch, our once Co-op student who was given an Award on June 15th by the Waterloo Region District School Board & the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program.
