February 2012

Closed Presidents' Day
Don't forget Irving Recreation Center will be closed on Monday, Feb. 20 in observance of Presidents' Day.  Please make your after school plans accordingly.
Valentine's Dance
Irving Recreation Center is hosting a Valentine's Dance on Friday, Feb. 10 from 7-9 p.m.  This fun and well supervised social event is open exclusively to Irving Middle School students.  Tickets can be purchased for $4 after school at the rec. center starting Feb. 2 and will be available until the event is sold out.  Tickets are required for admittance and will not be sold at the door.
After School Fitness Club
Lincoln Parks and Recreation is FUNdamental to youthIRC Fitness Club development and active living, and health and wellness are important components of our programs.  Sadly, many parents reported in our fall surveys that their children were not experiencing these opportunities after school at the rec. center.

According to recent reports, child obesity rates in the United States are three times higher than they were three decades ago.  At this rate, 1 out of every 3 children born since 2000 will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives and many others face other obesity-related health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma.

Considering this we want to encourage youth who attend our programs to make positive changes.

Beginning this month, students will be invited to work towards membership in our after school Fitness Club.  Students who participate in healthy and active after school activities at the rec. center can earn t-shirts, water bottles, backpacks, parties, and more.  Specially trained AmeriCorps Members will conduct fitness assessments monthly to track improvement in cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and muscular strength.

Current after school rec. center activities that count toward membership include, but are not limited to:
  • Biking
  • Fitness room circuits
  • Healthy snack preparation
  • Open gym
  • Rock climbing (Urban Prairie)
  • Sixth grade sports camps
  • SPARK
  • Swimming
  • Tae Bo
  • Wii Fit
  • Wise KidsŪ
  • Yoga
  • and more!
Encourage your child to fill out a Fitness Card and start earning their membership today!
