After School Newsletter

September 2011

Welcome!
During after school hours at Irving Recreation Center, middle school students have an opportunity to participate in a variety of age-appropriate, fun, and enriching activities.  Students can stay as busy as they'd like with homework, clubs, and special events, or they can simply choose to socialize with friends in a safe environment.  We encourage all students to be engaged and take advantage of the fun and enriching activity choices at the rec. center.

What Parents Say about Irving Rec. Center
We work hard to provide an experience that families value. Of the parents and other caregivers who completed our parent survey last year, 100% rated their family's experience at Irving Recreation Center "good" or "excellent!"  (Source: 2010-2011 Lincoln Parks and Recreation Parent Outcome Assessment).

The Basics
  • Students must have a pass from a teacher to enter the rec. center after 3:15 p.m.
  • A student cannot enter the rec. center on another student's punch card.
  • Loitering and/or waiting for rides outside the rec. center is not allowed.
  • Once a student chooses to leave, they cannot return until the next day.  It is important for parents to discuss their expectations with their children.
  • Students are allowed to enter the rec. center at no cost after 4:30 p.m. on days Irving Middle School hosts intramural sports practices.
  • Students may remain at the rec. center after 5:00 p.m. We open to the public at that time.  Closing times vary by season (currently 7 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 6 p.m. on Fridays).
Homework Room
Does your child take advantage of our Homework Room?  The Irving Rec. Center Homework Room is a great place for students to do homework or read after school.  We also offer an incentive program that rewards students for doing homework at the rec. center.  Click here to view a slideshow with more details!
RECognized Student of the Month
Irving Recreation Center staff and Student Advisory Board will begin electing a RECognized Student of the Month each month starting in October.  RECognized Students of the Month must be safe, respectful, responsible, and involved in at least one after school club activity at the rec. center.  RECognized students will receive a rec. center t-shirt, recognition in our email newsletter and on our bulletin board in the school cafeteria, and an invitation to a special event at the end of the school year.
