Injuries are a part of sport and competition. Olympic athletes in particular push their bodies to extremes and often have injuries that need to be healed quickly in order to return to competition. More and more acupuncture is being included in the medical services provided to injured athletes.

In the Bejing Olympics held in China, acupuncture was readily available to athletes. It is believed that many U.S. athletes are utilizing acupuncture as part of their medical service to keep them in top shape. In some cases athletes have been very public about the services they used to overcome injuries.

Speed SkatingSpeed skater Brian Hansen, who trains in Milwaukee, suffered a back injury in 2009. He is competing in Vancouver thanks to a lot of hard work and medical services that included acupuncture. Ski cross racers Daron Rahlves and Casey Puckett have been using acupuncture to help them recover from recent injuries that threatened their chances to compete.

As acupuncture is becoming more widely accepted, it is important to remember that acupuncture is a medical technique based in a different system of medicine. Hopefully as acupuncture becomes more utilized, the lessons and medical advice of Traditional Chinese medicine will also be more widely embraced and available to all the athletes in our communities.

AWB
Acupuncturists Without Borders (AWB) and Pathways to Wellness have
launched a relief response to aid the earthquake victims in Haiti. They are now mobilizing teams of volunteer acupuncturists to go to Haiti to provide assistance.

Acupuncture treatments will help heal trauma and provide general body-mind-spirit healing.

In most disaster situations, acupuncturists can be of greatest support beginning several weeks after the disaster, once the people most affected have water, shelter, food, and immediate medical care. When these emergency needs are taken care of, the next critical need is for the people who have been traumatized to be able to function once again.

Donations: You may make donations online by visiting the AWB donation page. AWB is hoping to raise $20,000 to implement the relief effort. There will be regular updates on the AWB Web site of how much money has been raised.
