WELCOME ASSEMBLY & ROSE CEREMONY
|
The first day of school is Wednesday, September 5th. The school day will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. The cherished Welcome Assembly and Rose Ceremony begins the day for the grades 1-8 students and parents. The kindergarten children will begin their first day with their teachers in their classrooms. We ask all parents who wish to attend to gather on the front lawn (bring blankets and chairs) when they hear the traditional "bell-ringing" at 8:30. All the students will meet their teachers at their classrooms. By 8:45 the classes will be sitting in their designated areas. After the greeting and introductions, the faculty will share a musical offering and a poetic journey of the eight years. Then comes the Rose Ceremony when the new eighth graders will present roses to the budding first graders as they begin their journey through the grades. One by one each eighth grader presents a rose to two new first graders and then stands supportively behind these two new friends. Likewise, the eighth grade teacher offers a rose to our two first grade teachers! To conclude, we ask all parents to form two symbolic lines of "trust" which the students and faculty pass through on their way to the classrooms. This ceremony is celebrated in many Waldorf schools as a marker of an important rite of passage for the first grade students. It marks a key developmental milestone as the individuality and capability of each child emerges and grows. Roses are symbolic of this passage since they are a universal sign of love, beauty, and blossoming.

MORNING DROP-OFF & AFTERNOON PICKUP
|
Our student drop off area is near our playground instead of at the front of the school so that the students can walk right in to the playground. Please follow the signs during the first week of school to learn this pattern when dropping off.
In the afternoon, please enter the parking lot and queue up to pick up your child at the school gate on Foxborough Street. Thank you all for working together with us during these busy times!
|
SPECIAL PARKING NOTICE FOR 1ST DAY
|
On the first day of school traffic and parking will be impacted because of the morning Rose Ceremony and afterschool picnic. Plan to arrive early for both arrival and dismissal and please be patient and understanding.
With our usual parking at such a premium, we request that all other parents who are staying for the assembly and/or picnic to come early to park in our school parking lot or on an adjacent street.
Because the 1st and 8th grade parents will be making a special effort to attend the assembly on the first day of school, Mr. K, our games teacher, will be guiding them to park in the basketball courts that morning. Thank you for your understanding!

1ST DAY PARENT CABINET MEET & GREET
|
The Parent Cottage is the first building on the right as you enter from the parking lot (right across the sidewalk from the chalkboard). Parents will have a table set out with coffee and goodies for a casual place to meet and visit on the first day before school starts. Also, Parent Cabinet Ambassadors will be wearing a ribbon name tag throughout the day to answer any questions you might have about the day's events or Journey School, in general. Look for them in the crowd and please don't be shy about introducing yourself.

Dear New and Returning Parents,
Journey School is a community. We have core values and commitments that bind us together. We want students schooled in a wholesome environment that focuses primarily on inner-development versus outer appearance! In turn, we ask all parent-partners to support the dress code.
Please note these new clarifications:
Decisions regarding the appropriateness of clothing and accessories are at the discretion of the Journey School Faculty and Administration.
In case your child arrives at the school dressed inappropriately, we will give you a courtesy call so that you may bring replacement clothes or the staff may loan the student appropriate attire to wear for the day. If the staff loans appropriate attire, the parents will be informed of the dress code infringement via an email or phone call.
If three violations of the dress code occur, the Faculty and or the Administrative Team will take further action including, but not limited to, meeting with the parent(s) to discuss and review Dress Code Policy.
|
There has also been a clarification on nail polish. The guideline on makeup now states: Please make sure your grades 5-8 students wear only plain coloured nail polish without any images.
We depend on you to help us to create a school environment that focuses the students on learning. Thank you for being such an integral part of Journey School's success!

Since main lesson begins promptly at 8:30 a.m., beginning right away with instructional group activities, we suggest that you just make your arrival time 8:15 a.m.!
This solves any late arrival issues AND gives your children the needed time to be physically active after being in the car and to greet their friends before the bell rings. We thank you beforehand for fully embracing this responsibility!
|
WHAT DO I DO IF WE ARRIVE AFTER 8:30?
|
We don't want any student to miss out on the important morning activities, nor can we allow this instructional time to be interrupted.
Here are the steps if your grades 1-8 student arrives after 8:30:
- The parent (or other adult bringing the child) is required to walk the student to the Before School Coordinator or the office to sign-in, indicating the reason the student is tardy.
- The student will receive a pass that will permit them into the classroom and will wait with the Coordinator until a messenger from the class invites them in. The student's parent or guardian is to sign the appropriate list at the office.
The parent of a kindergarten student is required to bring the child to his or her classroom.

TOGO'S BACK-TO-SCHOOL PICNIC
|
Please join the Parent Cabinet for a Back to School Picnic fundraiser on the first day of school, Wednesday, September 5th at 12:30pm.
Just pick up your lunch at Togo's (Alicia Pkwy & Pacific Park), bring it back and grab a Jamba Juice on campus for an all-school picnic on the grass.
Be sure to bring your flyer to Togo's as 20% of sales from Togo's and Jamba Juice are donated back to Journey.
Flyers will be available Wednesday on campus or you can print your flyer here. Also, don't forget to call in your order --(949) 448-0418--so it's ready when you get there.

September 13th Back to School Night (6:00 p.m. - parents only)
CALENDAR: More key dates for the 2012-2013 school year are posted on the calendar page of the website. Our communications team works hard to keep these dates current and accurate. Please email journeyschoolnews@gmail.com
if you find a mistake and we'll correct it as soon as possible. Please bear in mind that specific dates for festivals or special events may change depending on unpredictable circumstances. The calendar is meant for parent-eyes only. Many of our activities, festivals, and traditions are meant to be introduced to the children by their teachers.
