We're hard at work preparing the classrooms and campus for September. The campus is looking really good for this point in the summer.
- Trees are being trimmed, weeds cut, and landscaping is being done throughout campus
- Individual teachers are caring for their rooms
- Carpets are being replaced
- The office will be painted and reorganized at the August work day
- New wood chips and sand are being delivered
- Ramps and handrails painted
- The fields have been leveled out
- New air filters placed in all the classrooms
- Potholes are being repaired
- Music is moving to the back of campus (in the old Oxford classroom)
- And we're working on making the lunch area weatherproof (with grander plans of capturing rain water now that we've been inspired by Cyreine's 8th grade project).
Mark your calendars for the all school work day weekend: Join with other Journey families on the weekend of August 25th and 26th to finish getting classrooms and campus ready before school starts. |
Journey's talent show, development news and CyberCivics program were in the paper and online in June and July.

Key dates for the 2012-2013 school year are posted on the calendar page of the website. Our communications team works hard to keep these dates current and accurate. Please email journeyschoolnews@gmail.com
if you find a mistake and we'll correct it as soon as possible. Please bear in mind that specific dates for festivals or special events may change depending on unpredictable circumstances. The calendar is meant for parent-eyes only. Many of our activities, festivals, and traditions are meant to be introduced to the children by their teachers. Your cooperation in being discrete at home is appreciated. (We give parents advance notice as a courtesy to help in planning and volunteering). The goal is to maintain the awe and wonder of childhood--especially in Kindergarten and the lower grades!

For the 2012-2013 school year, and all future school years, all students entering, advancing or transferring into 7th grade will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster immunization (called "Tdap") for school in the fall. This requirement applies to all public and private schools. The new requirement was signed into law in 2010
The Tdap requirement affects all incoming 7th grade students in California. If we have not received your immunization documentation, by law your child will not be able to attend class. In order to process your documents before school begins on September 5, we must receive your child's proof of immunization no later than August 3rd. (The Journey School office will be closed from July 16 through July 31st.)
You can fax your records to 949-448-7256, or email to shoon@journeyschool.net. Information on the new Tdap requirement, including information on where to get free or low cost vaccines, forms, and FAQs are available at www.ShotsForSchool.org.

Just because school is out -- doesn't mean our work in the garden is done. Volunteers are working tirelessly all through the summer to prepare our outdoor classrooms for the students in the fall. The volunteer garden crew generally meets around 8am on Tuesday mornings during the summer and we've gathered for special projects, as well.
We could use your help!! Please feel welcome to lend a hand (even if it's only a one time thing). We are a friendly crowd. Please email Journey parent and garden volunteer, Michele Whiteaker ocplayparks@gmail.com, to get on the garden crew email list which generally goes out weekly. Just drop by on Tuesdays -- especially if you are a new family coming into Journey. We'd love to welcome you.

Parent, Debi Fronk, has taken on volunteering to ready the Kindy yard for the students next year. Here's a note from her about the plans and progress:
The kindy yard and garden are an outdoor extension of our children's classroom. The garden area provides a place for the children to actively participate in and influence nature. This summer we have already begun to renew our raised vegetable beds (including critter proofing) and started seedlings of plants for natural dyes and natural fall crafts. Providing the children natural and local dye and craft materials provides an activity that engages the senses more fully, along with providing an awareness of where the materials come from. In the fall we will use those same beds for the children to plant seeds and watch them turn into food.
We are also excited for our parents who have volunteered to help rebuild our grapevine tunnel, which provides a wonderful passage for the end of the year Rainbow Bridge ceremony as well as a year round shaded play area.
And last of all we are clearing and preparing an area for a flower garden. This will not only provide a beautiful and colorful area that engages sight and smell, but will also provide dye materials and act as an attractor for butterflies and hummingbirds.
We are very excited about what is happening in our kindy yard. Any and all are welcome to come enjoy a Tues. morning in the kindy yard this summer, as many hands make light work.

Summer String Program for Journey School Thursday Afternoons in August (August 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30)
3:30-4:30PM Beginning Violin The new player will become familiar with the instrument and learn simple folk songs. The home coach (usually a parent, who may or may not play an instrument) is encouraged to attend with the player. In addition to an appropriately sized instrument, the players need a notebook. Students will memorize their songs. Daily short practices will reinforce the many precise skills needed to play successfully. LIMIT 10 COST $25
4:45-5:45PM Fiddling This group is an inclusive, non-performance group designed for players with or without reading skills. Players should be able to play simple songs. You can expect to learn a new fiddle tune each week. Guitars, Bohdrans, etc. and new songs will be welcome. Advanced technique is not required. Be prepared to move to the music. LIMIT 20 COST $15
