HUFFINGTON POST REFERENCES JOURNEY
|
Huffington Post contributor and author of Raising Happiness, Christine Carter, Ph.D., just referenced Journey School's CyberCivicsâ„¢ program in a post entitled: "Three Ways to Find Happiness on Facebook." In reference to Diana Graber's post "Fakebook? A Lesson on Identity Construction," Dr. Carter talks about the developmental challenges of being a teenager and the importance of learning how to manage our digital footprint. Journey School students learn about Digital Citizenship in 6th grade in our cutting edge CyberCivicsâ„¢ program. We've just updated the Innovations section of our website to include a deeper exploration of this groundbreaking curriculum taught in our technology-free classrooms:
Many thanks to Journey School parent, Nirzhar of The Pradhan Studios, for volunteering his time and contributing photographs.

- The annual class play is an important learning experience at Journey School. It is also a beautiful element of Waldorf-inspired education. Parents and community members are invited to any of the performances listed below. (Or view our calendar at www.JourneySchool).net).
- We do ask that you take into consideration that some of the plays are not intended for young children due to content, language, and length. If you decide to bring young children to the production, do keep a close eye on them for their well-being and to ensure the integrity of the performance.

*Please note that where more than one performance is listed, parents are invited to the later production. - Preparation for the class play normally begins long before the day it is first introduced to the students. The curriculum of the year, the children's individual needs, and their developmental readiness are observed and brought into consideration early in the process.
- Teachers work hard to weave together various stories, subjects, and themes from the course of the year into the overall play experience. The play is then tailored, whether borrowed or actually written by the class teacher, to meet desired goals. The goals for the play may relate to social lessons, goals in speech, singing, drama, English, History, or the many other possible benefits. Click here to continue reading about the pedagogy of plays.
- Through the creative process, the class learns to work together as the production grows from a short skit in the younger grades to something much more complex by 8th Grade, such as historical reenactments or Shakespearean plays.
- In the younger grades, consideration is given to maintaining a strong community and not calling too much attention to the young child prematurely. This is one reason younger students typically learn their lines together, one stanza at a time, over the course of several weeks.
- Along the way, supportive parent volunteers and older students who have mastered handwork skills often design costumes and actual sets.

Please join us for an informal meeting to be held in the garden after drop-off on June 7th to celebrate our year in the gardens with the help of Master Gardener, Erik Katzmaier.
We are a very eco-minded community, so we don't have many big plastic jugs at our disposal--but they are proving to be a good barrier for squirrels that like to climb trees and eat leaves. Please bring any big plastic bottles to the Green Heart Garden table and the Garden Crew will put them to good use.

Our students have been working really hard for STAR testing and should be proud of their accomplishments. Grades 2-4 have completed their tests and grades 5-8 will be done at end of week. See JourneySchool.net for testing schedule.
