STAR TESTING
STAR Testing is now underway
Please be sure your child is in attendance and receives abundant rest, nutrition, etc. When talking to your child about testing, please emphasize that positive outcomes flow from good effort and they should be proud whenever they put their best foot forward. Download the tentative STAR testing schedule. Thank you.
MAY FAIRE
Journey has many traditions which set us apart, including May Faire. We hope you enjoyed the students' gifts, delicious foods, and the fun atmosphere. You make this special event possible through your volunteerism and generosity. Thank you. We are also grateful that Dr. Gary Pritchard, CUSD Board President, celebrated with us.

As you continue to reflect upon May Faire in the coming weeks, please remember that our 8th graders have now participated in May Faire for multiple years (as many as 8). The ribbons they weaved together represent the special bonds and common memories which they will always carry with them.

Look for more May Faire pictures on the Journey School blog later this week.
8TH GRADERS & ALUMNI
Journey Alumnus Heads to the White House

Much congratulations to Journey alumnus, writer Emma Townley-Smith, who has been named U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts by the National Foundation for the Advancement of Arts--the highest scholastic honor available to graduating high school seniors. Before winning the prestigious award, Emma was flown to Miami, Florida as a finalist where she presented her writings at the Miami Museum of the Arts. Emma is among 20 graduating seniors narrowed from 150 YoungArts finalists who has been invited to a White House ceremony, along with 121 other scholars. In addition to this once in a lifetime honor, Emma will present her work in an exhibition at the Smithsonian American Art Museum; truly a life changing experience for any young artist. Learn more at http://www.youngarts.org/us-presidential-scholars-arts. Read more about Emma on her Alumni Page.
Alumni Survey and Dedicated Web Page
Journey School treasures its alumni and we've created an alumni page on the JourneySchool.net website to highlight our graduated students. We are slowly building it to include alumni stories and exclusive content. If you know any alumni families, please direct them to the survey so we can showcase them and their achievements since leaving Journey. Please email alumni@journeyschool.net with your submissions.
May and June Lunch Forms Now Available

This flexible program allows you to order lunch all at once or as needed. Forms and payment of $4.25 per meal are due to the office at least 2 days before your desired lunch. Please check class field trip schedules before ordering, as refunds are not available. Print out a PDF order form here OR click here for an easy online process.

2ND WINDOW OPEN FOR 2012-13 LOTTERY
Please pass this news on to any friends and family who may be interested in enrolling in Journey School:
Due to high demand and numerous inquiries about Journey School within the past two months, Administration has opened a second window to accept applications for the 2012/2013 school year. A second admissions lottery will take place after the application window closes.

The window for accepting applications began at 8:30am on May 1, 2012 and will close at 3:00pm on May 11, 2012.

The lottery for all applications submitted during this second window will take place on May 16, 2012 at 1:00pm.

Applications will be accepted for the following grades only: Junior Kindergarten, Senior Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 7th Grade and 8th Grade.

Applications being processed through this second lottery will either be placed in available space in a class or placed on the wait list.

Applications are not being accepted for grades 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 since these classes are at capacity and have substantial wait lists.

Please visit the JourneySchool.net admissions page to download a printable 2012/2013 Journey School Application. Applications are also available in the Journey School Office. If you have any questions, please email Julie at info@journeyschool.net.
ECO-LITERACY
Journey Gardens
It's hard to believe we are winding down are school year of gardening, just as fruit is showing up on the trees and our planter boxes are full of greens. Make sure you take a stroll through the garden to see what has sprouted from our ecoliteracy program.

We are battling squirrels and rabbits that like to come and nibble on our leafy green vegetables. Reminders for students and visitors to the gardens:
  • Closed gates are for protecting the garden from animals that might want to share in our bounty.
  • Fruits taste better when they are allowed to ripen. Let's make sure they are ripe before we pick them.
  • We are building wire barriers with tops to protect the plants in the planter boxes. Any donation of cash or supplies is appreciated.
  • We are a very eco-minded community, so we don't have big plastic jugs at our disposal--but they are proving to be a good barrier for squirrels that like to climb trees and eat leaves. Please bring any big plastic bottles to the Green Heart Garden table and the Garden Crew will put them to good use.
  •  Volunteer in the garden. Please email Michele Whiteaker at ocplayparks@gmail.com if you'd like to be on the garden volunteer list for next year. A weekly email is sent out before our Thursday work days to give updates and let everyone know what tasks need to happen.

See LACMA Exhibits for FREE!
LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) has a program call NexGen (for Next Generation) which allows children under 18 AND an accompanying adult to enter the museum's regular exhibits for FREE. So, two children, mom and dad (or aunt and uncle, etc.) may join them for a day of paintings, sculpture, and whatever activity the Kid's Musuem is up to for the day. Soup Kitchen Food Shortage
For 40 years, the Southwest Community Center in Santa Ana has served warm meals to the homeless and low income residents of Santa Ana. Right now cans of food (fruits, vegetables, etc.) and dry goods (cereal, pasta, etc.) are in short supply for the food bags distributed to the elderly and families served by the Center. If you would like to help the Center, Diana Corbo will collect & deliver any canned or boxed food donated from Journey School. For more info on the Center, visit SWCommunityCenter.org.
