ATTENDANCE & LEARNING
STAR testing and class play preparation is in full swing so attendance, timeliness, sleep, and good nutrition are especially important in May!
PENTATHLON
For the past month, 5th grade students have studied the history, literature, science, mathematics, architecture, and art of the ancient Greeks. They also prepared epic poems, odes, and silks for the annual Pentathlon. Last Friday, it all culminated at the annual Pentathlon in San Diego. Our students gathered with students from 12 other schools for an historical reenactment of the first Olympic Games. They were wonderful ambassadors!

SECOND WINDOW OPENS FOR LOTTERY
Please pass this news on to any friends and family who may be interested in enrolling in Journey School:
Due to high demand and numerous inquiries about Journey School within the past two months, Administration has decided to open a second window to accept applications for the 2012/2013 school year. A second admissions lottery will then take place.

The window for accepting applications will begin at 8:30am on May 1, 2012 and will close at 3:00pm on May 11, 2012.

The lottery for all applications submitted during this second window will take place on May 16, 2012 at 1:00pm.

Applications will be accepted for the following grades only: Junior Kindergarten, Senior Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 7th Grade and 8th Grade.

Applications being processed through this second lottery will either be placed in available space in a class or placed on the wait list.

Applications are not being accepted for grades 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 since these classes are at capacity and have substantial wait lists.

Please visit the JourneySchool.net admissions page to download a printable 2012/2013 Journey School Application. Applications are also available in the Journey School Office. If you have any questions, please email Julie at [email protected].
NEW MEDIA LITERACY
Click to see this short video by BigThink.com which asserts that media literacy should be taught in schools. Our middle school Cyber Civics addresses this need. For more information on this topic, consult our Digital Literacy page on JourneySchool.net or see Edutopia's Digital Citizenship Resource Roundup.

MAY FAIRE
May Faire on Friday
We are happy to announce that Journey School's May Faire is rescheduled for this Friday, May 4th at 10:15am at our central gathering space on the front lawn. Friday is NOT a minimum day, so the grades will be dismissed at the usual 3:05pm time.

May Faire is one of our happiest and biggest community events of the year that includes maypole dancing, food, music, and entertainment--including the selection of the May Faire King and Queen.

A few guidelines:
  • All children should wear clean, white shirts or light colors (khaki, pastels) to create a light, reverent mood.
  • Bring a bouquet of flowers (with stems) to school on Friday morning.
  • Bring your assigned food item at 10:00am, or leave it at morning drop-off if you are unable to attend.
  • Bring mess kits for your whole family, picnic blankets, shade umbrellas and cameras.
  • Each class has prepared an artistic gift for the school community--we hope all families are well represented.
  • Anticipate heavy traffic and limited parking. It is wise to arrive early with lots of cheer.
8TH GRADERS & ALUMNI
May and June Lunch Forms Now Available
Journey School's Lunch Program is managed by our 8th graders. By offering nutritious and affordable hot lunches from Wahoo's and Thaso's Greek Island Grille, they earn money for their class trip. This flexible program allows you to order lunch all at once or as needed. Forms and payment of $4.25 per meal are due to the office at least 2 days before your desired lunch. Please check class field trip schedules before ordering, as refunds are not available. Print out a PDF order form here OR click here for an easy online process.

Contact Carolyn Hatalski at [email protected] with questions.
Alumni Survey and Dedicated Web Page
Journey School treasures its alumni and we've created an alumni page on the JourneySchool.net website to highlight our graduated students. We are slowly building it to include alumni stories and exclusive content. If you know any alumni families, please direct them to the survey so we can showcase them and their achievements since leaving Journey. We've even dedicated a new email address to handle incoming stories: [email protected]
