Journey's Ecoliteracy Program Receives Recognition Wyland Foundation's contest named 30 environmental stewards throughout Southern California as Earth Month Heroes. Each hero was awarded $250 to donate to the environmental charity of their choice and earned press for their respective program on the CBS2/KCAL9 website. (Meet all 30 deserving Earth Month Heroes here.) Journey parent, Michelle Spieker, earned the honor for her vision and volunteer time. She donated her award money to Journey's innovative ecoliteracy program:
"My mission is to bring environmental education to children. I'm a volunteer parent at Journey School, a public Waldorf charter school where I've helped implement an eco-literacy program. The curriculum provides hands-on, age appropriate environmental education for K to 8th graders with classes such as gardening, composting, rainwater harvesting, permaculture principles/design and eco-leadership. A goal of the program is to help students use natural resources efficiently and to become inspiring future entrepreneurs and leaders to tackle some of the challenges of our time."

Journey Preparing Students for Future Employment OpportunitiesAs noted in this Education Week article, the first Social Media Director in the nation was hired by LA Unified School District. The first order of business for this Director is to lead "staff education about a new social-network-use policy implemented in February." The policy has ethical implications pertaining to keeping "work-related and personal social-network accounts separate." These are just the types of issues tackled by Journey School students in our forward-thinking Cyber Civics digital literacy courses for middle-schoolers. Did you know we also have a cutting edge communications team here at Journey School? Parent volunteers help coordinate the info you receive on the website, blog, newsletter, and room parent emails. They are also increasingly pursuing press opportunities to support our future development efforts.

Don't miss this unique chance to understand your child's personality at a deeper level and how best to guide him/her in partnership with your teacher.
Join Patti Connolly for the final talk in her three-part series: The 4 Temperaments: How do Waldorf teachers work with them?
In this last of the series, Patti will share how Waldorf kindergarten and grades 1-8 teachers use the wisdom of the temperaments in their daily instruction and class management and why. She will share what she learned about helping her own children by finding out how their teachers dealt with them.

May Faire on Wednesday
The garden is blooming and ushers in one of our happiest and biggest community events of the year, May Faire. This festive event takes place this Wednesday, April 25th at our central gathering space on the front lawn. The school is decorated with lush greenery and fresh flowers. There is an abundance of food, music, and entertainment--including the highly intriguing selection of the May Faire King and Queen.
The main event, beginning at 10:15 AM, is the graceful maypole dancing with each grade presenting traditional and culturally historic dances they have learned about through their studies. The day proceeds with fresh food and games in a cheerful atmosphere.
CHANCE OF RAIN: Unless you hear otherwise, May Faire will take place as scheduled. Please check email Tuesday morning for an update.
Consult your room parent update for more details.

We are slowly building it to include alumni stories and exclusive content. If you know any alumni families, please direct them to the survey so we can showcase them and their achievements since leaving Journey. We've even dedicated a new email address to handle incoming stories: alumni@journeyschool.net |

100% Attendance in the Coming Months
The coming weeks and months are a very important time for the students of Journey School. Please be sure your child is not absent unless there is a serious illness or emergency. Teachers have planned meaningful lessons, and there is now the additional preparation for class plays, festivals, and STAR Testing which commences in May. It is crucial that all children are in attendance all day, every day so they learn well and contribute fully to the class community which counts on them. 100% attendance for your child in April and May is the goal.
