Community Outreach
"Everyone can be great, because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace - a soul generated by love"

Good Things Are Happening!
January 17, 2011

Dear Journey School Friends and Family,

MLK image

This past weekend we paused to celebrate the meaning of Dr. Martin Luther King's life and legacy. While there are many lessons to reflect upon, it is important to see the connections between his work and ours in Waldorf education.

One of the key beliefs that drove Dr. King's life's work was the idea that people have the innate capacity of experiencing profound personal transformation. Dr. King believed that as individuals grow in their own enlightenment, their communities and the entire society will feel the ripple effect, and social change on a larger scale will take place.

Similarly, in Waldorf education, we believe in the capacity of our students to transform themselves; and in turn, go out and make positive changes in the world. That's why we take the long-view of education; helping students develop considerable inner capacities over time. These capacities include: wisdom, creativity, imagination, kindness and responsibility.

To embody these traits is to live an extraordinary life; a life whose legacy lives on not only in the hearts and minds of generations to come, but in the existence of a better world for those who inherit it.

Our All School Community Meeting at 6:30 p.m. on February 13th. We look forward to seeing you there!

Onwards and upwards,

Mr. Shaheer

Attendance -Absences and Tardy Policy
Journey School's daily goal is 100% attendance with no tardies. Each day of school is part of a sequential learning process; therefore missing even one day without good cause should be avoided.

Reporting Absences to School - Parents are to notify the school office of a student's absence as soon as possible and no later than 9:30 a.m. 949-448-7232.

Tardy - Students who arrive at school after the start of the student day are considered tardy. Those who arrive after the start of the student day (8:30) are to stop by the office.

Please feel free to bring your child to school fifteen (15) minutes early to greet classmates and play before school begins officially at 8:30 a.m. Please do not bring children to school any earlier than that time since there will be no supervision available.

Save the Date - March 3rd is Auction Night!
Get ready to gussy up and have fun at the Annual Auction! This year's theme will be "Founder's Fiesta" to honor the families who created Journey School. The event will take place at El Adobe Restaurant in San Juan Capistrano. Note that the auction will be held earlier this year on Saturday, March 3rd to help lessen the year-end crunch of activities. Invite your friends and friends of Journey to join in the festivities.

Click here for important details from Parent Cabinet on class donations and how you can help make this year's auction a success. Your Room Parent will provide additional information on your class theme.

Please contact your Room Parent or Parent Cabinet Rep if you're interested in helping find business donations, decorating, or organizing the auction this year. If you know of a local business who may be interested in making a donation, click here for a copy of this year's donation letter.

Lunch Program Launched - Sign-up by Thursday 9:00 AM
We are very pleased to let you know that our lunch program has been successfully launched. We have forged a strong partnership with Wahoo's and Thasos Greek Grille focused on common beliefs about education as well as providing nutritional meals at a good value.

Based on these mutual desires, we've designed an affordable, nutritious lunch program with a marginal profit of $1/meal (versus $2.50/meal in our previous program) benefiting the 8th grade commencement trip. Your support in this program will contribute to the successful funding of this important milestone trip for all future 8th grade classes. By joining together, we are creating a sustainable solution.

Click here for the printable order form, or use our eOrder Form link below. Use of either form needs a check written to Journey School and must be turned in to the school by Thursday at 9:00 a.m. to provide meals for the following week. You are welcome to order weekly or monthly.

eOrder Form: If you have trouble viewing or submitting this form, you can fill it out online by clicking here. If you have any questions regarding your lunch orders please contact Carolyn Hatalski at cgh@witsmith.com.
E-Waste Collection
There is a box in the office to gather e-waste, such as old cell phones, GPS devices, laptops, etc.  More information with specifics coming next week.
Journey Knitting Group
Come learn to knit or just to knit on Thursday mornings in the Parent Cottage from 9 AM to 11 AM. We'll be doing scarves and, for the more ambitious, hats. Other projects are welcome. The group will begin January 19. For the first session, we'll talk about the materials and projects people would like to do, and perhaps get started.

Teacher Appreciation
Parent Cabinet will be hosting two teacher appreciation lunches this year in January and May. Please email Lisa Fry if you would like to volunteer.

We are also hoping to provide Wednesday lunch for the teachers several times throughout the year. A simple Pot of Soup or Salad is greatly appreciated by our hardworking teachers. Simply pick a Wednesday and contact lisamariefry@yahoo.com with the date.

Lost & Found
LOST & FOUND is the area below the outside bulletin board by the office - items both on the pegs and below. Since we end up with so much, uncollected items will be donated monthly so that they don't take over, and the campus remains tidy. If names and/or a grade are noted in an item, our new Lost & Found coordinator, Rev. Beebe, will do her best to leave it at the appropriate classroom.
Share Old Spectacles
Share Old Spectacles is a year-round collection. If you would like to donate to this cause, the bag is now hanging on the rail outside of the office.
Journey Parent Group
A Journey School Tennis Group for parents is forming. If you are interested in playing in the mornings during school please contact Lisa Skibsted at oscarski@yahoo.com.
